Useful Insects : Study on Behavior of Fruits Feeding and Ovipositional Characterization of Its Adult in Pylocoelia rufa (유용곤충 산업화를 위한 늦반딧불이 유충의 과일류에 대한 섭식행동과 성충의 산란특성 연구)

  • This study was conducted at rearing room to investigate the feeding behavior of fruits in the firefly (Pylocoelia rufa) larvae and the ovipositional characteristics of the adults. As a result, the pear, apple, melon, persimmon, mandarin, grape and peach were shown the feeding behavior of larvae the average 6.40, 3.25, 2.50, 2.20, 2.00, 1.40 and 1.25, respectively. However, the larvae were not shown at all feeding behavior to banana. The hours feeding behavior of firefly larvae was primarily from 8:00 pm until 2:00 am. In addition, the time at which the voracious feeding behavior was until 8:00 pm to 12:00 pm. The 6:00 pm began whisking all the larvae are hiding in the shelter. In the case of the firefly larvae fed only the edible snail, the adults were oviposition an average $49{\pm}6$ eggs. At that time larva stage, adults of the firefly eating the pears, apples, melon and eat edible snail at the same time there were oviposition the $53{\pm}7$ on average. In the case of fruits, the pears, apples, and melons has been considered worthy to take the firefly larva fed with the current land snails.

Effects of Biocontrol Agents on Weed Control, Abundance of Aquatic Animals and Insects, and Yield in Paddy Rice Fields (생물자원의 논 잡초 생물학적 방제 효과와 그에 따른 수서동물과 곤충 종수 및 벼 수량 변화)

  • Golden apple snails (Pomacea canaliculat) (GAS) are widely used for weed control in rice cultivation. However, concerns on the ecological risk of invasive GAS species are increasing. This study aimed to evaluate the overall impacts of GAS on weed control, abundance of aquatic animals and insects, and rice yield, in comparison with that from other biocontrol agents such as loach (Misgurnus mizolepis) and catfish (Silurus asotus), which are alternatives for biological weed control in rice paddy cultivation. Field experiments included five treatments; control, herbicide, GAS, loach, and catfish. During the rice growth, weed appearance and biological abundance were monitored, and at harvest, the rice yield was determined. Weed control efficiency was the highest for GAS treatment (100%), followed by that for herbicide (95.8%), loach (57.5%), and catfish treatments (31.7%). Insect abundance was considerably decreased in GAS treatment due to heavy weed removal, which affects the habitat of aquatic animals and insects. The amount of rice yield (unit: kg 10 a-1) was in the order of GAS (798.9) > loach (708.1) = herbicide (700.7) > catfish (629.4) > control (496.0). Therefore, considering the weed control efficiency, biological abudance, and rice yield, loach could be a potential alternative for biological weed control in organic rice farming. However, the activity of the biocontrol agents are susceptible to environmental conditions; therefore, further studies under different conditions are essential to confirm these findings.

Distribution Characteristics and Overwintering of Golden apple snails, Pomacea canaliculata (Gastropoda:Ampullariidae) at the Environment-friendly complex in Korea (한국 친환경농업단지의 왕우렁이 월동 및 분포특성)

  • BACKGROUND: Recently, the golden apple snail, Pomacea canaliculata has been used as an environmentally-friendly weed-control agent in rice farming. Although effective for this particular style of farming, P. canaliculata can be destructive to other crops. The objective of this study was to identify overwintering as well as regional and seasonal distribution characteristics of P. canaliculata. Notably, winter is typically fatal for P. canaliculata. However, owing to increasing average global temperatures, we assessed the ability of P. canaliculata to survive through uncharacteristically warm winters. METHODS AND RESULTS: To examine the distribution and overwintering regions of P. canaliculata, We conducted a survey from April 2020 to May 2021 on environmentally-friendly rice fields, agricultural waterways, and streams in 23 cities belonging to 8 provinces. In addition, because air temperature may influence the distribution density of P. canaliculata, we analyzed the winter temperature data (http://weather.rda.go.kr). CONCLUSION(S): In 2021, overwintering of P. canaliculata (1-3 individuals/m2) was observed in the Goheung and Yeongam regions in Jeonnam. Overwintering of P. canaliculata was observed in fewer regions in 2021 than in 2020; this fact may be attributed to the lower minimum temperatures measured in 2021 (approximately 8℃ lower) than those in 2020. Our results suggest that overwintering occurs as long as overnight temperatures are ≥ -15℃, but can take place if temperatures are as low as -19℃.
