  • The carbon-coated Si/Cu powders were synthesized by mechanical ball-milling and hydrocarbon gas decomposition methods at high temperature. The carbon-coated Si/Cu powder was used as anode for lithium secondary battery and its electrochemical behavior was investigated. In addition, the carbon-coated Si/Cu/graphite composite anode material was prepared using natural graphite powder and their electrochemical characteristics were compared with natural graphite anode. The specific capacity of carbon-coated Si/Cu anode increased to the initial 10 cycles. The carbon-coated Si/Cu/graphite composite anode exhibited the reversible specific capacity of 450mAh/g and the first cycle efficiency of 81.3% at $0.25mA/cm^2$. The cycling performance of the composite anode was similar to that of pure graphite anode except the reversible specific capacity value.

  • Silicon (Si) has been considered as a promising anode material because of its abundant reserves in nature, low lithium ion (Li+) intercalation/de-intercalation potential (below 0.5 V vs. Li/Li+) and high theoretical capacity of 4200 mA h/g. In this paper, we prepared a silicon-based (Si-based) anode material containing a small amount of silicon carbide by using magnesiothermic coreduction of silica and hexachlorobenzene. Because of good conductivity of silicon carbide, the cycle performance of the silicon-based anode materials containing few silicon carbide is greatly improved compared with pure silicon. The raw materials were formulated according to a silicon-carbon molar ratio of 10:0, 10:1, 10:2 and 10:3, and the obtained products were purified and tested for their electrochemical properties. After 1000 cycles, the specific capacities of the materials with silicon-carbon molar ratios of 10:0, 10:1, 10:2 and 10:3 were still up to 412.3 mA h/g, 970.3 mA h/g, 875.0 mA h/g and 788.6 mA h/g, respectively. Although most of the added carbon reacted with silicon to form silicon carbide, because of the good conductivity of silicon carbide, the cycle performance of silicon-based anode materials was significantly better than that of pure silicon.

  • In order to increase the utilization of biomass, an electrochemical performance was considered after manufacturing a carbon anode material (SV-C) for a Setaria viridis-based lithium ion secondary battery through a heat treatment process. When the heat treatment temperature of the Setaria viridis is as low as 750 ℃, the capacitance (1003.3 mAh/g, at 0.1 C) is high due to the negative (-) charge of oxygen present on the surface attracting lithium, along with the low crystallinity and high specific surface area (126 m2/g), but the capacity retention rate is believed to be as low as 61.0% (at 500 cycles and 1 C). In addition, it was confirmed that when the heat treatment temperature increased to 1150 ℃, the carbon layer was condensed to be excellent in arrangement, and the structural defects were reduced, resulting in a significant reduction in the specific surface area (32 m2/g) of the pores. Furthermore, when the surface defects of the anode material are reduced and the crystallinity is increased, the capacity retention rate is as high as 89.7% (at 500 cycles and 1 C), but the degree of defects is small, the active point is reduced, and the specific capacity is considered to be very low at 471.7 mAh/g. In the scope of this study, it was found that in the case of the Setaria viridis-based carbon anode material manufactured according to the heat treatment temperature, the surface oxygen content and crystallinity have higher reliability on the electrochemical properties of the anode material than the specific surface area.

  • Si-C materials were synthesized by the heating the mixture of silicon and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). The electrochemical properties of the Si-C materials as the high capacitive anode materials of lithium secondary batteries were evaluated by the galvanostatic charge-discharge test through 2032 type $Si-C{\mid}Li$ coin cells. Charge-discharge tests were performed at C/10 hour rate(C = 372 mAh/g). Initial discharge and charge capacities of $Si-C{\mid}Li$ cell using a Si-C material derived from PVDF(20wt.%) were found to be 1,830 and 526 mAh/g respectively. The initial discharge-charge characteristics of the developed Si-C electrode were analyzed by the electrochemical galvanostatic test adopting the capacity limited charge cut-off condition(GISOC). The range of reversible specific capacity IIE(intercalation efficiency at initial discharge-charge) and IICs(surface irreversible specific capacity) were 216 mAh/g, 68 % and 31 mAh/g, respectively.

  • Composited molybdenum oxide and amorphous carbon (MoO3/C) as anode material for lithium ion batteries has been successfully synthesized by calcining polyaniline (PANI) doped with ammonium heptamolybdate tetrahydrate (AMo). The as prepared electrode material was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The electrochemical performance of the anode was investigated by galvanostatic charge/discharge, cyclic voltammetry (CV), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The MoO3/C shows higher specific capacity, better cyclic performance and rate performance than pristine MoO3 at room temperature. The electrochemical of MoO3/C properties at various temperatures were also investigated. At elevated temperature, MoO3/C exhibited higher specific capacity but suffered rapidly declines. While at low temperature, the electrochemical performance was mainly limited by the low kinetics of lithium ion diffusion and the high charge transfer resistance.

