  • Alois Riegl's aesthetic theory of visual perception provided one of important conceptual backgrounds for Vienna Art Nouveau architecture. Riegls theory of visual perception consists of geometric style and two-dimensional transformation. Riegl's theory of geometric style is based on the modern aesthetic theory of abstraction, which says that the artistic perfection can be obtained not from a direct imitation of natural objects, but from an abstract transformation of them. Riegl's theory of two-dimensional transformation, on the other hand, aims at obtaining artistic perfection by disintegrating volumetric conditions of natural things into planes and combining the planes thus obtained into another new world of art. These two theories of Alois Rigl's provided an important aesthetical background for the design strategy of 'abstract ornamentaion of two-dimension' in Vienna Art Nouveau architecture. This paper is to review the basic concept of Alois Rigl's theory of geometric style and two-dimensional transformation.

  • The following thesis has been composed with the inspiration attained from Paul Ardenne's conception on Contextual Art. In Europe and in the United States, there is a group of artists who emphasize in the importance of artist's participation in social, political, economical, environmental and moral issues. Since the 1960's, these artists have pondered on Modernism's ideas where art is contextually separated from humanly issues whereas the manners of such artists put on emphasis in the intent to participate in the real human social and ethical issues. Forerunner in this field of art such as Wolfgang Leib display hybrid or meta style in their work. His work displays a quadrilateral form of pollen which represents the simultaneous blending of two mixed ideas such as the abstract from the real. Thus heterogeneous style and philosophy which includes a range of medias and today's trend is observed in Contextual Art. Such art form is also found in landscapes where it is not seen as an observable object but rather an interactive object. It is correlated to Arte Povera of the Italian Art Movement, Support-Surface of the French Art Movement and lastly to the Fluxus. Through these art movements, we find a mutual antipathy towards putting art for sales in the capitalism market and reflect the social role of art in postmodern era.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze and understand the approach of critical fashion by comprehending the appropriation of art as a sociocultural phenomenon that influences contemporary fashion. This study inquired into the relevant literature to explain the theoretical background behind critical fashion, and conducted a case study using exhibition catalogues, exhibition works, articles, fashion magazines, and fashion-related websites in order to examine cases of appropriation strategies. As a subversion of meaning by using an existing transposable object image to deliver an experience unlike the actual image, subversive appropriation in critical fashion takes existing things as they are and rearranges them with the purpose of subverting social values while having its subversive style of appropriation. Referring to a style that focuses on labelling the distance between the subject, that refers and that which is referred to, referential appropriation has been reprogramming existing things with an internal and introspective attitudes. In other words, from an exploitative style of appropriation aimed at expanding the meaning with found in objects by avant-garde fashion designers, to a subversive style of appropriation aimed at subverting meanings with transposable objects by conceptual fashion designers, there has been a change toward the referential style of appropriation aimed at expanding artistic forms with created objects critical fashion designers.

  • Scythians kept herds of horses, cattle, and sheep, lived in tent-covered wagons, and fought with bows and arrows on horseback. They developed a rich culture characterized by opulent tombs, fine metalwork, and a brilliant art style. Typical art objects were in the form of stags or other animals, hammered or stamped out of gold and often inlaid with colored stones or glass. The Bracelet consisted of two of distinct technique : One made from heavy forged gold bars, terminated with more delicate spiraled finals. Another technique used beaten gold foil, perhaps as thick as a piece of paper with fabulous designs repousse and chased (impressed in relief into the gold with small hammers and chisels) into the metal. They also used stones and clay dies to form gold foil into people repeated also motifs for use in torques and belts. The Scythian Bracelet were divided into 4 styles according to the shape, Bracelets with ends shaped like beasts style, Spiral style, Layers style, Crown with openwork style.
