  • This work approaches the structural performance of masonry arches that have a small ratio between number of vossoirs and span length. The aim of this research is to compare and validate three different methods of analysis (funicular limit analysis F.L.A., kinematic limit analysis K.L.A. and plane stress Finite Element Analysis F.E.A.) with an experimental campaign. 18 failure tests with arches of different shapes and boundary conditions have been performed. The basic failure mechanism was the formation of enough hinges in the geometry. Nevertheless, in few cases, sliding between vossoirs also played a relevant influence. Moreover, few arches didn't reach the collapse. The FLA and KLA didn't find a solution close to the experimental values for some of the tests. The low number of vossoirs and joints become a drawback for an agreement between kinematic mechanism, equilibrium of forces and geometry constraints. FLA finds a lower bound whereas KLA finds an upper bound of the ultimate load of the arch. FEA is the most reliable and robust method and it can reproduce most of the mechanism and ultimate loads. However, special care is required in the definition of boundary conditions for FEA analysis. Scientific justification of the more suitability of numerical methods in front of classic methods at calculating arches with a few vossoirs is the main original contribution of the paper.

  • This paper deals with the strongest static arches with the solid regular polygon cross-section. Both span length and volume of arch are always held constant regardless the shape functions of cross-sectional depth of regular polygon. The normal stresses acting on such arches are calculated when both static vertical and horizontal point loads are subjected. By using the calculating results of stresses, the optimal shapes of strongest static arches are obtained, under which the maximum normal stress become to be minimum. For determining the redundant of such indeterminate arches, the least work theorem is adopted. As the numerical results, the configurations, i.e. section ratios, of the strongest static arches are reported in tables and figures. The results of this study can be utilized in the field of the minimum weight design of the arch structures.

  • The purposes of present study were to evaluate changes in models and lateral cephalometric head films during orthodontic treatment and to compare the amount of incisal retraction and anterior movement of molars with the two approaches of the retraction method of canine(sectional canine retractions vs sliding canine retractions) and the anchorage management(head gears vs no head gears, transpalatal arches vs no transpalatal arches and lingual arches vs no lingual arches) and to evaluate changes during orthodontic treatment in models with relation to lateral cephalometric head films. 67 Korean women with Angle's Class I bialveolar protrusion were selected, whose initial chronologic age was above 16 yrs. Models and lateral cephalometric head films were taken before and after orthodontic treatment with four bicuspid extraction. the results were obtained as follows. 1. Significant decreases were observed in intermolar width, arch length and arch perimeter of maxilla and mandible but significant difference was not observed in intercanine width of maxilla and mandible during treatment period. 2. The linear change of the upper incisor to upper lip was 2.84:1 and the linear change of the lower incisor to lower lip was 1.45:1 3. There were no significant differences between the two groups(sectional canine retractions vs sliding canine retractions), the !we groups(transpalatal arches vs no transpalatal arches) and the two groups(lingual arches vs no lingual arches) in the amount of incisal retraction and anterior movement of molars. There were a greater amount of maxillary incisal retraction and a lesser amount of anterior movement of maxillary molars with the use of head gears than no use of head gears. 4. Changes during orthodontic treatment in models with relation to lateral cephalometric head films were obtained as follows : 1) Maxilla Central incisors were moved 3.79mm backward, canines were moved 0.22mm laterally and 3.70mm backward, and molars were moved 0.535mm medially and 2.29mm forward. 2) Mandible Central incisors were moved 3.04mm backward, canines were moved 0.145mm laterally and 3.92mm backward, and molars were moved 0.755mm medially and 1.77mm forward.

  • This paper presents experimental and numerical studies on effects of local damages on the in-plane elastic-plastic buckling and strength of a fixed parabolic steel tubular arch under a vertical load distributed uniformly over its span, which have not been reported in the literature hitherto. The in-plane structural behaviour and strength of ten specimens with different local damages are investigated experimentally. A finite element (FE) model for damaged steel tubular arches is established and is validated by the test results. The FE model is then used to conduct parametric studies on effects of the damage location, depth and length on the strength of steel arches. The experimental results and FE parametric studies show that effects of damages at the arch end on the strength of the arch are more significant than those of damages at other locations of the arch, and that effects of the damage depth on the strength of arches are most significant among those of the damage length. It is also found that the failure modes of a damaged steel tubular arch are much related to its initial geometric imperfections. The experimental results and extensive FE results show that when the effective cross-section considering local damages is used in calculating the modified slenderness of arches, the column bucking curve b in GB50017 or Eurocode3 can be used for assessing the remaining in-plane strength of locally damaged parabolic steel tubular arches under uniform compression. Furthermore, a useful interaction equation for assessing the remaining in-plane strength of damaged steel tubular arches that are subjected to the combined bending and axial compression is also proposed based on the validated FE models. It is shown that the proposed interaction equation can provide lower bound assessments for the remaining strength of damaged arches under in-plane general loading.

  • The differential equations governing free vibrations of the elastic arches with unsymmetric axis are derived in rectangular coordinates rather than in polar coordinates, in which the effect of rotatory inertia is included. Frequencies and mode shapes are computed numerically for parabolic arches with both clamped ends and both hinged ends. Comparisons of natural frequencies between this study and SAP 2000 are made to validate theories and numerical methods developed herein. The convergent efficiency is highly improved under the newly derived differential equations in Rectangular coordinates. The lowest four natural frequency parameters are reported, with and without the rotatory inertia, as functions of three non-dimensional system parameters: the rise to chord length ratio, the span length to chord length ratio, and the slenderness ratio. Also typical mode shapes of vibrating arches are presented.

