  • As a fundamental research for the development of pumpkin products, the changes of carotenoids were investigated in hot air dried pumpkin powder packed in PE/nylon film during storage at 2$0^{\circ}C$ under the dark and bright conditions. Total amounts of carotenoids in the dehydrated pumpkin powder were reduced by 65~70 percentage without effect of light after one month. The carotenoids of pumpkin powder were separated to five spots without effect of light by TLC, but difference of color was not significant throughout the storage period. By the analysis of HPLC, leutin, under bright condition, was increased from 15 days of storage but under dark condition it was not changed for one month. Meanwhile, p-carotene, under bright condition, was decreased from 15 days of storage but under drak condition it was decreased from 25 days. The contents of lycopene and $\alpha$ -carotene did not show any significant change throughout the storage period. In color analysis, yellowness value was de- creased in bright as well as dark condition from 10 day storage.

  • The intent of this study was to determine whether different light exposure could modify the clothing behavior in the evening cold environment or not. Nine female subjects volunteered to this study. In a bright light or a dim light condition, light intensity was controlled 3000 lx or 10 lx respectively. Subjects were introduced to wear various kinds of garments whenever they need to feel comfortable as the room temperature began to decrease. The room temperature was lowered from $30^{\circ}C$ to $15^{\circ}C$ for one hour (21:00 h~22:00 h) and maintained at $15^{\circ}C$ for additional one hour (22:00 h~23:00 h). Subjects stayed in chamber from 08:00 to the next day 07:00. Clothing behavior, core temperature, subjective temperature sensation and melatonin secretion were measured. Most subjects put on the clothing more quickly and more thickerly in the bright light rather than in the dim light condition. The fall of core temperature during night was significantly less under the bright light in the late afternoon, suggesting that the set-point of core temperature has been set at a higher level during the evening and the night, being supported by the less amount of melatonin secretion. Thus, it is concluded that the quicker dressing behavior with thicker clothing in the "Bright" condition is advantageous in evening cold exposure, since it enables the core temperature to reach its set-point value more easily.

  • This paper proposes a new histogram partition stretching and shrinking method for infrared image enhancement. The proposed method divides the histogram of an input image into three partitions according to its mean value and standard deviation. The method stretches both the dark partition and the bright partition of the histogram, while it shrinks the medium partition. As the result, both the dark part and the bright part of the image have more brightness levels. The proposed method is implemented using C language in an embedded Linux system for a high-speed real-time image processing. Experiments were conducted by using various infrared images. The results show that the proposed algorithm is successful for the infrared image enhancement.

  • Like Hipparcos, Gaia is designed to give absolute parallaxes, independent of any astrophysical reference system. And indeed, Gaia's internal zero-point error for parallaxes is likely to be smaller than any individual parallax error. Nevertheless, due in part to mechanical issues of unknown origin, there are many astrophysical questions for which the parallax zero-point error ${\sigma}({\pi}_0)$ will be the fundamentally limiting constraint. These include the distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud and the Galactic Center. We show that by using the photometric parallax estimates for RR Lyrae stars (RRL) within 8kpc, via the ultra-precise infrared period-luminosity relation, one can independently determine a hyper-precise value for ${\pi}_0$. Despite their paucity relative to bright quasars, we show that RRL are competitive due to their order-of-magnitude improved parallax precision for each individual object relative to bright quasars. We show that this method is mathematically robust and well-approximated by analytic formulae over a wide range of relevant distances.

  • PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to compare mechanical and physical properties of injection-molded thermoplastic denture base resins. MATERIALS AND METHODS. In this study, six commercially available products (VA; Valplast, LC; Lucitone, ST; Smiltone, ES; Estheshot-Bright, AC; Acrytone, WE; Weldenz) were selected from four types of thermoplastic denture base materials (Polyamide, Polyester, Acrylic resin and Polypropylene). The flexural properties and shore D hardness have been investigated and water sorption and solubility, and color stability have evaluated. RESULTS. For the flexural modulus value, ES showed the highest value and WE showed significantly lower value than all other groups (P<.05). Most of experimental groups showed weak color stability beyond the clinically acceptable range. CONCLUSION. Within the limits of this study, thermoplastic denture base resin did not show sufficient modulus to function as a denture base. In addition, all resins showed discoloration with clinical significance, and especially polyamides showed the lowest color stability.

  • Objective: This study was conducted to test the effects of mobile texting and gaming on gait with obstructions under different illumination levels. Design: Cross-sectional study. Methods: Twelve healthy adults aged 20 to 36 years (mean 23.5 years) were tested under six different conditions. All participants used touchscreen smartphones. Testing conditions included: 1) Walking with an obstruction under a bright illumination level; 2) walking with an obstruction with a low level of illumination; 3) walking with an obstruction while texting under a bright illumination level; 4) walking with an obstruction while texting with a low level of illumination; 5) walking with an obstruction while gaming under a bright illumination level; and 6) walking with an obstruction while gaming with a low level of illumination. All participants were asked to text the Korean national anthem by their own phone and play Temple Run 2 using an iPhone 5. Gait variances were measured over a distance of 3 m, and the mean value after three trials was used. A gait analyzer was used to measure the data. Results: Compared to normal gait with obstruction, gait speed, step length, stride length, step time, stride time, cadence while texting and gaming showed significant differences (p<0.05). Differences between the illumination levels included gait speed, step length, stride length, and step time (p<0.05) with no significant differences in stride time and cadence. Conclusions: Dual-tasking using a smartphone under low levels of illumination lowers the quality of gait with obstructions.

  • In the remote sensing researches, the reflected bright source such as snow, cloud have effects on the image quality of wanted signal. Even though those signal from bright source are adjusted in corresponding pixel level with atmospheric correction algorithm or radiometric correction, those can be problem to the nearby signal as one of the stray light source. Especially, in the step and stare observational method which makes one mosaic image with several snap shots, one of target area can affect next to the other snap shot each other. Presented in this paper focused on the stray light analysis from unwanted reflected bright source for geostationary ocean color sensor. The stray light effect for total 16 slot images each other were performed according to 8 band filters. For the realistic simulation, we constructed system modeling with integrated ray tracing technique which realizes the same space time in the remote sensing observation among the Sun, the Earth, and the satellite. Computed stray light effect in the results of paper demonstrates the distinguishable radiance value at the specific time and space.

  • Molecules always show broad absorption band envelopes, and this results from the vibrational properties of bonds. The width of an absorption band can have an important influence on the color of a dye. A narrow band imparts a bright, spectrally pure color to the dye, whereas a broad band can give the same hue, but with a much duller appearance. Typically, half-band widths of cyanine dyes are about 25nm compared to value of over 50nm for typical merocyanine dyes. Thus, cyanine dyes are exceptionally bright. The factors influencing the width of an absorption band can be understood with reference to the Morse curves. The width of the absorption band depends on how closely the bond order of the molecules in the first excited state resembles that in the ground state. We have quantitatively evaluated the "molecular structure-absorption band shape" relationship of dye molecules by means of Pariser-Parr-Pople Molecular Orbital Method(PPP-MO).
