A peroxynitrite is formed when superoxide and nitric oxide exist at near eqimolar ratio in biological systems. Although not a free radical by chemical nature, peroxynitrite is a powerful oxidant having a wide array of tissue damaging effects ranging from lipid oxidation and inactivation of enzymes and ion channels through protein oxidation and nitration to inhibition of mitochondrial respiration. During our search for new antioxidizing components from natural resources, twenty salt marsh plants were screened for their ONOO and DPPH radical scavenging activities. Among them, methanol extract of Rosa rugosa, lxeris tamagawaensis, Erigeron annus, Tetragonia tetragonoides, Imperata cylindrica, and Suaeda japonica inhibited more than 85% of peroxynitrite produced by 3-morpholinsydnonimine (SIN-1) at a concentration of 5 $\mu\textrm{g}$/$m\ell$. In addition, Rosa rugosa, Artemisia capillaris, Erigeron annus and Ixeris tamagawaensis showed significant scavenging effect against DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical).

BACKGROUND: Herbal extracts have been screened for their inhibitory effect of seed germination and root development on weeds, but there is a scarcity of reports for crop growth regulation. The objective of this research was to develop a growth inhibitor on Brassica campestris, and its effective extraction method from herbal medicine extract. METHODS AND RESULTS: Eighty four herbal medicine extracts were tested for their plant growth inhibition activity on B. campestris. The alcohol extracts of Artemisia annua, Cinnamomum cassia, and Mentha arvensis inhibited over 30% of germination and the extract of A. annua, and C. cassia inhibited over 70% of radicle growth at 0.1 % w/w treatment. The partially purified extracts of A. annua, and C. cassia with dichloromethane and hexane showed stronger radicle growth inhibition than the crude extracts on B. campestris. The diethyl ether extract of A. annua showed a similar 50% radicle growth inhibition ($RI_{50}$ = 45 mg/L) to its partially purified extract with dichloromethane or hexane, but the diethyl ether extract of C. cassia showed a worse $RI_{50}$ than the purified extract. CONCLUSION: The alcohol extracts of A. annua, and C. cassia showed potent radicle growth inhibition properties on B. campestris. Diethyl ether proved to be a good solvent for simple extraction from A. annua.

This study was conducted to identify plant growth promoting effects of native plant resources and medicinal plants. 65 kinds of plant extracts from 64 species were evaluated based on two rice(Oryza sativa) seedling bioassays for gibberellins and gibberellin-like substances. 12 extracts of Artemisia princeps stem and leaf, Cirsium japonicum var. maackii whole plant, Rhododendron mucronulatum branch and leaf, Phragmites communis stem, Coix lacryma-jobi var. mayuen whole plant, Lespedeza bicolor branch and leaf, Hydrangea serrata f. acuminata whole plant, Phlomis umbrosa whole plant, Glycyrrhiza uralensis Rhizome, G. uralensis stem and leaf, Angelica gigas root, and Cnidium officinale rhizome showed growth promotion of rice seedlings. Our results suggested that the parts of these plants could be the potential sources as farm-made liquid fertilizers for plant growth promotion.
The mirid bug damages on grapevine were observed not only on young shoot and leaves (decoloration, deforming, and perforation) but also on fruits (black spot, corky scar, and young fruit shattering). Among 159 fields surveyed throughout the country, 113 fields (71%) were damaged, and the damages were relatively severer in the chief producing districts of grape vine, such as Gimpo, Anseong, Naju, Gimcheon, Buyeo, Daejeon, Yesan than other districts where grapevine yards were not concentrated. The severest shoot damages were observed in two grape vine yards of Naju (85%) and Gimpo (65%) in 1999. Three species of virid bugs were recognized on grape vine tree, Apoygus spinolae (Meyer-Dur), Apolygus lucorum (Meyer-Dur), and Orthotylus (Melanotrichus) flavosparsus(Sahlberg). Among them, A. spinolae was dominant species in the number of specimens collected. A. spinolae were collected on 10 host plants including Vitis vinifera L., Prunus armeniaca var. ansu Max., and prunus serrulata var. spontanea(Max.) Wils. and etc., and A. lucorum were collected on 10 species of plants, including Artemisia iwayomogi Kitamura, Artemisia princeps var. orientalis(Pampan) Hara and etc. Both A. spinolae and A. lucorum distributed widely in Korean grapevine yards.

