The small size food organism(under the size 150${\mu}m$) is needed as food for early stage of marine fish larvae of small mouse (e.g the group of grouper). This study was investigated to develop a method for copepod Apocyclops sp. culture in combination with the rotifer B. rachionus for stable culture of copepod species and harvest of various size food organisms. The culture conditions as temperature, salinity, culture volume, photo period, culture preiod and observation interval were 25${\circ}C$, 22ppt, 40ml, all dark except to observation time, 16 days and every two day during the experimental period, respectively. The Tetraselmis suecica was used as the food for the two testing orgtanisms. After every two day counting, theses two organisms were transferred to fresh culture tanks with Tetraselmis suecica of $7{\times}10^5$cells/ml. In the mixed culture of B. rotundiformis and A. sp., growth of rotifer was suppressed by mixed culture with A. sp. whereas the growth of copepod Apocyclops was promoted in the mixed culture with rotifer B. rotundiformis (the maximum density was 22 individuals/ml through the 16 culture days). Moreover, the number of copepod nauplius were promoted about 2 times in the mixed culture compared to the numbers in single species culture. With this combination culture, the havested two food organisms of variable sizes. This size variation of food organisms was useful tools for larval rearing of small mouse marine fish larvae and next step food organism size of post hatched larvae.
BACKGROUND: Pesticides concentration was monitored in 50 agricultural lakes, and ecological risk for aquatic organism was assessed using risk quotient (RQ) and probabilistic methods. METHODS AND RESULTS: Pesticides concentrations detected in 50 agricultural lakes during peak season (June and September) were in the range of $0.17{\sim}0.99{\mu}g/L$. The RQ for algae and the other species was estimated to be 0.25 and below 0.01, indicating medium risk and no risk. Oxadiazon predominantly contributed to RQ value of 99% for algae, fishes, and amphibians. In terms of hazardous concentration at 5% of species ($HC_5$), ecological risk quotients (ERQ) for oxadiazon ranged from 0.18~0.33, showing a medium risk level. Overall, the concentrations of pesticides were much lower than $HC_5$), value. Probability of combined ecological risk for pesticides ranged from 1.82% to 2.41%. CONCLUSION(s): Combined ecological risk probability did not exceed the acceptable level of 5%, indicating no ecological risk for selected aquatic species. This study suggests that regular ecological risk assessment (ERA) will be required to protect and manage an agricultural lake. Not only ERA at screening level by comparing exposure with toxic effects for aquatic species also advanced ERA technique considering species in indigenous to Korea, chronic toxicity, pulse dose, fate, and environmental factors should be required.

Artificially-produced juvenile black sea bream Acanthopagrus schlegeli (total length $8.3{\pm}1.0\;cm$, body weight $11.2{\pm}4.2\;g$) were released in eelgrass, Zostera marina bed and their initial food organism and changes of body compositions were investigated for one month after release. Predation rates in fish sampled on 1st and 3rd days were 79%, increased up to 100% on 7th and 10th days, and then decreased on 30th days as 75%. Major prey organisms was composed of mainly Amphipoda and Gastropoda. Ratio of Amphipoda and Gastropoda in stomach were highest in fish sampled on 15th and 1st days after release, respectively. Crustacea and Algae were maintained about 20% during a sampling period. Visceral weight index (VWI) offish sampled 20th and 30th after release were significantly higher than that of initial. Carcass crude protein and lipid contents of released fish were showed significantly decreasing; however carcass n-3 HUFA composition was showed increasing tendency with the passage of time after release. Eelgrass bed was supposed to be helpful for the released fish to adjust their feeding habits and biochemical metabolism to the natural environment within a short period after release.
