This paper presents the development of CAD system for the design of lens of the Turn Signal Lamp that can model and simulate its optical performance. The system consists of three main modules: skin surface modeling module, inner lens modeling module and optical performance simulation module. Skin surface geometry can be modeled by the input of data file and inner lens can be modeled by the input of only four parameter using its geometric characteristics. Also light distribution pattern, the barometer of optical performance is generated by means of finite ray tracing method. The system display modeled geometry, ray tracing and generated light distribution pattern.
We have developed the exclusive CAD/CAM system for the machining of impeller blades. This study is about the mod-eling method for the effective machining of impeller blades farmed by ruled surface. As the impeller is consisted of boss part and blade part, the boss is modeled by rotational surface of hub curve on z-axis and the blade is described by ruled- surfaces between hub curve and shroud curve. This modeling process can be carried out on the software developed in this study. And, the developed software can describe the impeller as a solid model through interface with Solid-Works soul- ware. The developed software containing the interface method proposed in this study was very effective fur impeller modeling.
Sculptured surface machining plays a vital role in the process of bring new products to the market place. A great variety of products rely on this technology for the production of the dies and moulds used in manufacturing. And, the use of CNC machines and CAD/CAM system has become a vital parts of product development process. The propose of this study is to investigate the effect of cutting parameters on the machinability such as surface roughness and cusp generated in the machining of sculptured surface on a three-axis CNC machining center using the CAD/CAM system. Experimental result showed that: In step down cutting, as the inclined angle of surface became smaller, the cusp height appeared higher. On the other hand, in step over cutting, as the inclined angle of surface became larger, the cusp height appeared higher. In the point of precision machining, step over cutting was more effective. For the minimization of cusp height, step down cutting was effective in larger inclined surface, but step over cutting in smaller inclined surface.
PURPOSE. This study evaluated the color stabilities of two computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) blocks and a nanofill composite resin and the microtensile bond strength (µTBS) between the materials. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Twelve specimens of 4 mm height were prepared for both Lava Ultimate (L) and Vita Enamic (E) CAD/CAM blocks. Half of the specimens were thermocycled (10,000 cycle, 5° to 55℃) for each material. Both thermocycled and non-thermocycled specimens were surface treated with one of the three different methods (Er,Cr:YSGG laser, bur, or control). For each surface treatment group, one of the thermocycled and one of non-thermocycled specimens were restored using silane (Ceramic Primer II), universal adhesive (Single Bond Universal), and nanofill composite resin of 4-mm height (Filtek Ultimate). The other specimens were restored with the same procedure without using silane. For each group, 1 × 1 × 8 mm bar specimens were prepared using a microcutting device. Bar specimens were thermocycled (10,000 cycle, 5° to 55℃) and microtensile tests were performed. Staining of the materials in coffee solution was also compared using a spectrophotometer. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA, t-test and post-hoc Scheffe tests. RESULTS. µTBS were found similar between the thermocycled and non-thermocycled groups (P>.05). The highest µTBS (20.818 MPa) was found in the non-thermocycled, bur-ground, silane-applied E group. Silane increased µTBS at some E groups (P<.05). Composite resin specimens showed more staining than CAD/CAM blocks (P<.05). CONCLUSION. CAD/CAM blocks can be repaired with composite resins after proper surface treatments. Using silane is recommended in repair process. Color differences may be shown between CAD/CAM blocks and the nanofill composite after a certain time period.