Nosemosis is one of the most common protozoan diseases of adult bees (Apis mellifera). Nosemosis is caused by two species of microsporidia; Nosema apis and Nosema ceranae. Nosema ceranae is potentially more dangerous because it has the ability to infect multiple cell types, and it is now the predominant microsporidian species in A. mellifera. In this study, we identified two anti-nosemosis plants, Aster scaber and Artemisia dubia, which reduced the spore development of N. ceranae in spore-infected cells. We intend to establish the anti-nosemosis activity of aqueous, ethyl acetate (EA), and butanol (BuOH) extracts of A. dubia and A. scaber. In order to determine the optimal dose, we did in vitro and in vivo toxicity for all the extracts and carried out anti-nosemosis experiments. Although all of the extracts (aqueous, EA, and BuOH) showed in vitro and in vivo anti-nosemosis activity in a dose-dependent manner, the aqueous extracts of A. dubia and A. scaber showed more potent anti-nosemosis activity than the EA and BuOH extracts. And then, we isolated five phenolic compounds [chlorogenic acid, 3,4-dicaffaeoylquinic acid (3,4-DCQA), 3,5-dicaffaeoylquinic acid (3,5-DCQA), 4,5-dicaffaeoylquinic acid (4,5-DCQA), and coumarin] from A. dubia, A. scaber, and A. dubia + A. scaber aqueous extracts and screened for their toxicities and anti-Nosema effects in both in vivo and in vitro conditions. Among these five compounds, coumarin, chlorogenic acid, and 4,5-DCQA exhibited less toxic but more potent anti-Nosema effects than the other two compounds. Especially, chlorogenic acid and coumarin showed prominent anti-Nosema activities even at the lowest concentration (10 ㎍/mL). They might have potential to be developed as alternative compounds for the control of Nosema disease.

In the present study, the protective effects of Artemisia capillaris (AC) on the DNA damage induced by $^{60}$ Co ${\gamma}$-rays were evaluated using alkaline single-cell gel electrophoresis (SCGE, comet assay) in the mouse peripheral lymphocytes and micronuclei (MN) formation test in the Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells. We also investigated the effect of AC on 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) formation in the mouse liver and thymus exposed to ${\gamma}$-ray, The tail moment and the frequency of MN, which were markers of DNA damage in the SCGE and MN formation test, were decreased in the groups treated with AC extract before exposure to 200 cGy of ${\gamma}$-ray. We also observed its activities, lowering 8-OHdG level, an index of oxidative DNA damage, in the groups treated with AC extract before whole body ${\gamma}$-irradiation (800 cGy). It is plausible that scavenging of free radicals by AC may have played an important role in providing the protection against the radiation-induced damage to the DNA. These results indicated that AC protects the DNA damage induced by ${\gamma}$-rays and might be a useful radioprotector, especially since it is a relatively nontoxic product.
This experiment was carried out to obtain the basic information on processing for product of high quality goods in Artemisia capillaris. We investigated antioxidant and antimicrobial activities by harvesting date and plant parts in Artemisia capillaris. Contents of total polyphenol compounds and flavonoids were the highest in leaf, followed by capitulum and stem. Leaf on June 30 contained 76.7 mg/g DW total phenolic compounds and 78.2 mg/g DW flavonoids. As $RC_{50}$ value, that was, the concentration of sample required for 50% reduction of DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-l-picrylhydrazyl) absorbance, was very low as $5.42\;{\mu}g$ in leaf on June 30, antioxidant activity was the highest. In addition, $RC_{50}$ of BHA, BHT and ${\alpha}-tocopherol$ were $3.09\;{\mu}g$, $24.30{\mu}g$ and $2.87{\mu}g$, respectively. And capitulum had antimicrobial activities against Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterobacter aerogenes, Citrobacter freundii, Vibrio vulnificus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Saccharomyces cerevisiae. By the way, leaf and stem rarely had antimicrobial activity. Antimicrobial activities of capitulum according to harvesting date were very various. Capitulum on August 30 had the highest antimicrobial activities against Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Vibrio vulnificus, Saccharomyces cerevisiae and on July 30 against Enterobacter aerogenes, Citrobacter freundii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
