Need and Significance of STS Education at the University Level

  • The study purported to develop STS education course material at the university level in order to enhance science literacy and understanding of the relationships among science, technology and society. A developed STS course was provided to 265 freshmen and sophomore students, majoring in the Humanities and the Social Sciences, the Natural Sciences and Engineering, and Fine Arts. Students participated in the survey examining changes in students' attitudes toward and perspectives on STS before and after the implementation. Ten questionnaires were selected from VOSTS for the survey. One additional questionnaire asked the students to elaborate their opinions on the need for a STS education course. The responses to the survey were analyzed according to types of questions and students' majors. As result, the developed STS course significantly increased students' science literacy. Among the participants, 97.7% responded that there is a need for STS education and provided reasons for such need. These results imply that there is a definite need for a STS class at the university level. According to the analyses of responses, there were different responses depending on the students' major. These differences imply that the major, academic background, level of interest in science, and knowledge of science of the students affect their perceptions on identifying the need for a STS education course.

Applying Theory of Planned Behavior to Examine Users' Intention to Adopt Broadband Internet in Lower-Middle Income Countries' Rural Areas: A Case of Tanzania

  • Broadband Internet has proven to be vital for economic growth in developed countries. Developing countries have implemented several initiatives to increase their broadband access. However, its full potential can only be realized through adoption and use. With lower-middle-income countries accounting for the majority of the world's unconnected population, this study employs the theory of planned behavior (TPB) to investigate users' intentions to adopt broadband. Rural Tanzania was chosen as a case study. A cross-sectional study was conducted over three weeks, using 155 people from seven villages with the lowest broadband adoption rates. Non-probability voluntary response sampling was used to recruit the participants. Using the TPB constructs: attitude toward behavior (ATB), subjective norms (SN), and perceived behavioral control (PBC), ordinal regression analysis was employed to predict intention. Descriptive statistical analysis yielded mean scores (standard deviation) as 3.59 (0.46) for ATB, 3.34 (0.40) for SN, 3.75 (0.29) for PBC, and 4.12 (0.66) for intention. The model adequately described the data based on a comparison of the model with predictors and the null model, which revealed a substantial improvement in fit (p<0.05). Moreover, the predictors accounted for 50.3% of the variation in the intention to use broadband Internet, demonstrating the predictive power of the TPB constructs. Furthermore, the TPB constructs were all significant positive predictors of intention: ATB (β=1.938, p<0.05), SN (β=2.144, p<0.05), and PBC (β=1.437, p=0.013). The findings of this study provide insight into how behavioral factors influence the likelihood of individuals adopting broadband Internet and could guide interventions through policies meant to promote broadband adoption.

지역주민 태도에 의한 수변공간 개발 형태 분석 - 여주시를 중심으로 - (An Analysis of Waterfront Development Type based on Residents' Attitudes - Focused on Yeoju-Si -)

  • 최근 몇 년간 수변공간 개발에 대한 관심이 증가하면서 지속가능한 지역균형 발전을 목표로 하는 지역개발 정책 및 사업이 증가하였다. 이러한 과정에서 생활환경 변화에 대한 지역문제가 발생하게 되었고, 지역주민태도를 반영한 개발계획의 중요성이 부각되었다. 본 연구에서는 새로 조성된 수변공간에 대하여 허용 가능한 개발형태 분석 및 향후 개발목표를 설정하기 위해, 사회교환이론을 바탕으로 지역주민 태도를 고려하여 LAC 시스템의 첫 번째 단계에 대한 분석을 실시하였다. 이를 위해 여주시 지역주민 240명을 대상으로 수변공간 개발에 대한 주민태도, 허용 가능한 수변공간 개발형태, 주민특성을 설문하였다. 설문한 데이터에 대한 기술통계분석, 요인분석을 실시한 뒤, 수변공간 개발에 대한 주민태도에 따른 허용 가능한 개발 형태를 알아보기 위해 다중회귀분석을 실시하였다. 다음으로 거주특성과 수변공간 개발에 대한 주민태도와의 차이를 알아보기 위해 기술통계분석, 요인분석, T-test, 일원분산분석(one-way ANOVA)를 실시하였다. 그 결과, 여주시 지역주민들이 허용하는 수변공간 개발 형태는 자연교육중심 개발 형태라는 것을 확인할 수 있었으며, 거주지역에 따라 수변공간 개발에 대한 형태에 차이가 나타나는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 본 연구의 결과를 통해 수변공간의 개발 및 관리 목적을 설정하고, LAC 후속단계인 휴양자원 등급화의 적용범위에 대한 기준을 마련할 수 있었다.

