  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the human pulpal response to Dentin Bonding Desensitizer. Class V cavities were prepared on the buccal surfaces of the first premolars and Dentin Bonding Desensitizer(ALL-BOND Desensitizer, Bisco, Inc. U.S.A.) was applicated in ten experimental teeth, or ZOE(PROPAC, GC Co. TOKYO, JAPAN) cement in eight control teeth and cavities were filled with light curing glass ionomer(Fuji II LC, GC Co., TOKYO, JAPAN). At 3-day and 25-day postoperative interval. pulpal response was observed and evaluated histologically with light microscope. The results were as follows. ; 1. At 3-day postoperative interval, the control teeth were grade 1 inflammatory cell response and grade 1 connective tissue response. 2. At 25-day postoperative interval, all control teeth were grade 1 inflammatory cell response and in three control teeth grade 1 connective tissue response were observed, and one teeth showed grade 2 connective tissue response. 3. At 3-day postoperative interval, the experimental teeth were grade 1 inflammatory cell response and grade 1 connective tissue response. Below the cavity, a few inflammatory cell(PMNs) in odontoblastic layer, increased blood vessels and pulpal cells were seen and this pulpal response was similar to control teeth. 4. At 25-day postoperative interval, in four experimental teeth grade 1 inflammatory cell response and grade 1 connective tissue response were observed, and one experimental teeth showed mild inflammatory response. 5. At 3-day and 25-day postoperative interval, no reparative dentin deposition was seen. 6. Both experimental and control group, pulpal response showed difference between 3 and 25-day of postoperative interval. In control teeth, increased predentin and pulpal cells were seen and in experimental teeth, congestion of blood vessels and increased pulpal cells were seen. In conclusion, the pulpal irritation due to this Dentin Bonding Desensitizer was not severe, and it was considered that the agent was not harmful to the human pulp.

  • Chitosan nanoparticles (CNPs) and Lactococcus lactis (L. lac.) were used as adsorbents to evaluate the adsorption performance of endocrine hormones, which are phthalates, in the healthy food packages. CNPs were produced through the cross bond with tripolyphosphate (TPP), and L. lac.-CNPs were prepared through the introduction of L. lac. during the preparation. The various functional groups of all adsorbents were identified using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Adsorption isotherm and adsorption kinetic confirmed the adsorption behavior and mechanism of CNPs, L. lac. and L. lac.-CNPs. The adsorption behavior of DBP and DEP for all particles was more suitable for the Freundlich adsorption isotherm model than for the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model, which means that the surface of the particles is heterogeneous. The adsorption mechanism was more suitable for the Pseudo-2nd-order model than for the Pseudo-1st-order model. This means that due to the presence of various functional groups on the particle surface, the adsorption of DBP and DEP is dominated by chemical adsorption such as electrostatic attraction and hydrogen bonding rather than physical adsorption. Finally, it was confirmed that the preparation of CNPs and L. lac.-CNPs can be performed easily and quickly, and it could be used as a cheaper adsorbent that can effectively remove phthalates.

  • State of problem: Cement-retained implant-supported prostheses are routinely used in dentistry. The use of high strength cements has become more popular with the increasing confidence in the stability of the implant-abutment screw connection and the high survival rates of osseointegrated implants. No clinical data on retention of metal copings using CAD/CAM. To evaluate retention of metal copings using CAD/CAM system bonded to short titanium abutment with four different cements and compare retentive strength of metal copings with sandblasting or without sandblasting before cementation. Forty titanium abutment blocks were fabricated and divided into 4 groups of 10 samples each. Forty metal copings with occlusal hole to allow for retention testing were fabricated using CAD/CAM technology. The four cements were Fujicem(Fuji, Japan), Maxcem Elite(Kerr, USA), Panavia F2.0(Kurarary, Japan) and Superbond C&B(Sunmedical, Japan). The copings were cemented on the titanium abutment according to manufacture's recommendation. All samples were stored for 24h at 37oC in 100% humidity and tested for retention using universal testing machine(Instron) at a crosshead speed of 1.0mm/min. Force at retentive failure was recorded in Newton. The mode of failure was also recorded. Means and standard deviations of loads at failure were analyzed using ANOVA and Paired t-test. Statistical significance was set at P<0.05. Panavia F2.0 provided significantly higher retentive strength than Fujicem, Maxcem Elite(P<0.05). Sandblasting significantly increased bond strength(P<0.05). The mode of failure was cement remaining principally on metal copings. Within the limitation of this study, Panavia F2.0 showed significantly stronger retentive strength than Fujicem, Maxcem Elite(p<0.05). The Ranking order of the cements to retain the copings was Panavia F2.0, Fujicem = Maxcem Elite. Sandblasting significantly increased bond strength(P<0.05). The retentive strength of metal copings on implant abutment were influenced by surface roughness and type of cements.