The productivity of cyclopoid copepod, Apocyclops royi fed by various diets (Isochrysis galbana, Tetraselmis suecica, Phaeodactylum tricornutum, concentrated freshwater Chlorella and baker's yeast) was investigated at tile different temperatures ($16-36^{\circ}C$) with different salinities (5-34 ppt). A. royi was cultured in 6 ml vessels (12 wells culture plate). Total production (188 inds.) and daily production (13.4 inds.) of nauplii by A. royi female at $32^{\circ}C$ were significantly higher than those of nauplii at the different temperatures (P<0.05). Development time from nauplii to copepodite and from nauplii to adult tended to increase with increasing water temperature up to 32. And total production (169 inds.) and daily production (9 inds.) of nauplii by A. royi female at 10 ppt were significantly higher than those of nauplii at the different salinities (P<0.05). The fastest development time from nauplii to copepodite and from nauplii to adult was observed at 10 ppt and 15 ppt, respectively (P<0.05). The highest total production of A. royi nauplii and fastest development time from nauplii to adult were obtained in females fed Isochrysis galbana (P<0.05). These results may indicate that the optimum culture temperature and salinity for A. royi are $32^{\circ}C$ and 10 ppt, respectively, and Isochrysis galbana is one of the suitable diets for this copepod.
A long-term (26 weeks) feeding experiment was conducted to examine the essentiality and requirement of inositol in diets for olive flounder because no information is available in the species. Five casein-gelatin based semi-purified diets were formulated to contain four different levels of myo-inositol (0, 0+antibiotic, 400, 800, and 1600 mg/kg, designated as M0, M0+, M400, M800, and M1600, respectively). One (M0+) of the control diets contained tetracycline hydrochloride (0.4%, wt/wt) as an antibiotic to inhibit biosynthesis of inositol by micro-organism in intestine of fish. Olive flounder at the early juvenile stage (initial body weight 1.22 g) were randomly distributed into fifteen 35 L tanks (48 fish/tank) and fed with one of the experimental diets (3 replicates per diet). At the end of the feeding trial, the weight gain, feed intake, specific growth rate, and protein efficiency ratio of fish fed diets containing higher levels of myo-inositol (M800 & M1600) were significantly higher than those of fish fed the other diets (P<0.05). Feed conversion ratio, survival, hematocrits, and hemoglobin of fish fed experimental diets were not significantly different among all the fish groups. Whole body compositions of fish were not different except for lipid content. The lipid content was significantly different between M0 and M400 diet groups. These results indicate that juvenile olive flounder requires dietary supplementation of myo-inositol in diets for normal growth and its optimum level seems to be approximately 800 mg myo-inositol/kg diet.
This study was carried out to examine the drift of Gammarus sobaegensis by acid stress as pH depression in Oweol creek from April 1996 to October 1996. The behavioral drifting was revealed to the characteristics of G. sobaegensis that is tend to increase as acid stress. And, tolerance level of G. sobaegensis to pH depression was different among the size classes. Individuals belong to small to medium size classes were weak in lower pH. Pattern of response in G. sobaegensis has a lower tolerance to acid stress at below pH 4.0 than above pH 5.0 in the artificial channel and show the possibility as an effective aquatic ecotoxicity test organism. The result of analysis of variance, water temperature (F-ratio : 66.596, p< 0.0005) and the size classes (F-ratio : 71.386, p< 0.0005) except pH level (F-ratio : 353.415, p<0.0005) were showed to the major factor for drift behavior by acid depression. In Korea, a small proportion of fishery products are contaminated with a considerable amount of potentially hazardous contaminants. So, there is generally a high risks to consumers. Inorganic contaminants with the greatest potential for toxicity are Sb, As, Cd, Pb, Hg, Se and the Sulfides. As appears to be much more variable than the others. This study was performed to assess the levels of the As in fisheries caught from the waters of the western coast of Korea. The samples included 26 kinds of fishes, 18 kinds of Mollusca, 3 kinds of Crustacea and 7 kinds of salted fishes. The Moisture content of molluscans was significantly higher than that of others (p<0.05). And the As contents of crustaceans were significantly higher than those of fishes, molluscans and salted fishes (p<0.05). The As content of Turban shell was 51.62 ppm, which was the highest among the samples. Also, the As contents of eel, cuttle fish and blue crab were found to be higher than in other fisheries. This variability offers a solution for the reduction of exposure to As through restricting the harvest of aquatic organism from the western coast of Korea.
