Objective: The aim of this case report was to present the effects of traditional Korean medicine on a patient with Broca's aphasia associated with cerebral hemorrhage after middle cerebral artery infarction. Methods: The Korean version of the Western Aphasia Battery (K-WAB) and the Evaluation of Articulator Performance were used to evaluate the language functions of the patient. Herbal medication and acupuncture were administered to improve the patient's symptoms. Results: The inpatient and outpatient treatments improved the patient's symptoms. The aphasia quotient (AQ) score of the K-WAB test before treatment was 6.4, but it increased to 21.4 after treatment. The Evaluation of Articulator Performance score improved by 0.0 points before treatment, by 1.0 points after 9 days of treatment, and by 1.5 points after 42 days of treatment. Conclusions: This case report suggest that Korean medical therapy can be effective in improving the language functions of patients with Broca's aphasia.

Objective: To report the case of a patient suffering from Broca’s aphasia after cerebral infarction, which was improved by Korean medical treatments, especially five-element acupuncture.Methods: To relievesymptoms, Korean medicine treatments such as acupuncture, moxibustion, and herb medication were performed. To evaluate the effect of the treatments, articulation accuracy, vowel accuracy, and the sequential motion rate of articulator were checked.Result: After treatments for 28 days, the symptoms were improved.Conclusion: This report suggests that five-element acupuncture can be effectively used for patients with Broca’s aphasia after cerebral infarction.

Familial Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (fCJD) is characteristic with older age onset, relatively low occurrence rate, slower progression and lower possibility of developing myoclonus, cerebellar, pyramidal signs and visual disturbance compared with classical sporadic CJD. We report a case of 75-year-old male patient presented with sudden onset of right side weakness with Broca's aphasia who has been diagnosed with fCJD with V180I mutation. This case indicates that fCJD with V180I mutation can have stroke-like initial presentation.

The purpose of this study was to compare receptive language performance and expressive language performance in 13 patients with aphasia by using three stimulus presentation modes: Stimulus mode I (picture), Stimulus mode II (written word), Stimulus m (question using verbal explanation). The stimulus consisted of 10 words. They included 5 functional words and 5 non-functional words. The 13 subjects with aphasia were divided into 2 aphasic types: 5 Broca's aphasics and 8 anomie aphasics. The results were as follows: Firstly, the three stimulus modes didn't affect receptive language performance of aphasia subjects. Secondly; the three stimulus modes were effective on expressive language performance of aphasia subjects. Particularly, stimulus mode II (written words) was effective in naming the aphasia subjects. Thirdly, the functional words with high frequency were better than non-functional words with low frequency on expressive language performance, but not on receptive language performance of aphasia subjects. Finally, the interaction between three stimulus modes and the functional (nonfunctional) words affected expressive language performance only, but not receptive language performance. Particularly, presenting stimulus in written words which are functional words produced the best expressive language performance.

Aphasia is a dysfunction in recognition and communication, Most instances of aphasia are caused by cerebral disease, especially when a dominant hemisphere is injured. It brings about serious problem in treatment and in directing a therapeutic course for return to social community. A stroke patient who was adimitted Dongguk Bundang Oriental hospital was treated. This subject was diagnosed with Broca Aphasia and Flaccid Tongue(舌?) induced by Yang-deficiency of Kidney(腎陽虛). She was adiministered Jiwhangeumja(地黃飮子) and Scalp acupuncture, and the degree of her aphsia was measured with the Western Aphasia Battery. After three weeks, The patient improved in speaking and general depressed condition.

This study investigated the improvement level of communication ability by mediation method using Cheap Talk in four severe Broca's aphasia patients, who have more difficulties in expression than comprehension. In the preliminary and post test, making nutritious rice dish and vegetable pancakes were performed. In the mediation stage, the activities of going to markets, making kimchi and bean paste soup were performed and script activities were performed in the first week and activities using picture cards were executed in the next week by turns. The results of this study were as follows. First, the communication functions of all subjects were improved under all of the courses using Cheap Talk. Second, the method of mediation by using picture cards showed higher communication functions than the method of mediation by using script activity with the use of Cheap Talk.

The purpose of this case study was to report the effectiveness of aphasia in patients with cerebral infarction with hydrocephalus. A patient diagnosed with a middle cerebral artery infarction and hydrocephalus was treated with Gami-cheongeumjowi-tang, acupuncture, and moxibustion. The degree of improvement of symptoms was evaluated using the Korean version of the Frenchay Aphasia Screening Test (K-FAST) and the Mini-Mental State Examination-Korea (MMSE-K). At the time of admission, the K-FAST score was 7 points and the MMSE-K score was 4 points because no words other than 'Yes' could be spoken. At discharge, the K-FAST score was 22 points and the MMSE-K score was 19 points. A particularly noticeable improvement was found in spoken and written comprehension, reading, and repetition. The study findings indicate that Korean medicine treatment can be used to treat the symptoms of patients with aphasia. The periventricular region may be distorted by hydrocephalus, resulting in Broca's aphasia in a cerebral infarction of the middle cerebral artery inferior division.

Objectives : This study was designed to report the clinical effects of scalp acupuncture on patients who suffered from broca aphasia caused by cerebral hemorrhage, Methods : Scalp acupuncture therapy was applied on the above patients for several weeks, For the evaluation of improvement, language field was monitored by aphasia test(RISS) and speech field was monitored by phonetic analysis in the computerized speech lab. Results : According to the above evaluation items, the treatment was beneficial. The score of most items rose in the language field. And scalp acupuncture affected VOT, TD and articular error patterns positively in the speech field. Conclusions : The above results suggest that scalp acupuncture has good effects on the patients with broca aphasia caused by cerebral hemorrhage.

본 연구목적은 한국어판 실어증감별진단검사를 이용하여 2회 이상 경과를 검토할 수 있었던 Broca실어의 3증례에 있어서의 개선경과를 초회평가시의 실어증 중등도가 거의 같은 일본의 장기 관찰예와 비교하여 장애 pattern의 검출 및 개선경과의 추적에 있어서의 한국판 실어증 감별진단검사의 유효성을 검토하였다. 그 결과, 신경학적으로 안정되어있는 실어증환자의 경우 중증도별로 보면, 언어과정 전반의 득점 profile은 유사성이 높았으며, 치료경과에 양국어의 일반성과 특수성이라고 하는 면에서는 금후 한층 더 상세한 토의가 요구되었다.

Motor aphasia is an affection frequently caused by insult of the left middle cerebral artery and usually accompanied by a large lesion involving the Broca's area and the adjacent motor and premotor areas. Therefore, a patient with motor aphasia commonly shows articulatory disturbances due to failure of the motor programing of speech sound. Objective assessment and treatment of phonologic programing is one of the important aspects of speech therapy in aphasic patients. We analyzed the speech disorders acompanied with motor aphasia in a 45-year-old man using a computerized sound spectrograph, Visi-$Pitch{\circledR}$, and Multi-Dimensional Voice $Program{\circledR}$. We concluded that a computerized speech analysis system is a useful tool to visualize and quantitatively analyse the severity and progression of dysarthria, and the effect of speech therapy.
