Many highway bridges in Korea need seismic retrofit because only one decade has passed since the seismic design criteria was introduced. In this experimental study, the effectiveness of base isolation bearings was discussed for the seismic retrofit of the highway bridges. Four real scale RC pier specimens were constructed for the test. These RC piers didn't have seismic details. Except for one RC pier for the pilot test, three types of bearings such as Pot bearing, Rubber bearing (RB), Lead-rubber bearing (LRB) were applied to the other RC piers respectively. The RC pier with Pot bearing means current state of the prototype bridge that is not retrofitted seismically. And two RC piers with RB or LRB mean assumed states of the prototype bridge that are retrofitted seismically. To simulate dynamic behavior of these RC piers under earthquake loads, Pseudo-dynamic test method was used.
Restorative effect of forest settings is an emerging issue in the field of forestry. It is also the central question facing those currently engaged in the psychotherapeutic interventions is which treatments work. This study was performed to investigate the efficacy of forest experience on alcoholics' depression. Among 531 participants in forest healing camps, 47 alcoholics who participated all three sessions of the camps were selected for this study. Using pre-test and post-test group design with Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), mean changes in alcoholics' depression by completion of the camp was measured. The result of this study indicated that the 3-session of forest camp played significant role in reducing participants depression levels (i.e., positive changes in depression scores).
The past Korean Bridge Design Specifications have no limitation on the amount of lap splices of longitudinal bars in the plastic hinge zone of piers. A majority of bridge piers which have been non-seismically designed might have some lap splices in plastic hinge zone. Also a number of those piers in Korea have a low aspect ratio(height/section area). So, some problems such as low ductility behavior may happen. In this study, the real pier which was non-seismically designed and has a low aspect ratio was selected for the quasi-static tests. Two groups of full scaled RC pier models of which aspect ratios are about 2.26 and about 2.67 were fabricated. And then, quasi-static tests according to the drift level history method were implemented. From the test results, the failure of these test specimens have been shown in the complex shear-flexural or shear modes. The low aspect ratio and the lap splice have largely influenced on the seismic performance of bridge piers.
In this study, performance level evaluation tests have been actually performed on laminated rubber seismic isolation bearings (LRB) made in Korea. To provide basic data for setting up fabrication criteria and performance evaluation criteria three real scale LRB were tested and the test results were analysised. Accordingly, a large capacity test device has been designed and manufactured to implement the tests. The device selected for evaluation is a circular LRB actually applied in bridges. Evaluation tests were conducted using full-scale LRB with diameter of 851mm in the rubber part and total height of 215mm of which the effective horizontal stiffness and equivalent damping ratio have been measured during the experiments.
This study was to investigate the level of fatigue and its associated variables in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus(SLE) in Korea. From March to June, 2001, 100 patients, registered at one university hospital rheumatology clinic in Seoul, were accepted as subjects for this study. The sampling method was adopted a non-probability, purposive technique. The instruments used for this study were The Multidimensional Assessment Fatigue scale developed by Tack and Beck Depression Instrument develped by Beck. The collected data were analyzed by SAS program using t-test, ANOVA with Scheffe-test, Pearson correlation coefficients and stepwise multiple regression. The results were as follows: 1. Total scores of fatigue of the subjects averaged $24.46(\pm10.85)$, degree of fatigue was $5.08(\pm2.29)$, and influence of fatigue was $3.52(\pm2.12)$. 2. Regarding characteristics, more depressive(p=.0001) and more painfuI(p=.0122) patients revealed more fatigue. Also, the subjects with spouse(p=.0337) and having poor quality of sleep(p=.0445) revealed more fatigue. 3. The subjects' total fatigue score, depression, pain and age was correlated positively(r=.53; r=.48; r=.24), and total fatigue score, and exercise time, quality of sleep was correlated negatively(r=-.45; r=-.21). 4. The main influencing factors on the fatigue were depression$(52.92\%)$ and quality of sleep $(8.10\%)$. These two main variables made it possible to explain $61.02\%$ of the varience in fatigue. In conclusion, this study revealed depression and quality of sleep is an important factor that can improve quality of life in patients with SLE. It is recommended that nursing intervention for SLE patients would be focused to decrease depression and to enhance quality of sleep.

Background: To investigate the neurobiological evidence supporting the adaptogenic effects of Korean Red Ginseng in reducing the harmful consequences of stress using a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. Method: Sixty-three subjects with high stress levels were randomized to receive an orally administered, double-blind, 6-week treatment with Korean Red Ginseng (n = 32) or placebo (n = 31). All participants underwent a comprehensive psychological evaluation using Beck Depression Inventory and Stress Response Inventory, cognitive evaluation using the continuous performance test, biological evaluation by measuring blood levels of lipids, catecholamines, inflammation markers, and heart rate variability at baseline and after 6 weeks. Results: At baseline, both groups showed no significant differences in age, sex, years of education, Beck Depression Inventory, and Stress Response Inventory. After 6 weeks, triglyceride levels were significantly increased within the normal limit in the Korean Red Ginseng group (F = 4.11, p = 0.048), and the epinephrine level was decreased in this group (F = 4,35, p = 0.043). The triglyceride increase was significantly associated with epinephrine decrease (B = 0.087, p = 0.041), suggesting that Korean Red Ginseng may stabilize the sympathetic nervous system. In addition, we detected a significant group by time effect in the visually controlled continuous performance test, suggesting positive effects of Korean Red Ginseng on cognition. Conclusion: Korean Red Ginseng might help to stabilize the sympathetic nervous system and improve cognition in individuals with high stress.