As seed production program is growing prosperously in various fishes in southern Korea, disease problems in larval and juvenile stages have emerged as a new research object. The following results were obtained from investigation about environmental factors related to mass mortalities of young Kinki red seabream, Pagrus major in process of artificial seedling production. Total length of red seabream larvae hatched was 2.93mm, and became 18.83~20.12mm at day 40. The first noticeable mortality of red seabream larvae (7.98~9.37mm) occurred in 25~30 day-old fish with the survival rates of 59.8~60.3%. Thereafter the mortality of larvae decreased, survival rate was 20.5~25.45% in day 40. After 20~30 days, the quality of pond water was bellow II class. During the experimental period COD, $PO_4$-P, $NO_2$-N, $NO_3$-N and $NH_$-N increased up to 3, 7, 34, 6 and 8 times, respectively, compared to initial ones. The number of viable bacteria in pond water and seabream larvae were $6.3{\times}10^6$~$2.3{\times}10^7$ cfu/ml, 4.3~$7.4{\times}10^6$ cfu/g in day 25, respectively. Among the isolated bacteria from the diseased red seabream in day 25, Vibrio spp. was considered to be the causative organism. External symptoms of this disease were floated, spined near the surface and inflated abdomen. When the isolated strain of the Vibrio was bathed to seabream larvae, $LD_50$ of seabream larvae was over $10^6$ cfu/ml of Vibrio spp.
Most of the surveys of periphyton carried out for environmental and ecosystem health assessment of streams have considered the impact made on their fixative substrates (stones, rocks, sand, silt, clay and other abiotic matters), but there has been virtually no research that considered moving substrates. This study attempted to make an analysis and assessment of the habitat environments of the microalgae attached to the skin surfaces of fish living in small streams, with a focus on their species composition and community structure. The dominant fish in the this survey were Zacco temmincki and Zacco platypus, which are usually found in the streams, and rivers, and they accounted for 62% and 19%, respectively, in relative abundance. Substrates of fish, a representative organism with the trait of moving a long distance, show a marked contrast with those of organisms fixed at a certain place. Characteristics of both the upstream and the downstream reach well reflected in the microalgae attached to the skin surface of fishes, of which diatoms took the major composition. The result of this observation is considered to be useful to provide basic data in assessment of stream health. Also it may be suggested as a biological tool for the assessment of aquatic environment in the future.
To evaluate the influences of stocking and removal of silver carp on plankton communities and physicochemical parameters, fish biomanipulation was conducted in six enclosures constructed on the coast of a hypertrophic lake during the summer of 1997. Of these, three enclosures were established for the fish-stocking experiment; one fishless enclosure used as a control and two enclosures with high and low densities of fish. The other three enclosures for the fish-removal experiment were prepared in an entirely converse process compared to that for fish stocking. The results of randomized intervention analysis (${\alpha}=0.05$) showed significant changes in several physicochemical parameters and plankton communities after fish stocking and removal. Fish stocking decreased water transparency, DO, pH and chi-a (> $40\;{\mu}m$), while increasing the concentration of nitrogen and chi-a (<$2\;{\mu}m$). However, water transparency did not increase by fish removal. Small plankton communities, such as picocyanobacteria, eukaryotic picoplankton and ciliates (<$2\;{\mu}m$) showed significant reciprocal changes after both fish treatments: increase by the presence of fish and decrease by the absence of fish. No count of large sized phytoplankton and zooplankton showed significant change in the presence of fish, while large zooplankton, Diaphanosoma, Cyclopida and nauplii were significantly increased by fish removal. Although the frequent heavy-winds and endless supply of phosphorus from the lake sediment strongly disturbed the fish behavior and enclosure management, the stocking and removal of silver carp showed an obvious reciprocal influences on plankton communities and its physico-chemical parameters in a shallow-hypertrophic lake.
