  • The purpose of this study is to investigate how individuals assess Chinese, Japanese, and Korean (CJK) transliterated bibliographic information on current library catalogs. Two separate studies, a survey and an experiment, were conducted using the WorldCat system. Users noted that Romanization has many issues which can inhibit user‘s ability to understand the transliterated bibliographic information even when it is in the person’s own native language and even when the individual had extensive experience with transliteration systems. The experimental results also supported these findings: participants had better results and satisfaction when looking for information written in English than when searching for transliterated information written in their native language. Implications for future research suggests a need to investigate user preferences for translation vs. transliteration of bibliographic information. This study proposes consideration of using English translation as a parallel link with CJK Romanization for bibliographic information.

  • This study was to suggest the creation of hybrid bibliographic records in complicated bibliographic environment applying both AACR2 and RDA for uniform display and correct search. The literature reviews and case studies were used as the research methods. In case studies, Kent State University, University of Houston as the libraries, and Backstage Library Works as algorithm converting to hybrid records were surveyed. For creating the hybrid records, it was needed to differentiate hybrid records and born RDA records, to keep the data that appeared in 250 tag without spelling out edition data, to maintain 260 tag instead of converting 260 tag to 264 tag, and last to design mapping table for converting GMD to CMC. This study would suggest uniform display and search through hybridization of bibliographic records of foreign resources.

  • As the improvement of digital technologies increases the use of images from various fields, the domain of image retrieval has evolved and become a growing topic of research in the Library and Information Science field. The purpose of this study is to identify the knowledge structure of the image retrieval domain by using the author co-citation analysis and author bibliographic coupling as analytical tools in order to understand the domain's past and present. The data set for this study is 245 articles with 8,031 cited articles in the field of image retrieval from 1998 to 2013, from the Web of Science citation database. According to the results of author co-citation analysis for the past of the image retrieval domain, our findings demonstrate that the intellectual structure of image retrieval in the LIS field consists of predominantly user-oriented approaches, but also includes some areas influenced by the CBIR area. More specifically, the user-oriented approach contains six specific areas which include image needs, information seeking, image needs and search behavior, image indexing and access, indexing of image collection, and web image search. On the other hand, for CBIR approaches, it contains feature-based image indexing, shape-based indexing, and IR & CBIR. The recent trends of image retrieval based on the results from author bibliographic coupling analysis show that the domain is expanding to emerging areas of medical images, multimedia, ontology- and tag-based indexing which thus reflects a new paradigm of information environment.

  • This study aims to evaluate the quality of Bibliographic database : The Union Catalog system(UNICAT) and Korean Library Information System Network(KOLIS-NET). The seven criteria(Coverage, Accuracy, Completeness, Currentness, Consistency on the quality of data itself and easy of use, Customer Support on the quality of database service) are used to measure their quality. The purpose of this study was dignose the quality of two bibliographic database mentioned above and analyses the measured result of quality comparatively and to find out the problems of them and also to provide possible suggestion for their improvements.

  • With high interest in linked data, there are various attempts to accommodate the linked data model in cataloging process. This study intends to discuss how to adopt and make the best use of linked data based bibliographic framework in order to improve the quality of library catalogs and to enhance library services in Korean libraries. To the end, this study focuses on (1) discussion of the meaning of linked data from the library cataloging perspective, (2) tracking best practices for implementing and operating linked data among North American and Europe libraries and bibliographic networks (in detail, constructing various types of ontology, developing linked data model including BIBFRAME and OCLC linked model, and improving retrieval service and interface), and finally (3) exploring problems and the anticipated challenges to transition to the linked data model in Korea. The data for discussion were collected from literature review and case study.

  • Niklas Luhmann is a sociologist who has had a strong influence on other disciplines. Therefore, it is necessary to examine what Luhmann's theory has influenced on his subsequent researchers. This study analyzed the knowledge network of studies on Niklas Luhmann's theory by follow-up researchers. Bibliographic coupling and co-citation were used as the analysis method of knowledge network. The main results are as follows. First, the language clusters were divided into Latin American / Spanish-speaking regions, Western Europe / Anglo-American regions, Eastern / Northern Europe and other language regions through bibliographic coupling analysis. Second, from the node analysis of bibliographic coupling, It was divided into 2 main cases: where Luhmann's major works were cited; where Luhmann's minor works were cited. Third, it was found that there are the core work groups that are repeatedly cited among Luhmann's works. Fourth, 12 core works were derived from the node analysis of the co-citation network, and appeared in four groups according to themes.

An Analysis on Access Points of Children's Materials : Using "A" Online Library Catalog and "N" Children's Database in the U. S. (어린이자료의 접근점 분석 - 미국의 사례를 중심으로 -)

  • This paper reports the results of the analysis on the access points of two bibliographic databases specialized in children's materials: "A" public library's online catalog and "N" children's novel database. The analysis particularly focused on the access points that lead users to discover their own needs and on the ways users search and navigate. The findings showed that the selected bibliographic systems supported many access points that were taken from the materials as well as from other relevant information sources and that browsing and navigating with hyperlinks supported the users' 'recognition' of information through 'interactivity' between the users and the systems, 'information encountering,' and 'serendipity.' The findings of this paper have implications for librarians and systems designers who want to develop user-friendly bibliographic systems that give access to children's materials.

  • As the bibliographic environment has been evolved towards linked data and semantic web, revision of KCR5 based on RDA is also in progress in Korea. Even authorized access points play an important role in identification and linkage between resources in the evolving bibliographic environment. However, the original RDA applied by KCR5 does not provide authorized access points for all entities. Based on the analysis of the authorized access point of manifestation in RDA 2020, this research identified properties and proposed a linking structure of the authorized access point that can be applied to the revision of KCR5. An authorized access point for manifestation is an access point that considers both intellectual and physical aspects, and can be the foundation for linking and identifying actual resources. The proposed structure is expected to be a linking structure for authority record optimized to the current bibliographic environment, which can be helpful in the practical application of the authorized access point for manifestation.

  • Over sixty Korean romanization systems have introduced in the course of history since 1800, but not most of them have experienced the test of proper duration. At present two major systems are introduced and focused in the bibliographic fields : Mccune-Reischauer system and Ministry of Culture & Tourism system(2000). Few libraries nay be driven to the new romanization schemes, however library users require a practical and easy-to-use Korean romanization system for searching the Korean items. From the view of bibliographic control for Korean information resources, the advantage and disadvantages for converting romanization systems have been shown as the result of the research.

  • With the rapid and broad changes of information ecology, the environment within which cataloging principles and standards operate has changed dramatically. As a result, IFLA study groups developed Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records(FRBR) model which is a conceptual model for bibliographic universe. This study intends to make a comprehensive inquiry about historical meanings and functional features of FRBR model. To the end, a comprehensive literature survey and analysis was conducted to introduce how hot and serious the discussion on this model in library cataloging. In conclusion, this study made several suggestions on the role of academic and library world (or applications of this model in Korea Library circumstance.