우리나라 지질자원분야 연구예산 지원에 관한 분석연구 (An Analysis on Research Funding of Geosciences in Korea)

  • This study analyzed trends in geoscientific research funding provided by the Korea Science and Engineering Foundation (KOSEF) and examined strategies to promote geoscientific research. The strengths of geoscientific research in South Korea include the excellent academic quality of researchers, established research infrastructure, and inter-disciplinary research. Weaknesses include insufficient leadership in related societies and institutes, insufficient research productivity, and the exclusion of the field from nationally supported large-scale research projects. Opportunities for expanded research include environmental issues, the sustainable use of natural resources, the promotion of international research cooperation, and the initiation of national efforts to find solutions for regional problems. However, growth in the geosciences is threatened by prioritized investment in fields such as biotechnology, nanoscience, and information technology, a dismissive attitude toward the growth of basic sciences, and an increased demand for projects with visible economic and societal impacts. In terms of funding, group-based programs receive more support than individual-based programs. Between 1978 and 2006, KOSEF invested 1,744 billion won ($1.873 billion US) in a total of 46,748 basic research projects. Of this amount, 62.1 billion won ($66.7 million US) was allocated to 1,901 projects in the geosciences, which was roughly 2.6-10.6% of the money available in a given year. These funds were used to support research and development, the development and maintenance of necessary infrastructure, and the education and training of geoscientists.

물리치료학과 학생들의 임상실습 중 대인관계에 대한 연구 (A Study on Interpersonal Relations on Clinical Practice of Physical Therapist Students)

  • The purpose of this study was to provide information for making positive interpersonal relations by understanding the degree of difficulties of interpersonal relations that physical therapist students may have on clinical practice. The survey results of 175 students who completed clinical practice for the first term of 2003. The survey was conducted through mail or e-mail between July 20 and August 20, 2003. The data were analyzed frequency, percentage, t-test, and one-way ANOVA using the SPSS/PC Ver. 10.0 (${\alpha}=0.05$). The results were as follows; 1. The mean score for the level of points interpersonal relations was 41.06 points in full 80 points. Therefore most students had a little problem on interpersonal relations. 2. More difficulties of interpersonal relations were felt by students in the following order; clinical instructors, patients, other students, and other department staffs in the hospital. 3. Between students and clinical physical therapist in the hospital, most students were satisfied with a instructor's attitude toward there (61.1%). 4. Between students and other department staffs in the hospital, most students were felt convenient when faced with other staffs(61.8%). 5. Between students and patients in the hospital, most students didn't uncomfortable when they made a rapport(69.2%). 6. Between students and other college students, most students were didn't inconvenient when they were practicing together(69.8%). 7. The students with higher marks in major felt more difficulties for forming personal relations with other department staffs in hospital, patient, and other students(p<0.05). 8. The students showed more felt inconveniences over 8 weeks practicing than below 7 weeks itperiods of clinical practice(p<0.05). 9. The number of practice place were significantly difference according to relation of patients, other college students(p<0.05). More less practice place were made difficult of interpersonal relations. The further studies would be made in viewpoints to clinical instructors, patients, students, others department staffs in the hospital so that we could compare our results with theirs.

일학습병행 공동훈련센터 전담인력 조직성과 진단 및 분석 (Analysis of Organizational Performance of Employees of the Work-Learning Dual System Training Center)

  • 기존의 일학습병행 사업 성과 분석은 주로 거시적 차원에서 제도 자체의 효과성을 진단하는 방향으로 전개되어 왔다. 본 연구에서는 일학습병행의 운영 주체 관점에서 공동훈련센터 전담인력의 조직성과에 초점을 둔 진단조사를 시행하고 그 결과를 분석하여 공동훈련센터 및 전담인력을 둘러싸고 산재하는 조직관리상의 다양한 이슈들을 확인하였다. 연구결과 특히 일학습병행 유형과 전담인력 고용형태에 따라 전담인력이 공동훈련센터를 바라보는 인식 및 태도가 차이남을 확인하였다. 일학습병행 유형 중에서는 전반적으로 IPP형 일학습병행에서 전담인력의 조직성과가 낮게 나타난 반면, 산학일체형 도제학교의 경우 상대적으로 높게 나타났다. 고용형태는 특히 프로젝트 계약직에 대한 제도적 개선의 필요성이 도출되었다.

