  • Congenital esophageal stenosis (CES) can be classified into three types based on the etiology of stenosis: tracheobronchial remnants (TBRs), fibromuscular hypertrophy (FMH), and membranous diaphragm (MD). It is important to make a differential diagnosis because the therapeutic plan for CES is determined by its etiology. Most cases of FMH and MD can be managed with balloon dilatation, whereas cases of TBRs require resection and anastomosis. Thus, the preoperative distinction of TBRs is critical. Recently miniprobe endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) with a maximum diameter of 2.5 mm has been useful for distinguishing TBRs from FMH in pediatric patients with CES. EUS shows hyperechoic lesions indicating TBR cartilage. Miniprobe EUS is recommended for choosing the correct therapeutic method for CES. We report a case of CES due to TBRs in which a preoperative diagnosis was made in a child using miniprobe EUS without any difficulties.

  • Here we see that the $p-Ces{\grave{a}}ro$ operators, the generalized $Ces{\grave{a}}ro$ operators of order one, the discrete generalized $Ces{\grave{a}}ro$ operators, and their adjoints are all posinormal operators on ${\ell}^2$, but many of these operators are not dominant, not normaloid, and not spectraloid. The question of dominance for $C_k$, the generalized $Ces{\grave{a}}ro$ operators of order one, remains unsettled when ${\frac{1}{2}}{\leq}k<1$, and that points to some general questions regarding terraced matrices. Sufficient conditions are given for a terraced matrix to be normaloid. Necessary conditions are given for terraced matrices to be dominant, spectraloid, and normaloid. A very brief new proof is given of the well-known result that $C_k$ is hyponormal when $k{\geq}1$.

  • This study was performed to determine the levels of physical and mental functioning and to reveal its association with related factors in the elderly people received long-term care insurance services. The interviews were performed, during the period from February 16, to March 31, 2011, to 350 elderlies admitted long-term care insurance dwelling in Daejeon city and Chungchung provinces. As a results, the levels of IADL and MMSE-K in the elderly received home care insurance services was significantly higher than that of the elderly received facility care insurance services. But the levels of ADL and CES-D was not significant. Concerning correlation of ADL, IADL, CES-D and MMSE-K, the level of ADL was positively correlated with the level of IADL and MMSE-K, whereas negatively correlated with the level of CES-D. IADL was positively correlated with the level of MMSE-K, whereas negatively correlated with the level of CES-D. As a results of multiple regression analysis, the factors of influence with the level of ADL and IADL were selected the variables of amnesia, regular exercise and MMSE-K. The factors of influence the level of CES-D and MMSE-K were selected the variables of subjective health status, amnesia and IADL. AS a above results, the levels of physical and mental functioning in the elderly people received long-term care insurance services implies closely related with the health status and health-related behaviors.

  • - Abstract - Objectives: The purpose of this study was to estimate the prevalence of depression and identify its related factors among an urban elderly. Methods: The data for this study were obtained from 333 men and 514 women, aged 65-79 years who participated in '2007 community health survey' in Donggu, Gwangju metropolitan city. Their depressive symptoms were measured by Korean version of the Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression Scale (CES-D). Results: The mean CES-D score (mean±S.D) for all subjects was 7.68±0.31. The mean CES-D score was significantly greater in the women (9.09±0.43) than in the men (5.51±0.39) (p<0.001). The prevalence rates of possible depression (CES-D score ≥16), probable depression (CES-D score≥21), and definite depression (CES-D score≥25) were 8.1%, 5.4%, and 3.9% in men, respectively. The prevalence rates of possible depression, probable depression, and definite depression were 19.5%, 11.1%, and 7.2% in women, respectively. Existence of spouse (no/yes), education level (no/high school or higher), health security system (medical aid/national health insurance), self-reported health status (poor/good), vascular risk factors (present/absent) proved to be statistically significant related factors of depression. Conclusions: This study suggests that a systematic effort and attention to support for elderly people living alone, low educational level, medical aid, poor self-reported health status and vascular risk factors should be promoted to reduce the incidence of depression.

  • This study is to investigate the degree of consumers' non-ethical perceptions and behaviors, and to explore related variables such as demographic variables, idealism and relativism. The data used in this study were obtained by surveying 237 college students from 10th through 24th of October, 2002 in Kimhae city. We conducted a statistical analysis of the data, using percentiles, frequencies, means, t-test, ANOVA, and Multiple Regression. Consumers' non-ethical perceptions and behaviors were measured by modifying Consumer Ethics Scale(CES, Muncy & Vitell, 1992). The CES scale comprises 4 sub-factors: actively benefiting from illegal activity(CES1), passively benefiting(CES2), actively benefiting from questionable action(CES3), no harm/no foul(CES4). Average scores of consumers' non-ethical perceptions and behaviors marked below a mid-value, which means that most of the students are basically ethical. The related variable of consumers' non-ethical perceptions was idealism. The related variables of consumers' non-ethical behaviors were idealism and the amount of discretionary money. The results show that most of the participants are basically ethical as a consumer. However, the results related with the CES4 sub-factor which includes consumer attitudes toward copyrights of consumer softwares and music CDs tell us that they are relatively non-ethical. This claims an importance of consumer education to college students in regards to intellectual property.

  • This study compared the nutritional characteristics of seasoned laver Pyropia yezoensis with conger eel Conger myriaster seasoning sauce (SL-CES) with those of commercial seasoned laver (C-SL). SL-CES had higher protein and lower ash contents than those of C-SL. However, the moisture and lipid contents did not differ between them (P>0.05). The total amino acid content of SL-CES was 21.79 g/100 g, similar to that of C-SL (21.49 g/100 g). The major amino acids in SL-CES were aspartic acid, glutamic acid, and alanine. The SL-CES contained 125.7 mg calcium, 461.6 mg phosphorus, 2183.7 mg potassium, 9.5 mg iron, and 2.6 mg zinc per 100 g SL-CES. These amounts were all higher than those in C-SL, except for Zn. The major fatty acids in SL-CES were 16:0, 18:1n-9, and 18:2n-6.

  • The ES cell can provide a useful system for studying differentiation and development in vitro and a powerful tool for producing transgenic animalds. To investigate the culture condition of chicken embryonic stem (CES) cells which can retain their multipotentiality or totipotency, three kinds of feeder layer cells, SNL cells, primary mice embryonic fibroblasts (PMEF) cells and primary chicken embryonic fibroblasts (PCEF) cells, were used as the feeder cells in media of DMEM supplemented with leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF), basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) and stem cell factor (SCF) for co-culture with blastoderm cells from stage X embryos of chicken. The alkaline phosphatase (AKP) test, differentiation experiment in vitro and chimeric chicken production were carried out. The results showed that culture on feeder layer of PMEF yielded high quality CES cell colonies. The typical CES cells clone shape revealed as follows: nested aggregation (clone) with clear edge and round surface as well as close arrangement within the clone. Strong alkaline phosphatase (AKP) reactive cells were observed in the fourth passage cells. On the other hand, the fourth passage CES cells could differentiate into various cells in the absence of feeder layer cells and LIF in vitro. The third and fourth passage cells were injected into the subgerminal cavity of recipient embryos at stage X. Of 269 Hailan embryos injected with CES cells of Shouguang Chickens, 8.2% (22/269) survived to hatching, 5 feather chimeras had been produced. This suggests that an effective culture system established in this study can promote the growth of CES cells and maintain them in the state of undifferentiated and development, which lays a solid foundation for the application of CES cells and may provide an alternative tool for genetic modification of chickens.
