Recent Progress on Voltage Drop Compensation in Top Emission Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLED)

  • The voltage drop due to the thin cathode film at the large size top emission OLED panel was successfully compensated with making electrical contact between thin cathode and anode auxiliary electrode by 355nm wavelength of laser. It was found that the luminance uniformity dramatically increased from around 15% to more than 80% through this electrical compensation between thin cathode and anode auxiliary electrode. Moreover, the removing process for EL materials on the anode auxiliary electrode process by laser was very reliable and stable. Therefore, it is thought that the EL removal method using laser to make electrical contacts is very appropriate to mass production for such a large size top emission OLEDs to obtain high uniformity of luminance.

  • In a structure of ITO/CuPc/Al, we have studied that the properties of photovoltaic efficiency of copper phthalocyanine(CuPc) in donor layer using simulation. As a rusult, we have confirmed that anode current density is decreased and anode voltage is increased as increasing the thickness of CuPc. Also, when the light intensities is 10 [$mW/cm^2$], the external quantum efficiency is better than the others at the best wavelength of visible spectrum..

  • A dual-gate SOI SA-LIGBT (shorted-anode lateral insulated gate bipolar transistor) which eliminates the snapback effectively is proposed and verified by numerical simulation. The elimination of the snapback in I-V characteristics is obtained by initiating the hole injection at low anode voltage by employing a dual gate and a floating electrode in the proposed device. For the proposed device, the snapback phenomenon is completely eliminate, while snapback of conventional SA-LIGBT occurs at anode voltage of 11 V. Also, the drive signals of two gates have same polarity by employing the floating electrode, thereby requiring no additional power supply.

  • A trench shorted anode LIGBT (TSA-LIGBT) which decreases the device area and the forward voltage drop has been proposed and verified by 2D device simulations. The trench located in the shorted anode would form the shorted anode. The simulation results show that TSA-LIGBT decrease the device area by about 20% and the forward voltage drop by over 75% compared with the conventional ones. Also the troublesome negative differential resistance (NDR) regime has been eliminated successfully in the TSA-LIGBT.

  • A new lateral trench electrode IGBT with p+ diverter was Proposed to suppress latch-up of LTIGBT. The p+ diverter was placed between the anode and cathode electrode. The latch-up of LTEIGBT with a p+ diverter was effectively suppressed to sustain an anode voltage of 8.7V and a current density of 1453A/$\textrm{cm}^2$ while in the conventional LTIGBT, latch-up occurred at an anode current density of 540A/$\textrm{cm}^2$. And the forward blocking voltage of the proposed LTEIGBT with a p+ diverter was about 140V. That of the conventional LTIGBT of the same size was no more than 105V. When the gate voltage is applied 12V, the forward conduction currents of the Proposed LTEIGBT with a p+ diverter and the conventional LIGBT are 90mA and 70mA, respectively, at the same breakdown voltage of 150V.

Built-in voltage depending on electrode in organic light-emitting diodes (전극 변화에 따른 유기 발광 소자의 내장 전압)

  • Built-in voltage in organic light-emitting diodes was studied using modulated photocurrent technique ambient conditions. From the bias voltage-dependent photocurrent, built-in voltage of the device is determined. The applied bias voltage when the magnitude of modulated photocurrent is zero corresponds to a built-in voltage. Built-in voltage in the device is generated due to a difference of work function of the anode and cathode. A device was made with a structure of anode/$Alq_3$/cathode to study a built-in voltage. ITO was used as an anode, and Al and LiAl were used as a cathode. A layer thickness of Al and LiAl were 100nm. Obtained built-in voltage is about 1.0V in the Al layer was used as a cathode. The obatined built-in voltage is about 1.6V in the LiAl layer was used as a cathode. The result of built-in voltage is dependent of cathode. We can see that the built-in voltage increase up to 0.4V when the LiAl layer was used as the cathode. These results correspond to the work function of LiAl which is lower than that of Al. As a result, the barrier height for an electron injection from the cathode to the organic layer could be lowered when the LiAl was used as a cathode.

  • Optical and electrical properties of various transparent conducting oxides (ITO, AZO, ITO/Ag/ITO, AZO/Ag/AZO) were investigated for anode of OLED display. ITO/Ag/ITO multi-layer anode has much better electrical and optical characteristics than other films, and OLED on that anode showed lower threshold voltage and better luminescence.

  • It is indicated that in SCR the anode current can be controlled by ajusting the gate voltage when the magnitude of anode current lies in the range of 10-2 to 10-3 Amperes. This fact is applied to make a simple sinusoidal oscillator circuit which has the negative resistance characteristics in its gate circuit by inserting a proper resistor into its cathode circuit.

Effects of Microcurrent and High Voltage Pulsed Galvanic Current Stimulation on Fibular Fracture Healing of the Rabbits (미세전류자극과 고전압 맥동직류 통전이 토끼의 비골 골절치유에 미치는 효과)

  • This study investigated the degree of fracture healing using cathode stimulation of microcurrent, cathode and anode stimulation of High Voltage Pulsed Galvanic Current (HVPGC). Measures were performed by X-ray test and Hematoxylin-Eosin stain and Masson's trichrome stain and osteocalcin-positive immunoreactivity. In the measure of X-ray, microcurrent stimulation group revealed more rapid recovery than the groups of HVPGC's cathode and anode stimulation in bone union degrees. Microcurrent group showed significant difference statistically (p<0.05). However, the groups of HVPGC's cathode and anode stimulation didn't show significant difference statistically(p>0.05). In the histologic examination with Hematoxylin-Eosin and Masson's trichrome, microcurrent stimulation group was observed more proliferation of irregular woven bones than the groups of HVPGC's cathode and anode stimulation. Osteocalcin-positive immunoreactivity was observed more osteoblast, osteocyte, osteoclast, bone matrix than the groups of HVPGC's cathode and anode stimulation. Microcurrent stimulation can be considered an effective way during healing of fresh fracture and it can show more effective method than HVPGC's cathode and anode stimulation in the fracture healing.

Characteristics of phosphorescent OLEDs and flexible OLED fabricated indium-zinc-tin-oxide anode (IZTO 애노드를 이용하여 제작한 인광 OLED 및 플랙시블 OLED 특성)

  • In this work, we have investigated the characteristics of the phosphorescent OLED and flexible OLED fabricated on IZTO/glass and IZTO/PET anode film grown by magnetron sputtering, respectively. Electrical and optical characteristics of amorphous IZTO/glass anode exhibited similar to commercial ITO anode even though it was deposited at room temperature. In addition, the amorphous IZTO anode showed higher work function than that of the commercial ITO anode after ozone treatment for 10 minutes. Furthermore, a phosphorescent OLED fabricated on amorphous IZTO anode film showed improved current-voltage-luminance characteristics, external quantum efficiency and power efficiency in contrast with phosphorescent OLED fabricated on commercial ITO anode film. This indicates that IZTO anode is promising alternative anode materials for anode in OLEDs and flexible OLEDs.
