Evaluating and improving system reliability of bridge structure using gamma distribution

  • In this paper, we study a system of five components. One of them is a bridge network component. Each of these components is identical and has a failure rate as a function of time. The system components have non-constant failure rates. The given system is improved by using the reduction, hot duplication, and cold duplication methods. We derive the equivalence factors of the bridge structure system to be as another system improved according to these different methods. The ${\beta}-fractiles$ are obtained to compare the original system with these improved systems. Finally, we present numerical results to show the difference between these methods.

케이블교량의 부재 설계를 지배하는 하중조합에 대한 신뢰도지수 평가 (Evaluation of Reliability Index of Governing Load Combination for Design of Cable Supported Bridge Members)

  • 이 논문에서는 케이블교량 설계기준의 설계하중조합에 대한 신뢰도분석을 수행하였다. 설계기준에서 정의한 하중계수와 저항계수를 적용하여 설계된 실제 케이블교량을 대상으로 주 부재별 통계특성과 설계지배 하중조합을 분석하였다. 신뢰도분석을 통하여 하중조합별로 설정된 목표신뢰도지수를 확보됨을 확인하였고, 교량의 중요도를 상향할 수 있는 저항수정계수의 적용성을 검토하였다. 설계변수들이 신뢰도지수에 미치는 민감도 분석을 통하여 케이블의 신뢰도에 중요한 영향을 주는 요소를 분석하였다. 이를 통하여 설계기준의 안전계수들을 적용한 설계를 통하여 케이블교량의 목표신뢰도지수를 확보할 수 있음을 확인하였다.

Flutter reliability analysis of suspension bridges based on multiplicative dimensional reduction method

  • A reliability analysis method is proposed in this paper based on the maximum entropy (MaxEnt) principle in which constraints are specified in terms of the fractional moments instead of integer moments. Then a multiplicative dimensional reduction method (M-DRM) is introduced to compute the fractional moments. The method is applicable for both explicit and implicit limit state functions of complex structures. After two examples illustrate the accuracy and efficiency of this method in comparison to the Monte Carlo simulation (MCS), the method is used to analyze the flutter reliability of suspension bridge. The results show that the empirical formula method in which the limit state function is explicitly represented as a function of variables is only a too conservative estimate for flutter reliability analysis but is not accurate adequately. So it is not suitable for reliability analysis of bridge flutter. The actual flutter reliability analysis should be conducted based on a finite element method in which limit state function is implicitly represented as a function of variables. The proposed M-DRM provide an alternate and efficient way to analyze a much more complicated flutter reliability of long span suspension bridge.

  • 본 연구는 교량/궤도 종방향 해석 및 교량/차량 동적영향을 고려한 설계기법에 대한 효율성 및 경제성을 증명하기 위하여 수행하였다. 신뢰성에 기초한 생애주기비용 최적설계는 기존 설계기법에 의한 설계, 초기비용에 기초한 최적설계, 등가 생애주기비용 최적설계에 의한 최적설계와 비교하기 위하여 5$\times$(1@50m) 경간 소수주형 교량을 대상으로 적용하였다. 신뢰성에 기초한 최적설계 결과 교량/궤도 종방향 해석 및 교량/차량 동적영향을 고려한 고속철도 교량 설계 단면이 교량/궤도 종방향 해석 및 교량/차량 동적영향을 고려하지 않은 설계 단면보다 훨씬 효율적임을 확인 하였다.

Vehicle-bridge coupling vibration analysis based fatigue reliability prediction of prestressed concrete highway bridges

  • The extensive use of prestressed reinforced concrete (PSC) highway bridges in marine environment drastically increases the sensitivity to both fatigue-and corrosion-induced damage of their critical structural components during their service lives. Within this scenario, an integrated method that is capable of evaluating the fatigue reliability, identifying a condition-based maintenance, and predicting the remaining service life of its critical components is therefore needed. To accomplish this goal, a procedure for fatigue reliability prediction of PSC highway bridges is proposed in the present study. Vehicle-bridge coupling vibration analysis is performed for obtaining the equivalent moment ranges of critical section of bridges under typical fatigue truck models. Three-dimensional nonlinear mathematical models of fatigue trucks are simplified as an eleven-degree-of-freedom system. Road surface roughness is simulated as zero-mean stationary Gaussian random processes using the trigonometric series method. The time-dependent stress-concentration factors of reinforcing bars and prestressing tendons are accounted for more accurate stress ranges determination. The limit state functions are constructed according to the Miner's linear damage rule, the time-dependent S-N curves of prestressing tendons and the site-specific stress cycle prediction. The effectiveness of the methodology framework is demonstrated to a T-type simple supported multi-girder bridge for fatigue reliability evaluation.

