  • To realize 10-Gbit/s optical transmission systems, we designed and fabricated a limiting amplifier with extremely high operation frequencies over 10-GHz using AlGaAs/GaAs heterojunction bipolar transistors (HBTs), and investigated their performances. Circuit design and simulation were performed using SPICE and LABRA. A discrete AlGaAs/GaAs HBT with the emitter area of 1.5${\times}$10$\mu\textrm{m}$$^2$, used for the circuit fabrication, exhibited the cutoff frequency of 63GHz and maximum oscillation frequency of 50GHz. After fabrication of MMICs, we observed the very wide bandwidth of DC∼15GHz for a limiting amplifier from the on-wafer measurement. Ceramic-packaged limiting amplifier showed the excellent eye opening, the output voltage swing of 750mV\ulcorner, and the rise/fall time of 40ps, measured at the data rates of 10-Gbit/s.

  • In this paper, a dynamic TCP-friendly rate control (TFRC) is proposed to adjust the coding rates according to the channel characteristics of the wireless-to-wired network consisting of wireless first-hop channel. To avoid the throughput degradation of multimedia flows traveling through wireless lint the proposed rate control system employs a new wireless loss differentiation algorithm (LDA) using packet loss statistics. This method can produce the TCP-friendly rates while sharing the backbone bandwidth with TCP flows over the wireless-to-wired network. Experimental results show that the proposed rate control system can eliminate the effect of wireless losses in flow control of TFRC and substantially reduce the abrupt quality degradation of the video streaming caused by the unreliable wireless link status.

  • In this paper, a compact and broadband PIFA(Planar Inverted F Antenna) which has an additive short-circuit plate along the patch length was designed. For more compact PIFA short-circuit Plate along the patch width is reduced and an additive short-circuit plate along the patch length is used to broaden the bandwidth. The effect of an additive-short-circuit plate along the patch length was verified in single band PIFA and also verified in dual-band PIFA. The commercial software, IE3D, was used to design a PIFA and its performance was verified by comparing simulated results with measurement results.

  • For broadband high-data-rate power line communication with the allocated frequency bandwidth from 2 to 30 MHz on medium voltage (MV) distribution power lines, a signal coupling unit is developed. The coupling unit is composed of a coupling capacitor for coupling communication signal, a drain coil, and an impedance matching part. The coupling capacitor made of ceramic capacitor is designed for transmission property of better than 1 dB in the frequency range. The drain coil is used for preventing low frequency high voltage from junction of medium voltage power line in case that a coupling capacitor is not working properly any more. Also, using ferrite core, a novel broadband impedance matching transformer is developed. A complete coupling unit with a coupling capacitor, a drain coil, and a matching transformer is housed by polymer for good isolation and distinguishing from high voltage electric facilities. Each is fabricated and its frequency behavior is tested. Finally, complete signal couplers are equipped in a MV PLC test bed and their performance are measured. The measurement shows that the coupling capacitor works excellently.

  • An X-band push-push VCO for low cost applications is proposed. The designed push-push oscillator achieves a wide tuning range in the X-band by the collector bias tuning instead of extra varactor diodes. The measurement shows a wide tuning bandwidth of $900\;\cal{MHz}\;from\;10.9\;\cal{GHz}\;to\;11.8\;\cal{GHz}$ with a drain bias voltage varying from 4 to 9 V, excellent fudamental suppression of $-30\;\cal{dBc}$ and good phase noise of $-115\;\cal{dBc/Hz}\;@\;1\;\cal{MHz}$ offset.

  • This paper designed a very low profle, light and broadband internal antenna for operating at PCS, IMT-2000 and Wibro bands. The proposed antenna can be reduced the size by using shorting-pin and a broadband characteristic is obtained by using slit. It is optimized by using the CST Microwave Studio commercial software based on the FIA(Finite Integration Algorithm) and PBA(Perfect Boundary Approximation) and then fabricated and measured. As a result of measurement, the bandwidth(VSWR<2.5) is $40.8\;\%$ at $1.934\;\cal{GHz}$ and the size of antenna is 3$30\;\cal{mm}\times10\;\cal{mm}\times0.2\;\cal{mm}$.

  • In this paper, Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) method is used to analyze characteristics of the electromagnetically coupled broadband microstrip antenna, and to optimize the antenna parameters. By using short tuning stub in feedline, electromagnetically coupled microstrip antenna shows broadband (approximatcly equal 13%) characteristics, and the characteristics are varied as a function of length, width, and position of the tuning stub. Operating frequency, return loss, VSWR and input impedance are calculated by Fourier transforming the time domain results. Measurement data from fabricated electromagnetically coupled microstrip antenna are compared with FDTD results and are shown to be in good agreement. After optimization of the parameters, maximum bandwidth of about 15% is achieved.

  • For the testing of nonlinear power amplifiers, this paper suggests an approach to design optimized multisine signals that could be substituted for the original modulated signal. In the design of multisines, complex coefficients should be determined to mimic the target signal as much as possible, but very few methods have been adopted as general solutions to the coefficients. Furthermore, no solid method for the phase of coefficients has been proven to show the best resemblance to the original. Therefore, in order to determine the phase of multisine coefficients, a time-domain nonlinear optimization method is suggested. A frequency-domain-method based on the spectral response of the target signal is also suggested for the magnitude of the coefficients. For the verification, multisine signals are designed to emulate the LTE downlink signal of 10 MHz bandwidth and are used to test a nonlinear amplifier at 1.9 GHz. The suggested phase-optimized multisine had a lower normalized error by 0.163 dB when N = 100, and the measurement results showed that the suggested multisine achieved more accurate adjacent-channel leakage ratio (ACLR) estimation by as much as 12 dB compared to that of the conventional iterative method.

  • This paper demonstrates the development of optical temperature sensor based on the etched planar waveguide Bragg grating. Topics include design and fabrication of the etched planar waveguide Bragg grating, investigation of the grating reflection characteristics, and temperature measurement capabilities. The typical bandwidth and reflectivity of the surface etched grating has been ~0.2nm and ~7%, respectively, at a wavelength of ~1552nm. The temperature-induced wavelength change of the optical sensor is found to be slightly non-linear over ~20$0^{\circ}C$ temperature range. Theoretical models for the grating response of the sensor based on waveguide and plate deformation theories agree with experiments to within acceptable tolerance.

  • In this paper, a coil typed electromagnetic band gap (EBG) structure to be inserted in the printed circuit board (PCB) inner layer in order to stabilize the PCB power line is proposed and implemented for global-navigation satellite service (GNSS) with the bandwidth from 1.55GHz to 1.81GHz. From the measurement result of the PCB board including EBG structure, the insertion loss(S21) was measured below about -50dB. From these results, it is expected that the stabilization of power delivery network (PDN) structure in the PCB circuit design should be improved and the preparation to EMI will be effective.
