This study was designed to investigate the variation of mandibular pattern and cranial base and their association in the craniofacial malocclusion. The material was the 165 cephalometric radiographs taken from craniofacial malocclusion. The sample was devided into two groups by age child group aged from 10 to 13 years and adult group aged over 18 years, and each group was devided into 3 types of malocclusion; class I, Class II div. 1 and Class III malocclusion. Child group consist of 35 samples and adult group consist of 20 samples in each malocclusion type. Various angular and linear measurements on the cephalometric radiographs were recorded and statistically analyzed. The results of the study were as follows; 1. The cranial base angle was largest in Class II div. 1 malocclusion and smallest in Class III malocclusion 2. The anterior cranial base length was largest in Class II div. 1 malocclusion but posterior cranial base length did not show statistical difference. 3. The mandibular body length of Class III malocclusion was larger than those of Class I and Class II div. 1 malocclusion in the adult group but did not shown difference in the child group. The ramus height of Class III malocclusion was larger than those of Class I and Class II div. 1 malocclusion in the child and adult group, but there were no difference between Class I and Class II div. 1 malocclusion. 4. The mandibular position was showed low correlation with the cranial base angele.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the morphology of mandibular symphysis and location of lower incisor under the influence of the craniofacial skeleton in skeletal Class III malocclusion. The sample consisted of 132 adults who have severe Class III malocclusion(prognathism group, 33 males and 33 females), and who have normal occlusion(normal group, 33 males and 33 females). They had not received any orthodontic treatment or orthognathic surgery. The lateral cephalograms were evaluated. The results were as follows : 1. Prognathism group were larger than normal group in comparison of facial skeleton (p<0.05) with the exception of ${\angle}FH-Pal$, ${\angle}SNA$. 2. In the morphology of symphysis, measurements of anteroposterior width(LaABBW, LiABBW, SW) of prognathism group were significantly less than that of normal group(p<0.001). 3. In the correlative analysis between the craniofacial skeleton and symphysis measurements of prognathism group, vertical measurements in relation with cranial base and mandibular plane showed reverse correlationship with anteroposterior width of symphysis(LiACBW, LaACBW, LiABBW, SW)(p<0.05). But, there was not distinct difference between horizontal skeletal measurements and symphysis measurements(p>0.05). 4. The probability by regression test between vertical measurements(${\angle}SN-Mn,\;{\angle}FMA,\;{\angle}Pal-Mn,\;{\angle}LFH$) and symphysis measurements(LiACBW, LiABBW, SW, ${\angle}LISA$) were very high(p<0.001).
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the characteristics of craniofacial skeleton on orthognathic surgical cases with skeletal Class III malocclusion. For this study, 74 students at the dental college of Chosun University volunteered as a normal occlusion group. They had well-balanced faces and good occlusions with acceptable Class I molar relationship. They had not received orthodontic treatment and had no signs or symptoms of temporomandibular joint dysfunction. 45 malocclusion patients enrolled for orthognathic surgical treatment with skeletal Class III malocclusion at the Department of Orthodontics, College of Dentistry, Chosun University. On the basis of this study. the results of this study were as follows: 1. Skeletal Class III malocclusion was largely due to the overgrowth of mandible in man and the undergrowth of maxilla in woman. 2. The mandible was antero-inferiorly overgrown by large MP-HP angle and large genial angle in orthognathic surgical cases with skeletal Class III malocclusion. And also, upper incisors were severely labioversioned, but on the other hand lower incisors were linguoversioned. 3. In female, lower-third facial height was characteristically shortened in comparison with middle-third facial height and also, lower facial throat angle was small in male.
The prevalence of normal occlusion and malocclusion was assessed by Angle's Classification method for 8989 school students at 7-22 years in Seoul. The occurrence of malocclusion and the need-for orthodontic treatment was 61 per cent among them. Results indicated no significant differences between the sexes for the occlusal relationships of the mandible to the maxille. The prevalence of Class I, Class II, and Class III malocclusion in all malocclusion was shown to be Class I, 45.7 per cent; Class II, 7.6 per cent; and Class III, 7.9 per cent. Class II Division 1 was observed to occur four times frequently compared to Class II Division 2 in Class II malocclusions. Class III malocclusion was shown to occur more frequently compared that of Caucasians.