  • This paper discusses a feasibility of a new type of two-way system for single layer lattice domes with nodal eccentricity by investigating the dynamic behavior under earthquake motions. The proposed dome is composed of two main arches, intersecting each other with T-joint struts to provide space for tensioning membranes. The main purposes of this study are to calculate the nonlinear dynamic response under severe earthquake motions and to see the possibility of using this new type of two-way system for single layer lattice domes against earthquake motions. The results show that the main arches remain elastic except yielding of the joints of strut members that can be used to absorb some amount of strain energy at strong earthquake motion. Consequently, deformation of the main arches can be reduced and any heavy damages on the main arches can be minimized. A kind of damage-control characteristic appeared in this system may be utilized against severe earthquake motions, showing a possibility of designing a new type of single layer lattice dome.

  • We have analyzed H and $K_s$-band images of the Arches cluster obtained using the NIRC2 instrument on Keck with the laser guide star adaptive optics (LGS AO) system. With the help of the LGS AO system, we were able to obtain the deepest ever photometry for this cluster and its neighborhood, and derive the background-subtracted present-day mass function (PDMF) down to $1.3M_{\bigodot}$ for the 5"-9" annulus of the cluster. We find that the previously reported turnover at $6M_{\bigodot}$ is simply due to a local bump in the mass function (MF), and that the MF continues to increase down to our 50 % completeness limit ($1.3M_{\bigodot}$) with a power-law exponent of ${\Gamma}$ = -0.91 for the mass range of 1.3 < M/$M_{\bigodot}$ < 50. Our numerical calculations for the evolution of the Arches cluster show that the ${\Gamma}$ values for our annulus increase by 0.1-0.2 during the lifetime of the cluster, and thus suggest that the Arches cluster initially had ${\Gamma}$ of $-1.0{\sim}-1.1$, which is only slightly shallower than the Salpeter value.

  • Leaning-type arch bridge is a new spatial structural system composed of two vertical arches and two leaning arches. So far there has been no contrast analysis of leaning type arch bridge with different systems. This paper focus on a parametric study of leaning type arch bridge with different systems to find the influential rules on structural forces and stability and to provide some reference for practical designs. The parametric analysis is conducted with different rise-to-span ratios and bending rigidities of arch ribs by comparing internal forces. The internal forces decline obviously with the increase of the rise-to-span ratio. The bending moments at the centers of the main arches and the leaning arches are sensitive to the bending rigidities of arch ribs. Parametric studies are also carried out with different structural systems and leaning angles of the leaning arch by comparing the static stability. The lateral stiffness of leaning-type arch bridge is less than the in-plan stiffness. Compared with the leaning-type arch bridge without thrust, the leaning-type arch bridge with thrust has a lower stability safety coefficient. The stability safety coefficient rises gradually with the increase of inclining angle of the leaning arch. This study shows that the rise-to-span ratio, bending rigidities of arch ribs, structural system and leaning angles of the leaning arch are all critical design parameters. Therefore, these parameters in unreasonable range should be avoided.

  • Numerous investigators have pointed out that the force of the tongue against the teeth within the dental arches is normally compensated for by the action of the musculature of the cheeks and lips, and that the tongue at rest occupies a large part of the oral cavity. The purpose of this study was to estimate the maximum areas of the tongue movement by measuring the inner area of the dental arches of both the maxilla and the mandible. This study was based on the study models of 30 children and 128 adults who had clinically good occlusion. There were 15 male and 15 female children whose ages ranged from four years to seven years and 82 male and 46 female adults whose ages ranged from fifteen years to fifty four years. The obtained results were as follows : 1. The mean of the maximum areas within the primary dental arches of both the maxilla and the mandible were $7.06\pm0.8\textrm{cm}^2, 5.49\pm0.77\textrm{cm}^2$ in male children and $6.82\pm0.98\textrm{cm}^2, 5.28\pm0.80\textrm{cm}^2$ in female children respectively. 2. The mean of the maximum areas within the permanent dental arches of both the maxilla and mandible were $17.01\pm2.38\textrm{cm}^2, 13.57\pm1.57\textrm{cm}^2$ in male and $16.75\pm2.08\textrm{cm}^2, 13.36\pm1.01\textrm{cm}^2$ in female respectively.

  • This study aims to investigate the effect of partially distributed loads on the static behavior of parabolic arches by using the elastic-plastic finite element model. For this purpose, the vertical, the radial, and the anti-symmetric load cases are considered, and the ratio of loading range and arch span is increased from 20% to 100%. Also, the elastic-visco-plastic analysis has been carried out to estimate the elapse time to reach the stable state of arches when the ultimate load obtained by the finite element analysis is applied. It is noted that the ultimate load carrying capacities of parabolic arches are 6.929 tf/$m^2$ for the radial load case, and 8.057 tf/$m^2$ for the vertical load case. On the other hand, the ultimate load is drastically reduced as 2.659 tf/$m^2$ for the anti-symmetric load case. It is also shown that the maximum ultimate load occurs at the full ranging distributed load, however, the minimum ultimate loads of the radial and vortical load cases are obtained by 2.336 tf/$m^2$, 2.256 tf/$m^2$, respectively, when the partially distributed load is applied at the 40% range of full arch span.