  • Koreans have emphasized education as the primary means to reconstruct our country means to reconstruct our country after two catastrophic events-the Japanese occupation and the Korean War(1950-1953). A Strong belief- in education coupled with sheer deter-mination spurred the period of industrial and eeonomic development that started in the early 1970-'s. The "can-do" attitude of the general public was matched and aided by small S & T communities. Scientists and engineers provided the neeessary expertise to manufacture goods and process the many raw materials imported from overseas. After nearly three decades of reconst-ructing our completely devastated country, Korea has become a modern, cosmo-politan, fast-paced and dynamic country. In order to further increaser our manufac- turing capabilities and double the per-capita income by the beginning of the 21st century, we must improve productivitiy and encourage creatitivity in all sectors of our country. The S & T community's efforts in research and development. education, and interna-tional cooperation will be invaluable in determining our direction and reaching these goals. The general public is eager to peacefully unite our foreign powers since 1945. Toward that end. members of the S & T community are willing to coope-rate with our north Korean counterparts in all areas of S & T with the exception of defense related endeavors. Establi-shing scientific ties with north Korea will result in mutual economic benefit and greater regional stability in East Asia. In particular. scientists and manu-facturers in each province are eager to initiate cordial and professional relation-ships with north Korea in the hopes of securing these benefits. The Korean Federation of Science and Technology Societies(KOFST) has played an important role both in developing S & T policies, and in gostering the frowty of S & T societies. A non-governmental umbrella organization composed of over 251 professional societies, KOFST facili-tates the transfer of research outcomes and technology from research institutions to the various industries. KOFST also seeks to increase cooperation between the countries of the Pacific Rim. As evidence of that, we have pursued joint research and industrial ventures with China. Established projects include those on environmental conditions in the Yellow Sea, and improvement of aircraft manufacturing, telecommunica-tion equipment, and agricultural produ-cts. Increased cooperation between the Pacific Rim countries, particularly in S & T, would foster social and economic development for the region as a whole.

융합인재교육을 적용한 초등수학 수업자료 개발 연구 (A Study on Development of the Instructional Materials for Elementary School Mathematics Based on STEAM Education)

  • 오늘날 지식정보 기반 사회에서 제공되는 지식은 단일한 교과의 지식이 아니라 교과를 구분하기 힘든 통합된 형태로 나타나고 있다. 이러한 사회에서 문제해결력을 갖추기 위해서는 통합된 형태의 지식을 우선적으로 습득하고, 이를 과학적 상상이나 예술적 감성과 결합시킬 수 있는 융합적인 사고가 요구된다. 융합인재교육(STEAM)은 이러한 문제해결력과 융합적 사고를 신장시키기 위한 교육 방안의 하나로 제시되고 있다. 본 연구는 초등학교 수학과 6학년 교과서를 중심으로 수학수업에 적용할 수 있는 융합인재교육 수업자료를 개발하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 3단원 '각기둥과 각뿔' 수업에서는 '스파게티 프로젝트', '페이퍼 크래프트' 자료를, 4단원 '여러 가지 입체도형'에서는 'EDUCUBE' 자료를, 그리고 6단원 '비율 그래프'에서는 '나만의 팔찌 만들기' 수업자료를 개발하였다. 또한 이렇게 개발된 자료들을 실제 수업에 적용하였으며, 그 결과 특히 학생들의 수학적 태도에 있어서 긍정적인 변화를 관찰할 수 있었다. 융합인재교육을 적용한 수학수업 결과 학생들의 수업태도 및 수업에 대한 흥미가 긍정적이었으며, 수학 교과에 대한 인식이 개선된 것으로 나타났다. 이에 본 연구는 융합인재교육을 적용한 초등수학 수업자료의 개발이 보다 다양한 영역과의 융합을 통해 다양한 학년과 내용 영역에서 전개될 필요가 있음을 제안하고 있다.