The present study was designed to compare morphological and structural relationships between basicranial measurements such as MCF angulation (Ar-SE-ptm), saddle angle (N-S-Ba, N-S-Ar) and facial structures including types of malocclusion. Twenty six children with Class III whose longitudinal headfilms were available from 7 to 12-year-old, and also 26 cross-sectional headfilms at each ages of 8, 9, 10 and 11 with Class I were selected for the investigation. Cephalometric measurements such as Ar-SE-ptm, N-S-Ba, N-S-Ar, N-SE-Ar, SNA, SNB, N-S/PM vert, CP/PM vert, $\underline{1}/FH$ plane, and $N-perp/\underline{1}$ were measured. Morphologic relationships and pattern of changes in facial structures in relation to the changes of MCF and saddle angle in both malocclusion types were analysed statistically employing ANOVA, t-test and Pearson correlation. Results suggest that the MCF rather than the saddle angle in children with Class I and III is more closely related with various facial structures and with their changes. It may be, therefore, suggested that the MCF be one of the biologically meaningful measurements in determining structural relationships between cranial base and facial complex including types of malocclusion. In addition, the MCF and its correlated facial structures in children with Class III, interestingly, showed somewhat marked changes between the ages of 9 and 11.
The aspects examined in the present study concerning the location and position of the lower third molar and the interrelationships of this molar, the gonial angle, and the second lower molar in subjects aged 8-24 are based on measurements made from 472 orthopantomograms. The following conclusion were drawn on the basis of the present study. 1. The gonial angle decreased with age, but slight enlarging occurred in the age group 20-21. 2. The angulation of the third molar in relation to the second molar did not correlate with the size of the gonial angle but decreased with developmental stage. 3. The mesial angle between the longitudinal axis of the second molar and the mandibular base line correlated significantly with the gonial angle. The above angle were smaller in Class II, Divison 2 and larger in Class III than in Class I and Class II, Division 1. 4. The rate of presence of lower third molar was 74.4%.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the amount and interrelationship of the soft and hard tissue changes after simultaneous maxillary clockwise rotation and mandibular setback surgery in skeletal class III malocclusion. The sample comprised of 16 adult patients who had anteroposterior skeletal discrepancy. These patients had received presurgical orthodontic treatment and surgical treatment which consisted of Le fort I Osteotomy and bilateral saggital split ramus osteotomy. The presurgical (T1) and postsurgical (T2) lateral cephalograms were evaluated. The computerized statistical analysis was carried out with SPSS/PC program. The results demonstrated a decrease in the vertical dimension in the soft and hard tissue. The nasolabial angle was increased and the mentolabial angle was decreased. The results showed also many statistically significant correlations(p<0.05). The lower lip closely followed the skeletal movement of the B- point in the horizontal plane. The double jaw rotation surgery can afford a good solution to solve the problems of class III malocclusion cases.
The purposes of this study were to evaluate the nasolabial angle changes between closed lip position at centric occlusion and relaxed lip position at which the bite is open so that the lips do not touch and to elucidate the significance of the relaxed lip position for dentofacial diagnosis. Methods: The subjects consisted of 60 (35 Males, 25 Females) skeletal Class III malocclusion adult patients (mean age 23.3 years) with anterior crossbite. Results: In Class III malocclusion adult patients, there were significant differences in the nasolabial angle changes between closed lip position and relaxed lip position. Using the cluster analysis, the subjects were divided into three groups according to the pattern of nasolabial angle change: Group 1 (N = 27, 45%, $-8\;{\sim}\;1$), Group 2 (N = 30, 50%, $2^{\circ}\;{\sim}\;17$), and Group 3 (N = 3, 5%, over 18). Conclusion: The results showed that the pattern of the nasolabial angle change between closed lip position and relaxed lip position varies in skeletal Class III malocclusion patients. Thus, relaxed lip position should be taken into account when diagnostic records are obtained and analyzed to accurately to evaluate the facial soft tissues and predict facial esthetics after surgical-orthodontic treatment.
The purpose of this study was to find the characteristics of lateral crphalogram of skeletal class III malocclusion patients to whom orthognathic surgery was essential. For this study 37 patients with skeletal class III and going to treat or be treated orthognathic surgery(age 7-17) were selected to experimental group and 56 people with normal occlusion (age 8-13) were selected to normal group and the two groups were evaluated and statistically analyzed and the results were as follows 1. In comparison of experimental group and normal group in prepubertal group, there were significant differences in ANS-U1/Me-L1, Mx. Length/Mn. Length, S-N/Go-Me, Wits, ANB, SN-Pog, IMPA, Facial Convexity, APDI (p<0.05) 2. In comparison of experimental group and normal group in pubertal group, there were significant differences in ANS-U1/Me-L1, S-Go/N-Me, Mx.Length/Mn.Length, S-N/Go-Me, Wits, Saddle Angle, SNB, ANB, SN-Pog, IMPA, Interincisal Angle, Facial Convexity, APDI (p<0.05) 3. Among items showing characteristics of skeletal class III malocclusion, there were no significant differences between prepubertal group and pubertal group in other items except Mx. Length/Mn. Length,APDI (p<0.05) 4. The significant correlationship was the highest between Saddle Angle and SNB, SN-Pog and SNB, ANB and Facial Convexity in experimental group
