A numerical solution method of the boundary integral equation for axisymmetric potential flows is presented. Those are represented by ring source and ring vorticity distribution. Strengths of ring source and ring vorticity are approximated by linear functions of a parameter $\zeta$ on a segment. The geometry of the body is represented by a cubic B-spline. Limiting integral expressions as the field point tends to the surface having ring source and ring vorticity distribution are derived upto the order of ${\zeta}ln{\zeta}$. In numerical calculations, the principal value integrals over the adjacent segments cancel each other exactly. Thus the singular part proportional to $\(\frac{1}{\zeta}\)$ can be subtracted off in the calculation of the induced velocity by singularities. And the terms proportional to $ln{\zeta}$ and ${\zeta}ln{\zeta}$ can be integrated analytically. Thus those are subtracted off in the numerical calculations and the numerical value obtained from the analytic integrations for $ln{\zeta}$ and ${\zeta}ln{\zeta}$ are added to the induced velocity. The four point Gaussian Quadrature formula was used to evaluate the higher order terms than ${\zeta}ln{\zeta}$ in the integration over the adjacent segments to the field points and the integral over the segments off the field points. The root mean square errors, $E_2$, are examined as a function of the number of nodes to determine convergence rates. The convergence rate of this method approaches 2.

Herein the surge-heave-pitch motion of a ship in harbor has been analyzed within the framework of linear potential theory. The ship is assumed to be slender and moored at an arbitrary position in a rectangular harbor with a constant depth. The coast line is assumed to be straight. The ship and harbor responses to incident long waves are represented in terms of Green's function, which is the solution of tole Helmholtz equation satisfying necessary boundary conditions. An integral equation is obtained from matching condition between harbor and ocean solutions, and it is replaced by an equivalent variational form. Numerical results sallow that the ship motion can be highly amplified at the frequencies, where the harbor is resonated by the incident wave. At the resonant frequencies, the added mass for vertical motions becomes negative and the damping forte changes abruptly.
We will explain a new method for obtaining the nearly optimal domain for optimal shape design problems associated with the solution of a nonlinear wave equation. Taking into account the boundary and terminal conditions of the system, a new approach is applied to determine the optimal domain and its related optimal control function with respect to the integral performance criteria, by use of positive Radon measures. The approach, say shape-measure, consists of two steps; first for a fixed domain, the optimal control will be identified by the use of measures. This function and the optimal value of the objective function depend on the geometrical variables of the domain. In the second step, based on the results of the previous one and by applying some convenient optimization techniques, the optimal domain and its related optimal control function will be identified at the same time. The existence of the optimal solution is considered and a numerical example is also given.

Exact solution for nonlinear behavior of clamped-clamped functionally graded (FG) buckled beams is presented. The effective material properties are considered to vary along the thickness direction according to exponential-law form. The in-plane inertia and damping are neglected, and hence the governing equations are reduced to a single nonlinear fourth-order partial-integral-differential equation. The von Kármán geometric nonlinearity has been considered in the formulation. Galerkin procedure is used to obtain a second order nonlinear ordinary equation with quadratic and cubic nonlinear terms. Based on the mode of the corresponding linear problem, which readily satisfy the boundary conditions, the frequencies for the nonlinear problem are obtained using the Jacobi elliptic functions. The effects of various parameters such as the Young's modulus ratio, the beam slenderness ratio, the vibration amplitude and the magnitude of axial load on the nonlinear behavior are examined.
A matrix partitioning method is proposed for the 2-D motion analysis of floating bodies. For the numerical solution, the boundary of a floating body is approximated with a series of line segments and the governing integral equation is transformed into a system of linear equations. A new solution procedure of resulting linear equation with complex coefficients is formulated and programmed using a matrix partitioning scheme and the Choleski decomposition. From the case study, it is found that the proposed method is efficient in the motion analysis of floating bodies, especially in the calculation of hydrodynamic coefficients. Also, it requires smaller memory size and less computing time compared with conventional methods.
The present paper deals with the determination of displacement and thermal stresses in a semi-infinite circular cylinder defined as $0{\leq}r{\leq}b$, $0{\leq}z<{\infty}$, due to internal heat generation within it. A circular cylinder is considered having arbitrary initial temperature and subjected to time dependent heat flux at the fixed circular boundary (r = b) whereas the zero temperature at the lower surface (z = 0) of the semi-infinite circular cylinder. The governing heat conduction equation has been solved by using integral transform method. The results are obtained in series form in terms of Bessel functions. The results for displacement and stresses have been computed numerically and illustrated graphically.

Dynamic behavior of flexible rectangular liquid containers is analyzed by a two-dimensional coupled boundary element-finite element method. The irrotational motion of inviscid and incompressible ideal fluid is modeled by boundary elements and the motion of structure by finite elements. A singularity free integral formulation is employed for the implementation of boundary element method. Coupling is performed by using compatibility and equilibrium conditions along the interface between the fluid and structure. The fluid-structure interaction effects are reflected into the coupled equation of motion as added fluid mass matrix and sloshing stiffness matrix. By solving the eigen-problem for the coupled equation of motion, natural frequencies and mode shapes of coupled system are obtained. The free surface sloshing motion and hydrodynamic pressure developed in a flexible rectangular container due to horizontal and vertical ground motions are computed in time domain.

This paper presents a comparative study of analytical method, finite element method (FEM) and Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) for analysis of a contact problem. The problem consists of a functionally graded (FG) layer resting on a half plane and pressed with distributed load from the top. Firstly, analytical solution of the problem is obtained by using theory of elasticity and integral transform techniques. The problem is reduced a system of integral equation in which the contact pressure are unknown functions. The numerical solution of the integral equation was carried out with Gauss-Jacobi integration formulation. Secondly, finite element model of the problem is constituted using ANSYS software and the two-dimensional analysis of the problem is carried out. The results show that contact areas and the contact stresses obtained from FEM provide boundary conditions of the problem as well as analytical results. Thirdly, the contact problem has been extended based on the MLP. The MLP with three-layer was used to calculate the contact distances. Material properties and loading states were created by giving examples of different values were used at the training and test stages of MLP. Program code was rewritten in C++. As a result, average deviation values such as 0.375 and 1.465 was obtained for FEM and MLP respectively. The contact areas and contact stresses obtained from FEM and MLP are very close to results obtained from analytical method. Finally, this study provides evidence that there is a good agreement between three methods and the stiffness parameters has an important effect on the contact stresses and contact areas.

A three-dimensional time-domain calculation method is of crucial importance in prediction of the motions and wave loads of a ship advancing in a severe irregular sea. The exact solution of the free surface wave-ship interaction problem is very complicated because of the essentially nonlinear boundary conditions. In this paper, an approximate body nonlinear approach based on the three-dimensional time-domain forward-speed free-surface Green function has been presented. The Froude-Krylov force and the hydrostatic restoring force are calculated over the instantaneous wetted surface of the ship while the forces due to the radiation and scattering potentials over the mean wetted surface. The time-domain radiation and scattering potentials have been obtained from a time invariant kernel of integral equations for the potentials which are discretized according to the second-order boundary element method (Hong and Hong 2008). The diffraction impulse-response functions of the Wigley seakeeping model advancing in transient head waves at various Froude numbers have been presented. A simulation of coupled heave-pitch motion of a long rectangular barge advancing in regular head waves of large amplitude has been carried out. Comparisons between the linear and the approximate body nonlinear numerical results of motions and wave loads of the barge at a nonzero Froude number have been made.
