The Dongdaemoon complex stadium is scheduled to remodelled into an international park, which will be named Design Plaza. The Dongdaemoon baseball field was constructed with Rahmen Structure which comprised beams, slabs and columns. In order to assure for viewing, the stadium was composed unusual structure that the height of the front column and the back column was designed differently. The bleachers was an upper arch form for viewing. The slab was not flat unliked the general infrastructure and tilted in stairway type for viewing. If we had applied the mechanical demolition method, we could have predicted several problems. Firstly, the stand could be unstable when the heavy equipment was to crush the reinforced concrete on the slab. Because the slab was not flat. Secondly, the construction expense and construction duration could be increase when the large equipment was to crush the reinforced concrete on the ground. Because the height of the stand was too high to crush on the ground so it needed to build a filling. Thus, we applied both the mechanical demolition method and explosives demolition method at the design stage. The result of explosives demolition was of complete success in terms of structural movement and controlled blasting noise and vibration. This case study provided a good example for a successful application of explosives demolition in urban areas.

This case study is concerned with the project of the explosive demolition for the DCRE Incheon plant located in Hakik district in Incheon city. The building was severely aging due to the high temperature and sea winds of hundreds of degrees emitted by chimney-shaped steel structures inside the building. Due to this, the concrete of the column and the beam fell off and rusted rebar were exposed, and some of the slabs were severely damaged, making it difficult for workers to access the structure. Therefore, it is not possible to apply a mechanical demolition method in which heavy equipment enters the interior of the building, and an explosive demolition method was applied to allow the building to be demolished without dismantling the internal facilities of the building. The order of blasting proceeded in the order of (1) building ${\rightarrow}$ (2) chimney 2 ${\rightarrow}$ (3) chimney 1. A total of 406 electronic detonators (Unitronic 600) was used to sequentially initiate the explosives installed at appropriate in building and chimneys.
Safety concern is one of the most important parameters in the design of building demolition by explosive blasting, Accidents were sometimes reported due to the flying chips of fragmented materials In building demolition work in urban area. Laboratory experiments were performed to investigate the failure behavior of reinforced concrete pillars under blast loading and to develop an effective protection technique. Sixteen reinforced concrete pillars were constructed. The failure behavior and the flying chip velocities were observed by means of a high-speed camera. Protection scheme was designed and the effects of several protection materials were investigated. Two kinds of non-woven fabrics and wire net were tested as protection materials. The results showed that reinforcing bar was one of the important factors to determine specific charges, and that mesh size of wire net and tied-up method affected the protection of flying chips. Control of gas effects is also a key to the control of flying chips. It was recommended to use both wire net and non-woven fabrics as primary and secondary protection materials. Such protection scheme was successfully applied to the explosive demolition of apartment buildings.
Recently, several cases of destruction of old cylindrical silos by explosive demolition method have been reported. This study deals with the subject concerning the pre-weakening of a cylindrical concrete silo for the application of overturning explosive demolition method. In the past, the pre-weakening operation of structure in explosive demolition has been done by use of some empirical methods. These empirical approaches, however, have possibilities of unexpected accidents. In order to provide a guideline for the pre-weakening of cylindrical silos and similar structures, this paper shows the result of a case study, in which the instability of a silo due to pre-weakening is investigated by a numerical structural analysis before actually conducting pre-weakening and demolition operations.
R.O.K's explosive manufacturing source was first black powder (B.P) introduced into Korea Dynasty from China. In 1890, black powder was first used for mining blasting in Masan. Nowadays, a vibration control blasting method using the emulsion explosive has been applid to explosive demolition of building structure, subway and road construction sites. In December, 2006, Korean Government and professional society (KSEE) established the blasting guidelines of Modern Vibration Controlled Blasting Method (MVCBM) which is an unprecedented in the world.
In blasting demolition, a method would be chosen among many depends on shape and system of a structure and its surround. To demolish using explosives a structure, which is asymmetric and with high aspect ratio, pre-weakening, explosive locations, detonating delay, and surround conditions are needed to be considered in front to design blasting demolition plan. In this study, to over turn asymmetric and high aspect ratio structure in safe, a simulation using a software named Extreme Loadings for Structures, ELS, had performed. In results, it is achieved optimized pre-weakening shapes and locations, which prevent kick back motion of the structure when it collapse, by analyzing moment distribution caused by pre-weakening. And of structural collapse and by minimizing asymmetric structure's torsional moment. Also, after the demolition, simulation results are also compared with actual collapse behavior. In results, it is confirmed the accuracy of collapse behaviour simulation results, and in blasting demolition, kick back motion can be controled by adjusting pre-weakening shape and location, and the torsional moment of an asymmetric structure also can be solved by optimizing detonation locations and its time intervals.
Progressive collapse is generally defined as a local failure of structural members occurring due to abnormal load which results in the partial collapse or total collapse of a structure. Unlike progressive collapse, explosive demolition is a method of inducing the total collapse of structure by removing all or portion of structural members. In explosive demolition the partial collapse of the structural members can be controlled at appropriate time intervals by blasting, to induce the progressive collapse of the structure and control the collapse behavior. In this study, a nonlinear dynamic analysis was carried out in order to apply the progressive collapse process to explosive demolition design of the RC structure. The occurrence of progressive collapse of analytical models was examined according to the number of floors, the removed column height and span length. For models that resisted progressive collapse, progressive collapse resisting capacity was evaluated.
Domestic explosive demolition techniques have been developed and applied for low-rise structures up to now. However, the demand for the development of those techniques that can be applied economically, safely and environment-friendly rapidly increases because the old high-rise RC rahmen structures that were built since around 1970s are now required to rebuild. As a result, element technologies of explosive demolition for low-rise structures were applied to take advantage of technology in high-rise structures that performed application testing at Chungang Department demolition field in Daejeon city. It could judge elements technology establishment for high-rise structure demolition and field application and suggest the improvements when the problems occurred to develop High-rise building demolition techniques for method of protection a field test and the dust reduction test. The water cannon test was applied to reduce the dust site and the drilling tests are performed to select the best components for explosives demolition elements techniques of the reliability. This paper shows that we have the ability to remove a high-rise building using environmentally friendly safe and economical explosives demolition method. It would contribute to prevent a foreign company from entering the domestic market and should contribute to acquire competitiveness of domestic demolition industry.
In this study, scaled model tests were performed on blasting demolition of reinforced concrete structures and the experimental results were analyzed in comparison with the results of numerical analysis. The tests were designed to induce a progressive collapse, and physical properties of the scaled model were determined using scale factors obtained ken dimension analysis. The scaled model structure was made of a mixture of plaster, sand and water at the ratio determined to yield the best scaled-down strength. Lead wire was used as a substitute for reinforcing bars. The scaled length was at the ratio of 1/10. Selecting the material and scaled factors was aimed at obtaining appropriately scaled-down strength. PFC2D (Particle Flow Code 2-Dimension) employing DEM (Distinct Element Method) was used for the numerical analysis. Blasting demolition of scaled 3-D plain concrete laymen structure was filmed and compared to results of numerical simulation. Despite the limits of 2-D simulation the resulting demolition behaviors were similar to each other. Based on the above experimental results in combination with bending test results of RC beam, numerical analysis was carried out to determine the blasting sequence and delay times. Scaled model test of RC structure resulted in remarkably similar collapse with the numerical results up to 900㎳ (mili-second).