Purpose : Transcranial direct current stimulation is noninvasive method of cerebral cortical stimulation applied as an intervention to facilitate recovery in stroke patients. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of transcranial direct current stimulation on depression and anxiety in stroke patients with the aim to finding a reliable method to reduce depression and anxiety in stroke patients. Methods : This study was conducted at A hospital located in D city from December 2022 to February 2023. Patients diagnosed with stroke were selected according to predefined study criteria and divided into two groups. 9 patients in experimental group underwent transcranial direct current stimulation and traditional occupational therapy, while 9 patients in the control group underwent sham transcranial direct current stimulation and traditional occupational therapy for 20 min per session 3 times per week for a total of 8 weeks. Beck depression inventory (BDI) and Beck anxiety inventory (BAI) were used to evaluate depression and anxiety in the patients before and after intervention. Wilcoxon signed rank test was used to compare differences before to after intervention. Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare the two groups. Differences with p<.05 were considered statistically significant. Results : First, both the experimental and control groups presented significant statistical difference before and after intervention on depression (p<.01). Comparison of two groups after intervention showed significant statistical difference in depression (p<.05). Second, the groups presented significant statistical difference before and after intervention on anxiety (p<.01). After intervention, the two groups showed significant statistical difference in anxiety (p<.05). Conclusion : Results of the present study demonstrated the effects of transcranial direct current stimulation on depression and anxiety in stroke patients, suggesting it may be a useful method of rehabilitation in this patient population; as such, further studies are warranted.
Objectives: To perform correlation analysis between the Core Seven Emotions Inventory-Short Form (CSEI-s), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), upper gastrointestinal symptoms, and gastroscopic findings and to compare emotional characteristics with upper gastrointestinal endoscopic findings. Methods: In this study, medical records of 38 participants who visited the hospital for examination purposes or complained upper gastrointestinal symptoms and completed the CSEI-s, BAI, BDI, and Questionnaire for upper gastrointestinal symptoms were analyzed using SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) version 25.0. Frequency Analysis, Descriptive Analysis, Independent t-test, Mann-Whitney's U-test, and Correlation analysis were performed. Results: The upper gastrointestinal symptom group showed higher levels of anger, sorrow, depression, and anxiety than the asymptomatic group. On gastroscopy, the normal group had higher levels of Joy than the abnormal group. The reflux esophagitis group showed higher levels of thought, depression, sorrow, and anxiety than the non-reflux esophagitis group. Joy showed a negative correlation with BDI score. However, anger, depression, sorrow, BAI, and BDI score showed positive correlations. Conclusions: Results of this study suggest that CSEI-s can be used to treat patients with upper gastrointestinal symptoms and reflux esophagitis.
The purpose of this study is to identify parental stress of working mothers with young children and to fine its rented variables. subjects were consisted of 108 working mothers who had children from 3 to 6 ages. The objective of this research was to examine the effects of lumber stabilization exercise and a general physiotherapy program for caregivers with chronic low back pain. Sixteen people participated in this study and were randomly assigned to two groups for either lumbar stabilization exercise or for general physiotherapy, respectively. The experiment was performed for eight weeks. To examine the general as well as the medical characteristics of the participants, the following measurements were used: Visual Analogue Scale (VAS); Oswestry Disability Index (ODI); Back Performance Scale (BPS); Roland - Morris Disability Questionnaire (RMDQ); and Beck Depression Index (BDI). To compare the general and medical characteristics of the participants in the two groups, an independent t test were used. During the experiment, a paired t test was conducted to determine whether there was a significant difference in the values of VAS, ODI, BPS, RMDQ, and BDI before and after the experiment. To examine the difference in the VAS, ODI, BPS, RMDQ, and BDI values in the two groups, ANCOVA was used with pre test values as a covariate. According to the test results, in the lumbar stabilization exercise group, the VAS, ODI, BPS, RMDQ, and BDI values showed a statistically significant difference before and after the test (p<.05). In comparison, in the general physiotherapy program group, only the ODI and BPS values showed a statistically significant level of improvement. Regarding the degree of improvement, participants in the lumbar stabilization exercise group showed statistically significant progress compared to those in the general physiotherapy group. In summary, lumbar stabilization exercise is regarded as more effective than general physiotherapy for treating caregivers with chronic low back pain. In future studies, it will be useful to expand the research and to examine the long term effects of lumbar stabilization exercise on workers.