대학생의 노인부양과 Care의 사회화에 대한 인식 (University Students' Recognition of Family Support and Care's Socialization in the Elderly)

  • This study was conducted to identify college students' supportive attitude toward the elderly and their awareness of the socialization of care for the elderly, since they will have the responsibility for and the support of the aged society in the near future. This study was also conducted to analyze the factors which affect the socialization of elderly care, and to contribute to building a care system which promotes ahealthy and happy lifestyle for the elderly. After conducting a survey of 1,100 students from13 universities around the entire country, I have analyzed 1,089 data forms, and omitted 11 data entries which had errors or were not answered. 1. Those surveyed are 1,089 students from 13 universities around the entire country. Regional distributions are as follows : 263 students from 4 universities in Daegu and Kyongsangbuk Do(24.2%), 291 students from 3 universities in Busan and Kyongsangnam Do(26.7%), 272 students from 2 universities in Jeolla Do(25.0%), 263 students from 4 universities in Seoul and Gyeonggi Do. Males are 51.7% and females are 48.3% of these students. 2. Instrumental supportive sense level is high in men and emotional supportive sense level is higher in women. Also emotional supportive sense is higher in groups of those having more family members and coming from agricultural regions. 3. The sense of living with aged parents is higher in those living with grandparents than those living separate. The sense of living with sons and daughters after aging is stronger in the students from the Science and Engineering Departments than in the Social and Human Sciences Departments; also higher for men than women. 4. Recognition of elderly care socialization is higher in those from Social and Human Sciences Departments than from Science and Engineering Departments; higher in the case of upper classmenand aged groups, groups having fewer family members than more family members, and in the case of living separated from grandparents. 5. The factors affecting the sense of living with grandparents were family cohesion and instrumental supportive sense. The factors affecting the sense of elderly care socialization were family cohesion, instrumental supportive sense, and emotional supportive sense. From the results it is concluded that to insure a healthy and happy lifestyle for aged people, elderly care socialization offered by society and the country must provide desirable, appropriate care services based on the centralized support system of the family. In order to do this, we propose that elderly care needs inter-family and inter-generational fusion programs to improve family cohesion and care recognition. Also, elderly care is in urgent need to build a strong Family and Health Welfare System for care socialization.

도시 생태공원 이용자 특성 연구 - 길동생태공원, 여의도샛강생태공원을 사례로 - (The Visitors Characteristics of Urban Ecological Park - The Cases of Gildong Ecological Park, Yeouido Tributary Ecological Park -)

  • 생태공원은 자연 자원의 지속 가능한 이용을 활성화하고 대상지를 기반으로 환경 교육을 위한 장소로서 활용될 수 있다. 그러나 생태공원에서 운영되는 생태 체험 프로그램은 이용자들이 직접 체험하고 관찰하는 방식의 교육으로 이용자들이 요구하는 여가편익을 반영하여야 하지만, 이용자들을 대상으로 생태공원에 대한 여가편익을 심층적으로 고찰한 연구는 미비한 실정이다. 이에 본 연구에서는 생태공원을 방문하는 이용자들의 환경태도, 여가편익, 만족도 간의 영향관계를 파악하고자 하였다. 실증적 분석을 위해 서울시에 위치한 길동생태공원, 여의도 샛강 생태공원의 이용자를 대상으로 총 282부의 유효한 설문지를 수집하였다. 통계적 분석결과, 생태공원을 방문하는 이용자들의 환경에 대한 태도가 긍정적일수록 이용자들의 생태공원 방문시 자연친화적 경험에 대한 교육과 전문적인 지식 확대에 대한 여가편익에 높은 기대를 하고 방문하는 것으로 나타났다. 생태공원을 통해 이용자들이 원하는 여가편익이 방문하기 전 기대와 방문 후 여가편익의 차이 분석을 실시한 결과, 이용자들이 생태공원을 방문할 가치가 있었다고 느꼈으나, 교육적인 측면의 여가편익에서는 방문 전 기대보다 불충분한 만족을 느끼고 있음을 나타냈다. 또한, 방문 후 여가편익은 생태공원 전체 만족도에 긍정적인 영향을 주고, 긍정적인 환경에 대한 태도는 전체 방문만족도에 영향을 미치지 못하는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 현재 우리나라의 생태공원이 일반 공원과 차이를 보이지 않고, 공원을 방문하는 이용자들도 차이를 느끼지 못하기 때문이라 판단된다. 이러한 연구결과는 향후 생태공원 이용자들이 요구하는 여가편익인 자연친화적 경험과 생태교육의 다양성을 중심으로의 일반공원과의 차별적인 관리가 필요하다.