PURPOSE. To evaluate the effect of prolonged sandblasting on the bond durability of dual-cure adhesive resin cement to computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) restoratives. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Nano-ceramic LAVA Ultimate and hybrid-ceramic VITA Enamic CAD/CAM blocks were used for this study. Each CAD/CAM block was sectioned into slabs of 4-mm thickness for the microtensile test (${\mu}TBS$) test and 2-mm thickness for the surface roughness test. Three groups were created according to the sandblasting protocols; group 1: specimens were sandblasted for 15 seconds, group 2: specimens were sandblasted for 30 seconds, and group 3: specimens were sandblasted for 60 seconds. After sandblasting, all specimens were luted using RelyX Ultimate Clicker. Half the specimens were subjected to ${\mu}TBS$ tests at 24 hours, and the other half were subjected to tests after 5000 thermocycles. Additionally, a total of 96 CAD/CAM block sections were prepared for surface roughness tests and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) evaluations. The Mann-Whitney U test, Kruskal-Wallis one-way analysis of variance, and Dunn's post hoc test were used to compare continuous variables among the groups. RESULTS. At baseline, group 1, group 2, and group 3 exhibited statistically similar ${\mu}TBS$ results for LAVA. However, group 3 had significantly lower ${\mu}TBS$ values than groups 1 and 2 for VITA. After 5000 thermocycles, ${\mu}TBS$ values significantly decreased for each block (P<.05). CONCLUSION. It is important to perform controlled sandblasting because it may affect bond strength results. Sixty seconds of sandblasting disturbs the initial ${\mu}TBS$ values and the stability of adhesion of CAD/CAM restoratives to dual-cure adhesive resin cement for VITA Enamic.

Up to now, most researches on production automation have concentrated on local automation, e. g. CAD, CAM, robotics, etc. However, to achieve total automation it is required to link each local modules such as CAD, CAM into a unified and integrated system. One such missing link is between CAD and computer vision system. This thesis is an attempt to link the gap between CAD and computer vision system. In this paper, we propose algorithms that carry out edge detection, thinning and pruning from the image data of manufactured parts, which are obtained from video camera and then transmitted to computer. We also propose a feature extraction and surface determination algorithm which extract informations from the image data. The informations are compatible to IGES CAD data. In addition, we suggest a methodology to reduce search efforts for CAD data bases. The methodology is based on graph submatching algorithm in GEFG(Generalized Edge Face Graph) representation for each part.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the mechanical properties of polymer prosthetic and restorative materials for dental CAD/CAM using two test method; surface characteristics and shear bond strength. Methods: Commercialized CAD/CAM polymer blanks were investigated; One kinds of PMMA, and one PEKK blanks. A total of 20 PMMA and PEKK specimens were prepared, and each group was divided into 10 specimens. Average surface roughness was observed under surface profilometer. The contact angle was measured with a surface electrooptics. The bond strength was evaluated by a universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 5mm/min. The data were statistically analyzed using independent t-test and Fisher's exact test(P<0.05). Results: The PMMA and PEKK group showed a significant difference in the shear bond strength with the composite resin(P<0.05). The surface roughness of the PEKK group was higher than that of the PMMA group. The fracture mode were observed in PEKK groups with 50% showing adhesive remnant index score. Conclusion: PEEK is used as substructure material and composite veneering material is applied. PEKK resins will contribute to the development of successful products that will provide structural and aesthetic satisfaction.
A response surface method(RSM) is utilized for structural optimization and implemented on a parametric CAD platform. Once an approximation of the performance function is made, no formal design sensitivity analysis is necessary. The approximation gives the designer the sensitivity information and furthermore intuition on the performance functions. The scheme for the design of experiment chosen for the RSM has a large influence on the accuracy of converged solutions and the amount of computation. The D-optimal design criterion as implemented in this paper is found efficient for the structural optimization. The program is developed on a parametric CAD platform and tested using several shape design problems of such as a torque arm and a belt clip. It is observed that the RSM used provides a faster convergence than other approximation methods for design sensitivity.
Abstract Engineers and industrial designers want to produce a realistic-looking images of a 3D model without spending a lot of time and money. Photo-realistic images are so useful from the conceptual design, through its verification, to the machining, that most major CAD venders offer built-in as well as add-on photo-realistic rendering capability to their core CAD software. Since 3D model is consists of a set of NURB surfaces in commercial CAD packages, we need a renderer which handles NURB surface as well as other primitives.A new rendering library called VIF (Visual InterFace) provides two photo-realistic rendering modes: A-buffer and Ray tracing. As an input data it takes NURB surfaces as well as polygonal data and produces images in accordance with the surface parameters, view and lights set by user and outputs image with different formats. This paper describes the overall architecture of VIF and its library functions classified by their functionalities, and discusses how VIF is used as a graphical verification tool in manufacturing processes from the conceptual design to 3D modeling.
