  • The paper describes the development of arrester for 154kV class power station and substation. The arrester employs silicone insulating materials for Its housing, instead of the conventional porcelain housing. The sealing integrity is related to safe operation of surge arrester, the prime failure reason of porcelain housed arresters is moisture ingress. In this paper, the sealing integrity of polymeric surge arresters for ultra high voltage is investigated with moisture ingress test. The diagnostic techniques are discusses, including watt loss, partial discharge, AC leakage current, 1mA DC voltage and residual voltage.

  • The characteristics and change of electrode surface about Gap type surge arrester for protect DC subway rail were investigated with moisture absorption. Compared that tested about DC/AC discharge commencement voltage, residual voltage, Impulse, square wave impulse for DC rail surge arrester about Gap type surge arrester of moisture absorption state. The AC discharge commencement voltage acted greatly effect of moisture absorption than the DC discharge commencement voltage test.

  • This study reports on the pressure relief design and braided composite of surge arrester. Surge arresters with porcelain housing must not have explosive breakage of the housing to minimize damage to other equipment when subjected to internal high short circuit current. As a solution, this study describes pressure relief design performance of arresters with braided composite module. In general, braided composite has Potential for improved impact and delamination resistance. Manufacturing processes of the braided composite could also be automated and could potentially lead to lower costs. Therefore, in consideration of characteristics of pressure relief for polymer arrester, the fabric pattern of braided composite was decided. And Polymer arrester module was manufactured with braid. The mechanisms of pressure occurrence and relief were investigated basically by analyzing arc energy and the correlation between thermal shock and indoor pressure in pressure relief test.

  • The chief advantage of polymer arrester, from a handling viewpoint, design of pressure relief, anti-contamination, electrical failuer was reduced by polymer arrester. The life expectancy of polymer arrester depend on a number of design factor. This paper introduced and study : new material housing (silicone composite, EPDM, EPA...), cap type sealing structure, knuckle type electrode, stress relief housing, supporting insulator and sub parts, of polymer arrester.

  • This paper describes the characteristics of lightning impulse current of ZnO block for transmission line arrester with external gap. The ageing parameters of lightning arresters ate impulse current, moisture ingress, temperature ageing and so on. Especially it is important to estimate the change of electrical characteristics by impulse current. Total energy applied to the ZnO arrester each time is $4/10{\mu}s$, 30kA and $2/20{\mu}s$, 10kA impulse current. Before and After the test, the residual voltage variation of varistors passed was below 5%. According to the test, it is thought that the ZnO arrester shows good stability with impulse current test.

  • As the effect of global warming continues, surge rates in Korea are also getting increased. Although there are devices to protect distribution line from the surge like lightning arrester, insulation of the lightning arrester can be destroyed if frequent surge occurs in distribution line. This paper assumed that the lightning surge hits the lightning arrester and make this device's insulation destroyed. This paper also simulated these processes utilizing EMTP/ATPDraw and verified voltage behavior when faults such as line to ground fault due to frequent lightning surge occur in lightning arrester.

  • In general, ZnO lighting arrester are known to exhibit an increases in resistive current with time, the rate of increase being exacerbated with increasing applied voltage. In addition, since the resistive leakage current caused by deterioration of ZnO lighting arrester mainly caused an increase of the third harmonic component, thereby it is possible the arrester degradation diagnosis by measuring the third harmonic component in the total leakage current. So, in this paper, we presents a leakage current measuring and analysis system of 18[kV] ZnO lighting arrester.

In general, braided composite has potential for improved impact and delamination resistance.   • Properties of flashover in polymer insulators are very important under pollution environments. It is necessary to analyse flashover characteristics whether insulators are still safe or not. A lot of precious information can be got out of polluted polymer insulators through leakage current measurement. The behavior of partial arc discharge leads to flashover directly. It is possible to measure partial arc discharge as leakage current pulses analysis. The shape of histogram reflects degree of pollution, wetting and voltage stress level. It can be expressed by Weibull distribution function.