  • Reliability analysis of the design of reinforced concrete rahmen bridge is performed. Statistical properties for loads and resistances are taken into account in the analysis and the reliability indices are calculated for strength limit state of the current bridge design specification. Results are presented and discussed for different span lengths and wall heights.

A Fault-Tolerant Control Strategy for Cascaded H-Bridge Multilevel Rectifiers

  • Reliability is an important issue in cascaded H-bridge converters (CHB converters) because they use a high number of power semiconductors. A faulty power cell in a CHB converter can potentially lead to expensive downtime and great losses on the consumer side. With a fault-tolerant control strategy, operation can continue with the undamaged cells; thus increasing the reliability of the system. In this paper, the operating principles and the control method for a CHB multilevel rectifier are introduced. The influence of various faults on the CHB converter is investigated. The method of fault diagnosis and the bypassing of failed cells are explained. A fault-tolerant protection strategy is proposed to achieve redundancy in the CHB rectifier. The redundant H-bridge concept helps to deal with device failures and to increase system reliability. Simulation results verify the performance of the proposed strategy.

Design and Research on High-Reliability HPEBB Used in Cascaded DSTATCOM

  • The H-bridge inverter is the fundamental power cell of the cascaded distribution static synchronous compensator (DSTATCOM). Thus, cell reliability is important to the compensation performance and stability of the overall system. The concept of the power electronics building block (PEBB) is an ideal solution for the power cell design. In this paper, an H-bridge inverter-based “plug and play” HPEBB is introduced into the main circuit and the controller to improve the compensation performance and reliability of the device. The section that discusses the main circuit primarily emphasizes the design of electrical parameters, physical structure, and thermal dissipation. The section that presents the controller part focuses on the principle of complex programmable logic device -based universal controller This section also analyzes typical reliability and anti-interference issues. The function and reliability of HPEBB are verified by experiments that are conducted on an HPEBB test-bed and on a 10 kV/± 10 Mvar DSTATCOM industrial prototype.

Reliability Equivalence Factors of a Bridge Network System

  • Improvements of a bridge network system are studied in this paper. Then equivalence between different improved designs of the bridge network system is discussed. Three different methods are used to get different better designs of the network in the sense of having higher reliability and mean time to failure. Then two different types of reliability equivalence factors of the system are derived. It is assumed here that the failure rates of the system's components are identical and constant. The reliability functions and mean time to failure of the original and improved designs of the network are derived. Comparison between the mean time to failures of the original system and improved designs of the system are presented. Numerical studies and conclusion are presented in order to explain how one can apply the the theoretical results obtained.

신뢰도 기반 플레이트 거더교의 여유도 평가 기법 (Reliability-based Redundancy Evaluation Method for Steel Plate Girder Bridges)

  • 교량의 여유도는 주부재의 손상시 하중을 지탱할 수 있는 능력으로서 거더 개수, 지간, 형고, 내부지점, 부부재 등의 다양한 인자가 영향을 미치게 된다. 그러나, AASHTO 및 국내 도로교설계기준과 같은 현행 규정에서는 교량의 여유도를 단지 주거더의 개수로만 정의하고 있고, 그 평가 방법 및 요구 수준은 아직 제시되지 않고 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 플레이트거더교를 대상으로 심각한 피로손상이 발생한 경우 주요 인자들을 고려하고 신뢰도 기법에 기반하여 교량의 여유도 평가 기법을 제안하였다. 또한, LRFD법 기반의 기준 교량에 대해 손상 시 내하력 해석과 신뢰성 해석을 수행하여 여유도의 요구 수준을 목표 시스템 신뢰도 지수 형태로 제안하였다. 마지막으로 현행 ASD법으로 설계된 단순 및 연속 플레이트거더교의 거더 수에 따른 여유도 수준을 평가 제시하였다.
