  • This paper proposes a robust and efficient segmentation method for a cardiac ultrasound image taken from a probe inserted into the heart in surgery. The method consists of three steps: initial boundary extraction, whole boundary modification using confidence competition, and local boundary modification using the rolling spoke method. Firstly, the initial boundary is extracted with threshold regions along the global spokes emitted from the center of an ultrasound probe. Secondly, high confidence boundary edges are detected along the global spokes by competing among initial boundary candidate and new candidates achieved by edge and appearance information. finally, the boundary is modified by rolling local spokes along concave regions that are difficult to extract using the global spokes. The proposed method produces promising segmentation results for the ultrasound cardiac images acquired during surgery.

  • 3D posture recognition is a solution to overcome the limitation of 2D posture recognition. There are many researches carried out for 3D posture recognition using 3D data. The 3D data consist of massive surface points which are rich of information. However, it is difficult to extract the important features for posture recognition purpose. Meanwhile, it also consumes lots of processing time. In this paper, we introduced a dimension reduction method that transform 3D surface points of an object to 2D data representation in order to overcome the issues of feature extraction and time complexity of 3D posture recognition. For a better feature extraction and matching process, a cylindrical boundary is introduced in meshless parameterization, its offer a fast processing speed of dimension reduction process and the output result is applicable for recognition purpose. The proposed approach is applied to hand and human posture recognition in order to verify the efficiency of the feature extraction.

  • Research on the development of marine renewable energy is actively in progress. Various studies are being conducted on the development of wave energy converters. In this study, a numerical analysis of wave-energy extraction performance was performed according to the body shape and scale of the sloped oscillating water column (OWC) wave energy converter (WEC), which can be connected with the breakwater. The sloped OWC WEC was modeled in the time domain using a two-dimensional fully nonlinear numerical wave tank. The nonlinear free surface condition in the chamber was derived to represent the pneumatic pressure owing to the wave column motion and viscous energy loss at the chamber entrance. The free surface elevations in the sloped chamber were calculated at various incident wave periods. For verification, the results were compared with the 1:20 scaled model test. The maximum wave energy extraction was estimated with a pneumatic damping coefficient. To calculate the energy extraction of the actual size WEC, OWC models approximately 20 times larger than the scale model were calculated, and the viscous damping coefficient according to each size was predicted and applied. It was verified that the energy, owing to the airflow in the chamber, increased as the incident wave period increased, and the maximum efficiency of energy extraction was approximately 40% of the incident wave energy. Under the given incident wave conditions, the maximum extractable wave power at a chamber length of 5 m and a skirt draft of 2 m was approximately 4.59 kW/m.

  • Mineral carbonation has been proposed as a possible way for $CO_2$ sequestration. The electric arc furnace slags consist of calcium, magnesium and aluminum silicates in various combinations. If they could be used instead of natural mineral silicates for carbonation, considerable energy savings and $CO_2$ emissions reductions could be achieved. Indirect aqueous carbonation of the slags consists of two steps, extraction of calcium and carbonation. Acetic acid leaching of electric arc furnace slags had been already studied to extract Ca in them, but it was reported that the carbonation of the extracted $Ca^{2+}$ in the leached solution would suffer from too slow kinetics, even at high pressure of $CO_2$. In this work, to develop more efficient extraction of the electric arc furnace slags, hydrochloric acid leaching to separate calcium from them was studied, and the results were compared with the acetic acid ones. The phase boundary between $Ca^{2+}$ and $CaCO_3$ in the solution with pH was determined by thermodynamic calculations. Hydrochloric acid was more effective than acetic acid for the extraction of Ca in electric arc furnace slag, and there is a possibility to recycle an unreacted hydrochloric acid in the leached solution by electrolysis or evaporation.

  • As the telematics service that is the integration of information technology approaches commercialization, the necessity and gravity of speech technology is rapidly growing. The speech technology occupies important position in the telematics service because it informs the starting of service and the retrieved result. This service must provide high accuracy of speech recognition and natural synthesis of human speech in a driving environment and it is especially true for the fee-for-service. For high quality TTS, the speech synthesis technique that makes optimal synthesis database and uses efficiently this database is required. In this paper, we describe the design of phonetically balanced sentences used for speech database, the selection of service-suitable-speaker, the extraction methods of accurate phoneme boundary, and the factors which are taken into consideration in the extraction stage of prosody. Finally we show the real case that has commercially implemented.

  • The study on shilla monumental inscription has been accomplished by many historians. However, the research on segmentation of monumental inscription image using digital image processing is not sufficient for restoration of the image. Although, many image processing methods have been proposed for region extraction in still image, there is no suitable method for accurate interpretation of monumental inscription image. To distinguish foreground and background region in the image, this paper presents new segmentation algorithm composed of contrast adjustment and median filtering, thresholding and sobel operation, as pre-processing and post-processing. The result show that background and foreground regions are segmented in monumental inscription image.

  • This paper presents an algorithm that extracts road lane's specific information by using HSI color information and performance enhancement of lane detection base on vision processing of drive assist. As a preprocessing for high speed lane detection, the optimal extraction of region of interest for lane boundary(ROI-LB) can be processed to reduction of detection region in which high speed processing is enabled and it also increases reliabilities by deleting edges those are misrecognized. Road lane is extracted with simultaneous processing of noise reduction and edge enhancement using the Laplacian filter, the reliability of feature extraction can be increased for various road lane patterns. Since noise can be removed by using saturation and brightness of HSI color model. Also it searches for the road lane's color information and extracts characteristics. The real road experimental results are presented to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • This paper presents a high performance disparity extraction algorithm that generate a dense and accurate disparity map using low-resolution disparity histogram. Disparity distribution of background and object areas can besegmented from low-resolution disparity histogram. These information can be used to reduce the search area and search range of the high-resolution image resulting reliable disparity information in high speed. The computationally efficient matching pixel count(MPC) similarity measure technique is useed extensively toremove the redundancies inherent in the area-based matching method, and also results robust matching at the boundary region. Resulting maches are further improved using iterative support algorithm and post processing. We have obtained good results on randomdot stereogram and real images obtained in our carmera system.

  • Hydroxyapatite powder was injected into the tooth after decayed tooth clinic. The microstructure of tooth was observed after a tooth extraction in the body. The hydroxyapatite powder was stiffened and the junction of hydroxyapatite powder and tooth was observed. The Ca/P atomic ratio of hydroxyapatite-tooth boundary was higher than hydroxyapatite matrix. And microhardness of hydroxyapatite matrix was 92.4 Hv. The junction of hydroxyapatite powder and tooth was due to the $Ca^{2+}$ ion shift of hydroxyapatite or the firm waxy body was due to setting of hydroxyapatite powder.

  • We present a novel active contour-based two-pass approach to extract smooth feature regions from a triangular mesh. In the first pass, an active contour formulated in level-set surfaces is devised to extract feature regions with rough boundaries. In the second pass, the rough boundary curve is smoothed by minimizing internal energy, which is derived from its curvature. The separation of the extraction and smoothing process enables us to extract feature regions with smooth boundaries from a triangular mesh without user's initial model. Furthermore, smooth feature curves can also be obtained by skeletonizing the smooth feature regions. We tested our algorithm on facial models and proved its excellence.
