  • This study analyzes the effects of life course events and labor market conditions on the duration of career interruption among Korean women. The data were drawn from 'A Survey on the Women's Employment Interruption in Korea' conducted by the Korean Ministry of Gender Equality in 2009(currently the Korean Ministry of Gender Equality and Family). This study categorizes the duration of career interruption into three categories: (1) short term interruption(less than 12months), (2) short-medium term interruptio(12-35 months), (3) intermediate term interruption(36-59 months), (4) long term interruption(longer than 36 months), and then analyzes how demographic factors, labor market condition, and life events shape the timing of re-entry into the labor market among women. According to the findings, the jobs that are conducive to combining market work and mother's role expedite women's return to the labor market. Further, the younger, higher the level of human capital, and higher monthly wages that women earned before leaving the labor market, women are likely to experience short-term interruption(less than 12 months) rather than long-term interruption(longer than 60 months). Women who left from the labor market to care for kids are also likely to return to the labor market. However, women who have preschoolers are likely to experience long-term career interruption. These findings highlight the role of family supportive culture at the workplace in order for women to continue their employment while intensive family formation period. Furthermore, the finding that the discriminatory practices against women, in particular mother workers at the workplace lead women to exit from the market work calls for attention to establish family friendly workplace.

After that, 63 questions were selected for 7 factors. A preliminary survey was conducted on 300 women with career interruption in Korea, and as a result, 63 questions of 6 factors were derived through exploratory factor analysis. The main survey was conducted with 44 questions of 6 factors by partially modifying the questions reflecting the important concepts in each factor. In this survey of 600 people, in order to verify the validity of the constituent concept of this test, the entire sample was divided into two groups, and group 1 (G1, N=309) conducted exploratory factor analysis and group 2 (G2, N=291) conducted confirmatory factor analysis. As a result of exploratory factor analysis for Group 1, 34 questions of 6 factors were finally derived, and a confirmatory factor analysis of Group 2(G2) was conducted to confirm the model fit of the derived factors, and it was confirmed that the model fit criteria were met. In order to verify the convergence validity of the developed career barrier scale, a correlation analysis was conducted with the career barrier test for female college students, and as a result of the analysis, the career barrier scale for women with career interruption and the career barrier test for female college students showed statistically significant correlation. In order to verify the validity of the criterion, the results of a correlation analysis with variables of job preparation behavior, job stress, state anxiety, and life satisfaction were all found to be statistically significant. Finally, the academic, practical, and policy significance and limitations of this study and future research directions were presented.

  • The purpose of this study is to qualitatively examine the nature of the stress experience of nurses in reemployment after career interruption using a phenomenological method. The subjects were nurses who were reemployed after working in medical institutions and experiencing three years or more of career interruption. The collected data showed five categories of themes: "the gaps between reality and earlier expectations," "getting hurt because of the worsening relationship with younger superiors," "struggling to adapt oneself to the changing work environments," "getting exhausted as a supermom," and "struggling to survive as a professional." The findings suggest that career-interrupted nurses who are considering finding a new job should be educated to make decisions on where to work. They should be provided with the right information on the environments of hospitals and with educational programs before reemployment to establish their roles as professional nurses. In addition, it is important to increase the diversity and accessibility of retraining programs that can adapt to the changing healthcare environment. It is necessary to develop career break programs so that nurses can successfully adapt to reemployment, to promote professionalism in the work environment, and to look for ways that can inspire nurses who have experienced career interruption.

  • The current study examines the mediation effect of the work-family spillover between full-time married working women's inefficient working culture and career interruption intention. The mediation effect is tested by classifying the work-family spillover effect into two subfactors: the work-family conflict and the work-family facilitation. For this purpose, we sampled 281 full-time married working women aged between 30 and 50s and conducted a hierarchical regression analysis. The main results are as follows: both work-family conflict and work-family facilitation play the role of partial mediation. This finding implies that it is necessary to carefully examine the effects of subfactors for work-family spillover to married working women's career interruption.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze in-depth the nurses' experience of hospital work and the factors affecting career interruption of nurses. For this purpose, 20 inactive nurses aged 26-55 participated in interviews about their experience as nurses, characteristics of nursing work, and reasons for retirement, and applied the analysis method of Colaizzi among phenomenological research methods. The analysis resulted in 104 significant statements, 17 formulated meanings, 6 clusters of theme, and 2 categories. The two categories are nursing work characteristics and work environment characteristics. In the characteristics of nursing work, there are four clusters of theme of 'time pressure', 'lack of autonomy', 'physical and emotional labor', 'low wage increase', and in the characteristics of nursing work environment, there are two clusters of theme of 'physical environment' and 'human environment'. Therefore, in order to improve the nurse career interruption, efforts should be made to alleviate excessive work intensity, raise the appropriate level of pay and provide a safe working environment.