  • The carbon thin film was developed by the CVD method using the carbon source of toluene with the stream of argon gas at $800{\sim}1100^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour. Developed carbon thin films have the material loading of 0.27 mg($800^{\circ}C$), 0.80 mg($900^{\circ}C$), 2.3 mg($1000^{\circ}C$), and 2.9 mg($1100^{\circ}C$) for the disk of 15 mm diameter on single side. The characteristics of carbon thin film as the anode of thin film battery were evaluated using Li|C coin cell. Li|C($1100^{\circ}C$) coin cell has the first specific discharge and charge capacity of 953 mAh/g and 374 mAh/g, respectively, resulting the first Ah efficiency of 39.3 %. Capacity retention of the 5th cycle was 93.2 % indicating good cycleability. The carbon thin film prepared by CVD shows good specific capacity and cycleability, but low Ah efficiency.

  • In order to design capacity of lithium ion battery, some calculations were carried out based on the characteristics of materials by the given battery shape and dimension. The principle of design was built by the interpretation of the correlation of material, electrochemical and battery factors. Parameters of materials are fundamental physical properties of constituent such as cathode. separator, anode, current collectors and electrolyte. Electrochemical factor includes potential pattern as a function of specific capacity, specific discharge capacity(or initial irreversible specific capacity or Ah efficiency) as a function of specific charge capacity and material balancing. Parameters of battery are dimension, construction hardware and performance. Battery capacity was simulated for a lithium cobalt dioxide as cathode and a hard carbon as anode to achieve 1100 mAh for the charge limit voltage of 4.2V, the weight ratio(+/-) of 2.4 and ICR18650. A fabricated test cell (ICR18650) which have weight ratio(+/-) of 2.4 discharged to 1093 mAh for the charge limit voltage of 4.2V. The sequential discharge capacity show good correspondence with designed capacity.

  • In this study, effects of the physical and chemical properties of low temperature heated carbon on electrochemical behavior as a secondary battery anode material were investigated. A heat treatment at 600 ℃ was performed for coking of petroleum based pitch, and the manufactured coke was heat treated with different heat temperatures at 700~1,500 ℃ to prepare low temperature heated anode materials. The physical and chemical properties of carbon anode materials were studied through nitrogen adsorption and desorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, elemental analysis. Also the anode properties of low temperature heated carbon were considered through electrochemical properties such as capacity, initial Coulomb efficiency (ICE), rate capability, and cycle performance. The crystal structure of low temperature (≤ 1500 ℃) heated carbon was improved by increasing the crystal size and true density, while the specific surface area decreased. Electrochemical properties of the anode material were changed with respect to the physical and chemical properties of low temperature heated carbon. The capacity and cycle performance were most affected by H/C atomic ratio. Also, the ICE was influenced by the specific surface area, whereas the rate performance was most affected by true density.

  • Tin is one of the most promising anode materials for next-generation lithium-ion batteries with a high energy density. However, the commercialization of tin-based anodes is still hindered due to the large volume change (over 260%) upon lithiation/delithiation cycling. To solve the problem, many efforts have been focused on enhancing structural stability of tin particles in electrodes. In this work, we synthesize tin nano-powders with an amorphous carbon layer on the surface and surroundings of the powder by electrical wire explosion in alcohol-based liquid media at room temperature. The morphology and microstructures of the powders are characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The electrochemical properties of the powder for use as an anode material for lithium-ion battery are evaluated by cyclic voltammetry and a galvanometric discharge-charge method. It is shown that the carbon-coated tin nano-powders prepared in hexanol media exhibit a high initial charge specific capacity of 902 mAh/g and a high capacity retention of 89% after 50 cycles.

  • The carbonaceous materials have attracted much attention for utilization of anode materials for lithium-ion batteries. Among them, hollow carbon spheres have great advantages (high specific capacity and good rate capability) to replace currently used graphite anode materials, due to their unique features such as high surface areas, high electrical conductivities, and outstanding chemical and thermal stability. Herein, we have synthesized various sizes of hollow carbon spheres by a facile hardtemplate method and investigated the anode properties for lithium-ion batteries. The obtained hollow carbon spheres have uniform diameters of 350 ~ 600 nm by varying the template condition, and they do not have any cracks after the optimization of the process. Increasing the diameter of hollow carbon spheres decreases their specific capacities, since the larger hollow carbon spheres have more useless spaces inside that could have a disadvantage for lithium storage. The hollow carbon spheres have outstanding rate and cyclic performance, which is originated from the high surface area and high electrical properties of the hollow carbon spheres. Therefore, hollow carbon spheres with smaller diameters are expected to have higher specific capacities, and the noble channel structures through various doping approaches can give the great possibility of high lithium storage properties.
