Recently, Molten carbonate fuel cells(MCFCs) have been developing to get a good durability and economic feasibility for commercialization. To achieve these objectives, the cost of nickel based electrodes should be reduced. Regular anode thickness used in MCFCs is normally 0.7mm. Thus, in our study, the purpose was to reduce anode thickness up to 0.3 mm keeping MCFC performance on standard levels. In-situ sintering has been used, with 2 different fabrication methods (method A and B) and 2 different supports (support 1 and 2). Voltage losses at different temperature (600,620,640,$650^{\circ}C$) and after 1000 hours showed the higher performance that can be obtained using method B and support 2. After single cell test, an open-circuit voltage(OCV) of 1.075 V and a closed-circuit voltage(CCV) of 0.829V were obtained, at current density of $150mV/cm^2$. Also the voltage loss ratio at different cell temperature was lower in the case of method B and support 2. According to these results, the cost of anode fabrication can be reduced in the future, contributing for the economical feasibility of MCFCs.
To overcome the limitations of the conventional Ni anode-supported SOFCs, various types of ceramic anodes have been studied. However, these ceramic anodes are difficult to commercialize because of their low cell performances and difficulty in manufacturing anode-support typed SOFCs. Therefore, in this study, to use these ceramic anodes and take advantage of anode-supported SOFC, which can minimize ohmic loss from the thin electrolyte, we fabricated cathode support-typed SOFC. The cathode-support of LSCF-YSZ was prepared by the acid treatment of conventional Ni-YSZ (Yttria-stabilized Zirconia) anode-support, followed by the infiltration of LSCF to YSZ scaffold. The composite of $La(Sr)Ti(Ni)O_3$ and $Ce(Mn,Fe)O_2$ was used as the ceramic anode. The fabricated cathode-supported button cell showed a relatively low power density of $0.207Wcm^{-2}$ at $850^{\circ}C$; however, it is expected to show better performance through the optimization of the infiltration rate and thickness of LSCF-YSZ cathode-support layer.
$LaCrO_3$ series are the most common candidate materials for a ceramic interconnect for SOFC and the thermal expansion coefficient of these matches very well with that of YSZ electrolyte. In this study, characteristics of the coated films on the anode-support, which were formed by using $La_{0.8}Ca_{0.2}CrO_3$, $La_{0.8}Sr_{0.2}CrO_3$, $La_{0.8}Ca_{0.2}Co_{0.1}Cr_{0.9}O_3$ for ceramic interconnet for SOFC, were investigated. All powders showed single perovskite phase and the precursors had spherical shapes of $2{\mu}m{\sim}30{\mu}m$. According to SEM analysis, coated film of LCC on pretreated anode-support was more thicker, whereas the coated film on untreated anode-support was densely formed. As the results of electrical conductivity of anode-support coated with the ceramic interconnects, LCCC exhibited the most excellent electrical conductivity of 0.15S/cm at $750^{\circ}C$.
Improving the microstructure of NiO/YSZ is one of several approaches used to enhance the electrical and mechanical properties of an anode support in Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFCs). The aim of the work reported in this paper was to predict the relationship between these microstructural changes and the resulting properties. To this end, modification of the anode microstructure was carried out using different sizes of Poly (Methyl Methacrylate) (PMMA) beads as a pore former. The electrical conductivity and mechanical strength of these samples were measured using four-probe DC, and three-point bend-test methods, respectively. Thermal etching followed by high resolution SEM imaging was performed for sintered samples to distinguish between the three phases (NiO, YSZ, and pores). Recently developed image analysis techniques were modified and used to calculate the porosity and the contiguity of different phases of the anode support. Image analysis results were verified by comparison with the porosity values determined from mercury porosimetry measurements. Contiguity of the three phases was then compared with data from electrical and mechanical measurements. A linear relationship was obtained between the contiguity data determined from image analysis, and the electrical and mechanical properties found experimentally. Based upon these relationships we can predict the electrical and mechanical properties of SOFC support from the SEM images.
The Ni-Al anodes of the molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) with three different structures were successfully fabricated in order to reduce the thickness of the anode down to 0.3 mm; one was the non-supported anode made by a conventional tape casting method, and others were the supported anodes made by lamination or direct casting on the nickel screen. It was seen from the physical analyses and cell operation that the supported thin anodes made by direct casting showed good mechanical strength and cell performance because of a good contact between the anode materials and the support. The single cell using the above anode showed the cell voltage of 0.858 V at the current density of 150$mA/cm^2$ with the nitrogen cross-over of only 0.6% at the operation time of 1,000 h, which was similar to the performance of the conventional thick (0.7 mm) anode. The ability to utilize a thin configuration of anode should cut down the amount of nickel alloy and consequently reduce its manufacturing cost.
Optimization of the fabrication process of NiO-yttrium doped barium zirconate (BZY) composite anode substrates using tape-casting for high performance thin-film protonic ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs) is investigated. The anode substrate is composed of a tens of microns-thick anode functional layer laminated over a porous anode substrate. The macro-pore structure of the anode support is induced by micron-scale polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) pore formers. Thermal gravity analysis (TGA) and a dilatometer are used to determine the polymeric additive burn-out and sintering temperatures. Crystallinity and microstructure of the tape-cast NiO-BZY anode are analyzed after the sintering.
The MEA with the catalyst layer containing PtRu black and 60 wt. %Pt/C as their anode and cathode catalysts. For find to effect of carbon support, the MEA with platinum black for cathode catalyst was fabricated. The performance of the MEA with the catalyst layer containing (PtRu black:60 wt.% Pt/C) as their anode and cathode catalyst has shown competitively higher value than the performance of the MEA with the catalyst layer containing (PtRu black:Pt black) as their anode and cathode catalyst.
Carbon nanofiber (CNF) grown catalytically was chemically activated with KOH to attain structural change of CNF. The structural changes of CNF through KOH activation were investigated by using BET and SEM. From the results of BET, it was found that KOH activation was effective to develop particular sizes of pores on the CNF surface, increasing the surface area of CNF. Activated CNF was applied as an anode catalyst support of fuel cell. The effects of different activation conditions including the activation temperature and the activation time on the specific surface area of the CNF activated with KOH were investigated to obtain appropriate structure as a catalyst support. The 60 wt% Pt-Ru catalyst prepared was observed by using TEM and XRD.
