  • Adsorption behavior of counterions under a Langmuir monolayer was investigated by sum-frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy. By comparing SFG spectra of arachidic acid (AA) Langmuir monolayer/water interface with and without added salt, it was found that the simple trivalent cation $La^{3+}$ adsorbed on AA monolayer only when the carboxylic headgroups are charged (deprotonated), implying that counterion adsorption is induced by Coulomb interaction. On the other hand, metal hydroxide complex $Fe(OH)_3$ adsorbed even on a charge-neutral AA monolayer, indicating that the adsorption of iron hydroxide is due to chemical interaction such as covalent or hydrogen bonding to the headgroup of the molecules at the monolayer.

  • 8-Oxyquinoline dihydroboronite is prepared by mixing equimolar amounts of 8-hydroxyquinoline and borane-dimethyl sulfide complex in tetrahydrofuran at room temperature and its structure is determined by spectroscopic methods. The reagent is shown to be an extremely mild reducing agent and reduces aldehydes, cyclohexanones, and acid chlorides to some extent. The reagent in the presence of 0.1 equiv of boron trifluoride etherate in tetrahydrofuran at room temperature reduces selectively aldehydes in the presence of ketones, while the reagent in the presence of 1 equiv of boron trifluoride etherate rapidly reduces simple aldehydes and ketones but does not reduce carboxylic acids, esters, and amides.

  • Telomeres are DNA-protein complexes at the ends of chromosomes, which play an essential protective role against DNA degradation and aberrant recombination during cell divisions. Several telomerase inhibitors have been reported as candidates for new antitumor drugs. Among them, 2-thiobenzylpyridines, developed by Geron. Co Ltd. as a telomerase inhibitor, were chosen as lead compounds. Twenty-one pyridine-2- carboxylate derivatives were prepared by the coupling of 6-formyl-2-carboxylic acid with the corresponding phenol, thiophenol, and aniline, substituted with various functional groups. • Codonopsis radix, a root of Codonopsis lanceolata (S. et Z.) Trautv., is a source of the traditional medicine and health foods. However quality control method is not established yet. This research is to establish the standard for the quality control of Codonopsis radix. From the root of this plant, 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-${\beta}$-carboline -3-carboxylic acid (1) was isolated. This alkaloid was adequate as a marker compound for quality control, since it is a unique constituent of Codonopsis radix. In particular, (1) was not found in Adenophorae radix, a common adulterants of Codonopsis radix. (omitted)

  • The reaction of the sodium salts of 4-methoxy and 4, 7-dimethoxy 6-hydroxy benzofuran-5-carboxylic acid with ethyl chloroformate yields the corresponding dicarbethoxy derivatives. The N-substituted amides were obtained by treating the latter compounds with amines. The corresponding hydrazides were synthesized by the reaction of hydrazine hydrate on the dicarbethoxy derivatives which spontaneously cyclized to 5-substituted-2, 3- dihydro-1, 3, 4, -oxadiazol-2-one. Also the reaction with phenyl hydrazine has been studied. The dicarbethoxy derivatives and N-substituted amides were tested against Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria in vitro. Most of the compounds posses moderate or slight activity against Gram positive bacteria.

  • Taurine is one of the most abundant free ${\beta}$-amino acids in the human body that accounts for 0.1% of the human body weight. It has a sulfonic acid group in place of the more common carboxylic acid group. Mollusks and meat are the major dietary source of taurine, and mother's milks also include high levels of this amino acid. The leukocytes, heart, muscle, retina, kidney, bone, and brain contain more taurine than other organs. Furthermore, taurine can be synthesized in the brain and liver from cysteine. There are no side effects of excessive taurine intake in humans; however, in case of taurine deficiency, retinal abnormalities, reduced plasma taurine concentration, and other abnormalities may occur. Taurine enters the cell via a cell membrane receptor. It is excreted in the urine (approximately 95%) and feces (approximately 5%). Taurine has a number of features and functions, including conjugation with bile acid, reduction of blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels, promotion of neuron cell differentiation and growth, antioxidant effects, maintenance of cell membrane stability, retinal development, energy generation, depressant effects, regulation of calcium level, muscle contraction and relaxation, bone formation, anti-inflammatory effects, anti-cancer and anti-atherogenic effects, and osmotic pressure control. However, the properties, functions, and effects of taurine require further studies in future.

  • The gaseous hormone ethylene influences many aspects of plant growth, development, and responses to a variety of stresses. The biosynthesis of ethylene is tightly regulated by various internal and external stimuli, and the primary target of the regulation is the enzyme 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) synthase (ACS), which catalyzes the rate-limiting step of ethylene biosynthesis. We have previously demonstrated that the regulation of ethylene biosynthesis is a common feature of most of the phytohormones in etiolated Arabidopsis seedlings via the modulation of the protein stability of ACS. Here, we show that various phytohormones also regulate ethylene biosynthesis from etiolated rice seedlings in a similar manner to those in Arabidopsis. Cytokinin, brassinosteroids, and gibberellic acid increase ethylene biosynthesis without changing the transcript levels of neither OsACS nor ACC oxidases (OsACO), a family of enzymes catalyzing the final step of the ethylene biosynthetic pathway. Likewise, salicylic acid and abscisic acid do not alter the gene expression of OsACS, but both hormones downregulate the transcript levels of a subset of ACO genes, resulting in a decrease in ethylene biosynthesis. In addition, we show that the treatment of the phytohormones results in distinct etiolated seedling phenotypes, some of which resemble ethylene-responsive phenotypes, while others display ethylene-independent morphologies, indicating a complicated hormone crosstalk in rice. Together, our study brings a new insight into crosstalk between ethylene biosynthesis and other phytohormones, and provides evidence that rice ethylene biosynthesis could be regulated by the post-transcriptional regulation of ACS proteins.

  • Because of the need for new antimicrobial substances with novel mechanisms of action, we report here the use of an Acinetobacter reporter system for high-throughput screening of active antimicrobial agents. The bioreporter Acinetobacter strain DF4/PUTK2 carrying luciferase genes luxCDABE was chosen because of its ecological importance and it is widespread in nature. This bioreporter is genetically engineered to emit light constitutively that can be measured in real time by luminometry. Hence, this reporter system was employed to determine the bacteriostatic actions of spent-culture supernatants derived from twelve bacterial isolates. Out of the results, the strongest bioluminescence inhibitory effect of the supernatants was recorded with Bacillus cereus strain BAC (S5). Subsequently, ethyl acetate extracts of extracellular products of strain BAC (S5) were separated by a thin-layer chromatography (TLC). Based on the bioluminescence inhibitory assay, three fractions were found to have antimicrobial activity. One fraction (C) having the strongest antimicrobial activity was further purified using TLC and characterized by IR, $^1H$ NMR, mass spectrometry, SDS-PAGE, and amino acid composition analysis. The results predicted the presence of 2-pyrrolidone-S-carboxylic acid (PCA) and the octadeconic-acid-like fatty acid. Fraction C also demonstrated a broad inhibitory activity on several Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. In conclusion, the Acinetobacter reporter system shows great potential to be a reliable, sensitive, and real-time indicator of the bacteriostatic actions of the antimicrobial agents.
