A new disposable amperometric tri-enzyme biosensor for the detection of paracetamol has been developed. The paracetamol sensors developed uses horseradish peroxidase modified screen-printed carbon electrodes (HRP-SPCEs) coupled with immobilized enzymes, tyrosinase and aryl acylamidase, prepared using a poly (vinyl alcohol) bearing styrylpyridinium groups (PVA-SbQ) matrix. Optimization of the experimental parameters has been performed and the paracetamol biosensor showed detection limit for paracetamol is as low as $100{\mu}M$ and the sensitivity of the sensor is $1.46nA{\mu}M^{-1}cm^{-2}$.
A monitoring apparatus for pulse shapes of human heartbeats has been developed using an amorphous MI(Magnetic Impedance) sensor. The pulse shapes are successfully obtained from voltage signals due to the variations of magnetic impedance in the amorphous MI sensor, which is attached to a patient's wrist. This voltage signal was fed into a signal processing module to extract the pulse shapes of heartbeats. The signal processing module, which is proposed to detect a weak variations of impedance in MI sensor under a noisy measurement environment, consists of a high frequency current source, an amplifier stage and a synchronous detection circuit. To evaluate the characteristics of a newly developed apparatus, various experiments were performed. The experimental results show that the developed apparatus could be used as a diagnosis tool for traditional Korean medicine with further systematic clinical studies.

We present the preparation and characteristics of liquid-phase sensors based on nano-porous silicon multilayer structures for determination of organic content in gasoline. The principle of the sensor is a determination of the cavity-resonant wavelength shift caused by refractive index change of the nano-porous silicon multilayer cavity due to the interaction with liquids. We use the transfer matrix method (TMM) for the design and prediction of characteristics of microcavity sensors based on nano-porous silicon multilayer structures. The preparation process of the nano-porous silicon microcavity is based on electrochemical etching of single-crystal silicon substrates, which can exactly control the porosity and thickness of the porous silicon layers. The basic characteristics of sensors obtained by experimental measurements of the different liquids with known refractive indices are in good agreement with simulation calculations. The reversibility of liquid-phase sensors is confirmed by fast complete evaporation of organic solvents using a low vacuum pump. The nano-porous silicon microcavity sensors can be used to determine different kinds of organic fuel mixtures such as bio-fuel (E5), A92 added ethanol and methanol of different concentrations up to 15%.

As the rising attention to the medical and healthcare issue, Bio-MEMS (Micro electro mechanical systems) platform such as bio sensor, cell culture system, and microfluidics device has been studied extensively. Bio-MEMS platform mostly has high resolution structure made by biocompatible material such as polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). In addition, three dimension structure has been applied to the bio-MEMS. Lithography can be used to fabricate complex structure by multiple process, however, non-rectangular cross section can be implemented by introducing optical apparatus to lithography technic. X-ray lithography can be used even for sub-micron scale. Here in, we demonstrated lines with round shape cross section using the tilted gold absorber which was deposited on the oblique structure as the X-ray mask. This structure was used as a mold for PDMS. Molded PDMS was applied to the cell culture platform. Moreover, molded PDMS was bonded to flat PDMS to utilize to the sub-micro channel. This work has potential to the large area bio-MEMS.
This paper reports a novel immunoassay method using superparamagnetic nanoparticles and an enhanced magnetic field gradient for the detection of protein in a microfluidic device. We use superparamagnetic nanoparticles as a label and fluorescent polystyrene beads as a solid support. Based on this platform, magnetic force-based microfluidic immunoassay is successfully applied to analyze the concentration of IgG as model analytes. In addition, we present ferromagnetic microstructure connected with a permanent magnet to increase magnetic flux density gradient (dB/dx, ${\sim}10^{4}$ T/m), which makes limit of detection reduced. The detection limit is reduced to about 1 pg/mL.

The recent development of bio-conjugated magnetic nanoparticles offers many opportunities for applications in the field of biomedicine. In particular, the use of magnetic nanoparticles for biosensing has generated widespread research efforts following the progress of various magnetic field sensors. Here we demonstrate substrate-free biosensing approaches based on the Brownian rotation of ferromagnetic nanoparticles suspended in liquids. The signal transduction is through the measurement of the magnetic ac susceptibility as a function of frequency, whose peak position changes due to the modification of the hydrodynamic radius of bio-conjugated magnetic nanoparticles upon binding to target bio-molecules. The advantage of this approach includes its relative simplicity and integrity compared to methods that use substrate-based stray-field detectors.
A microcantilever is a well-known MEMS structure for sensing bio-chemical molecules. When bio-chemical molecules are adsorbed on the microcantilever's surface, resonance frequency shift is generated. There are two issues in this phenomena. The first one is which one between mass change and surface stress change effects is more dominant on the resonance frequency shift. The second one is what will be the performance change when the boundary condition is changed from cantilevers to double clamped beams. We have studied the effect of surface stress change and compared it with that of mass change by using FEM analysis. Furthermore, for microstructures having different boundary conditions, we have studied Q-factor, which determines the detection limit of micro/nano mechanical sensors.
In this work, we prepared porous WO3 nanofibers (NFs) functionalized by bio-inspired catalytic $Cr_2O_3$ and $Co_3O_4$ nanoparticles as highly sensitive and selective $H_2S$ gas sensing layers. Highly porous 3-dimensional (3D) NFs networks decorated by well-dispersed catalyst NPs exhibited superior $H_2S$ gas response ($R_{air}/R_{gas}$ = 46 at 5 ppm) in high humidity environment (95 %RH). In particular, the sensors showed outstanding $H_2S$ selectivity against other interfering analytes (such as acetone, toluene, CO, $H_2$, ethanol). Exhaled breath sensors using $Cr_2O_3$ and $Co_3O_4$ catalysts-loaded $WO_3$ NFs are highly promising for the accurate detection of halitosis.
