Comparative Research on the Carbon Dioxide Liquefaction Using Several Refrigerants (몇 가지 냉매를 사용한 이산화탄소 액화에 대한 비교 연구)

  • In this study, we compared the performance of several refrigeration cycles using different refrigerants and utilizing the cold heat of liquefied natural gas (LNG) for the liquefaction of carbon dioxide. The final conditions for the liquefied CO2 were set to -20℃ and 20 bar. The refrigerants used included R404a, ammonia, propane, and propylene using a vapor recompression refrigeration cycle. For the refrigeration cycle, the CO2 at room temperature and pressure was compressed in a two-stage compression process with an intermediate cooling stage using a refrigeration unit. To compare with the liquefaction process using refrigeration, we compressed the CO2 to 8 bar in a single compression stage and cooled it to around -50℃ using the cold heat of the LNG before liquefying it. Results showed that using ammonia as the refrigerant required the least amount of compressor power for the liquefaction process, and the heat transfer area of the evaporator was the smallest when using propylene as the refrigerant. Using the cold heat of LNG instead of refrigeration using R404a resulted in approximately 69% less energy consumption.

  • In the cement industry, various research initiatives are underway to achieve carbon neutrality. Mineral carbonation is a technology that converts carbon dioxide into minerals for storage, and CO2 reactive hardening cement is a type of cement that incorporates mineral carbonation technology. In this study, we aimed to manufacture CO2 reactive hardening cement for reducing carbon emissions in the cement industry by utilizing waste concrete powder generated in the construction sector.

The Effects of Elevated Carbon Dioxide in Seawater on the Early Life Stages of Black Sea Bream Acanthopagrus schlegelii (해수 중 이산화탄소의 증가가 감성돔( Acanthopagrus schlegelii)의 초기성장에 미치는 영향)

  • Since the industrial revolution, seawater has increased in temperature and acidity due to the increase in anthropogenic carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. To understand the effect of elevated $CO_2$ on the early life stages of fish, we reared fertilized eggs of black sea bream Acanthopagrus schlegelii under three $CO_2$ concentrations (400, 850 and 1550 ppm) for 3 weeks. The standard length and wet weight of black sea bream larvae declined with enhanced $CO_2$ concentration in the rearing water (P<0.05). However, chemical analysis using ICP-OES on internal tissues of black sea bream larvae indicated that the whole-body calcium concentration increased with $CO_2$ concentration in the rearing water. These conflicting results suggest that future experiments should examine the acid-base balance to investigate the formation of bone and otolith during larval growth.

  • The quantity of discharged oil from a compressor is one of the most important issues for proper operation of refrigeration system. If the oil is increased in the system not only pressure drop is increased in other components, such as evaporator and gas cooler but also heat transfer coefficient in the heat exchangers is decreased. In addition, the lack of oil in the compressor may cause a critical of the system failure. In this study, one stage single rotary compressor is used for measuring oil circulation ratio(OCR). Carbon dioxide and PAG oil are used as refrigerant and lubricant. Using a U-tube densimeter, mixture density is measured. Characteristics of oil circulation ratio have been investigated for $CO_2$ rotary compressor in the range of operation frequency 45 Hz to 63 Hz and the suction temperature range of $0^{\circ}C$ to $15^{\circ}C$. The results obtained indicate that the oil circulation ratio is increased as the suction temperature or compressor operating frequency is increased.

  • At the carbon dioxide capture process using the aqueous amine solution, degradation of absorbents is main factor to reducing the process performance. Also, degradation mechanism of absorbent is important for understanding the environmental risk, route of degradation products, health risk etc. In this study, the degradation products of MEA were studied to clarify mechanism in thermal degradation process. The degradation products were analyzed using a $^1H$ NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) and $^{13}C$ NMR. The analysis methods used in this study provide guidelines that could be used to develop a degradation inhibitor of absorbent and a corrosion inhibitor.

  • In this study, $CO_2$ absorption properties at high pressure condition that can apply pre-combustion $CO_2$ capture were investigated for physical sorbent such as PEG, DMSO, and Sulfone. The $CO_2$ Solubility, regeneration, and initial absorption rate with temperature and pressure were measured using batch type stirred cell contactor. The PEG showed the highest $CO_2$ solubility and initial absorption rate. It can be found that all the physical sorbents used in this experiments were almost completely regenerated at various temperature and pressure.

  • Carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) is a green-house gas which causes the global warming problems. Anthropogenic emissionspredominantly from the combustion of coal, oil, and natural gas in electricity generations are expected to increase continuously in the future, resulting in increased $CO_2$ concentration in the atmosphere. In this study, we investigated materials properties and process systems for $CO_2$ separation with an emphasis of the post-combustion process.

Kinetics of $CO_2$ decomposition over CuO-Magnetite and ZnO-Magnetite catalysts (CuO-Magnetite 및 ZnO-Magnetite 촉매상에서 $CO_2$ 분해반응속도론)

  • $Cu_xFe_{3-x}O_4$ catalyst and $Zn_xFe_{3-x}O_4$ catalyst were synthesized by the air oxidation method with various C(II) and Zn(II) weights. Activated catalysts decomposed carbon dioxide to carbon at $350^{\circ}C$, $380^{\circ}C$, $410^{\circ}C$ and $440^{\circ}C$. The value of carbon dioxide decomposition rate for $Cu_{0.003}Fe_{2.997}O_4$ and $Zn_{0.003}Fe_{2.997}O_4$ catslysts than was better catalysts. The decomposed rate of the catalysts is about 85%${\sim}$90%. The reaction rate constant(4.00 $psi^{1-{\alpha}}/min$) and activation energy(2.62 kcal/mole) of $Cu_{0.003}Fe_{2.997}O_4$ catalyst are better than $Zn_{0.003}Fe_{2.997}O_4$

  • A mixture of supercritical carbon dioxide and a co-solvent was employed to strip a high-dose ion-implanted photoresist (HDIPR) from the surface of semiconductor wafers. The stripping efficiency was highly improved by the physical force generated from a ultrasonication tip inside the reactor. In addition, helium gas was injected in the reactor as a barrier gas before the introduction of pure supercritical $CO_2$ ($scCO_2$), which reduced the rinsing time significantly. The effect of co-solvents on the stripping efficiency was investigated. The wafer surfaces were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and by an energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer.

Changes in the CO2 and amount of mycelium growth of the liquid spawn on Flammulina velutipes (팽나무버섯 액체 종균 배양시 이산화탄소 농도와 균사 생장량 변화)

  • In this study, to produce Flammulina velutipes mushroom liquid spawn efficiently and effectively the effects of explosive aeration (supplying air with tiny bubbles) of the liquid culture medium on carbon dioxide concentration and residual sugar content in the medium on carbon dioxide concentration and residual sugar contentin the medium were measured. Carbon dioxide concentrations were measured at the outlet of the incubator. On the third day the explosive aeration greatly increased mycelial growth of the liquid spawn, and carbon dioxide concentration also greatly increased but decreased after 5 days. Free sugar contents in the liquid culture consistantly decreased up to 7 days and thereafter was not detected. The weight of the mycelia were maintained similar levels after 3 days. Total nitrogen content in the liquid medium constantly decreased during the 11days of explosive aeration. The content of free sugars in 7 days of culture was the lowest level, thus the inoculum incubated for 6~7 days was thought to be the most effective. Carbon dioxide concentration measurement at the outlet of the container during the liquid spawn incubation required low cost but was efficient to estimate the degree of mycelial growth to be used as a simple indicator.