  • Levels of total lipids in the seeds of three species of the Pinaceae family were determined and their fatty acid compositions were also analyzed by a gas-chromatograph equipped with a capillary column coated with Carbowax 20M. The results are summarized as follows: Lipid contents of the seeds amounted to 56.9% in P. koraiensis, 29.9% in P. thunbergii, and 21.2% in P. rigida. In all lipids 19${\sim}$20 fatty acid were detected and, surprisingly, fatty acids having ${\Delta}^5$-non-methylene interrupted conjugate double bond such as ${\Delta}^{5, 9}-C_{18:2},{\Delta}^{5, 9, 12}-C_{18:3}\;and\;{\Delta}^{5, 11, 14}-C_{20:3}$ occurred in appreciable amounts. In the lipids of P. koraiensis, the main component was $C_{18:2}{\omega}_6(45.0%)$, followed by $C_18:1{\omega} _9(26.9%)$ and ${\Delta}^{5, 9, 12}-C_{18:3}(14.6%)$, and then ${\Delta}^{5, 9}-C_{18:2}(2.2%)$ and ${\Delta}^{5, 11, 14}-C_{20:3}$ were also present. Levels of saturated fatty acid such as $C_{16:0}\;and\;C_{18:0}$ were as low as 7.5%. The seed oil of P. thunbergii predominantly comprised $C_{18:2}{\omega}_6(45.2%)$, and was then occupied by equal amounts ${\Delta}^{5, 9, 12}-C_{18:3}(18.1%)$ and $C_{18:1}{\omega}_9(18.1%)$. Its ${\Delta}^5, 11, 14}-C_{20:3}(5.8%)$ level was the highest in the samples tested. ${\Delta}^{5, 9}-C_{18:2}(2.8%)$ was also detected with other minor components. In the oils from the seeds of P. rigida, $C_{18:2}{\omega}_6$ was present as a main component, accompanied by $C_{18:1}{\omega}_9(21.6%)$ and ${\Delta}^{5, 9, 12}-C_{18:3}(20.3%)$. The latter showed higher level than in any other samples. A minor component corresponding to ${\Delta}^{5, 9, 12, 15}-C_{18:4}$(not confirmed by GC-Mass) occurred in P. thunbergii and P. rigida.

  • Three kinds of amylose derivatives such as: cholesteryloxycarbonated amyloses(CAMs) with degree of esterification(DE) ranging from 1.8 to 3, (6-cholesteryloxycarbonyl)pentanoated amyloses(PAMs) with DE ranging from 0.3 to 3, and fully cholesteryloxycarbonated PAMs(CPAMs) were synthesized, and their thermotropic liquid crystalline properties were investigated. CAMs with $DE{\geq}2.6$, PAM with DE=1.6 and all the CPAMs formed enantiotropic cholesteric phases, whereas PAM with $DE{\geq}2.2$ exhibited monotropic cholesteric phases. PAM with $DE{\geq}2.2$ and CPAMs with (6-cholesteryloxycarbonyl)pentanoyl DE (DS) more than 1.0 formed cholesteric phases with left-handed helical structures whose optical pitches (${\lambda}_{m'}s$) decrease with increasing temperature. However, the ${\lambda}_{m'}s$ of these samples decreased with increasing DS at the same temperature. On the other hand, CAMs, PAM with DE=1.6, and CPAM with DS=0.3 did not display reflection colors over the full cholesteric range, suggesting that the helicoidal twisting power of the cholesteryl group highly depends on the length of the spacer joining the cholesteryl group to the main chain and DS. The thermal stability and degree of order in the mesophase observed for the amylose derivatives highly depended on DE or DS. The results were discussed in terms of the difference ul the hydrogen bond, the internal plasticization, and the decoupling of the motion of side group with the main chain.

  • The rates of reaction between 4-substituted-2,6-dinitrochlorobenzenes with para-substituted anilines in methanol-acetonitrile mixtures were measured by conductometry. It was observed that the rate constant increases in the order of X = 4-$NO_2 {\gg}4-CN {\gg}4- CF_3$, where X is a substituent in the substrate. The rate constant also increases in the order of Y = p-O$CH_3{\gg}p- CH_3{\gg}H {\gg}p-Cl{\gg}m- NO_2$, where Y is a substituent in the aniline ring. Kinetic studies in the methanol-acetonitrile solvent system with various nucleophiles showed that the N-C bond forming step is making a great contribution to the overall second order rate constant. The electrophilic catalysis by methanol probably consists of the hydrogen bonding between alcoholic hydrogen and leaving chloride in the transition state. The nucleophilic catalysis by methanol may be ascribed to the formation of hydrogen bonds between alcoholic oxygen and hydrogens of amines in the transition state. All these experimental facts are supporting the operation of $S_N$Ar machanism with the second step being the rate determining. This mechanism can be successfully fitted to the PES model.

  • The adsorption and desorption of Pb, Cd, Co, Zn, Cr, Co, Ni, and Mo on the waste Undaria sp. were studied. Except for Pb. the mono adsorption rate for all heavy metals were lower than that of the heavy metals mixed. However, the adsorption capacity of the heavy metals by 1g of biosorption, in mixed heavy metals increased According to FT-IR analysis of the biosorbent after heavy metal biosorption, the replacement of the functional group by the heavy metals ions could be confirmed and the inverted peaks became larger after heavy metals adsorption. The adsorption equilibrium of heavy metals was reached in about 1 hour. The equilibrium parameters were determined based on Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. The affinity of metals on the biosorbent decreased in the following order: Pb>Cu>Cr>Cd>Co. The desorption rate decreased in the following sequence: NTA>$H_2SO_4$>HCl>EDTA. The desorption rate of heavy metals by NTA increased with increase in the concentration from 0.1 to 0.3% but the desorption rate became constant beyond 0.3%. Therefore, it represented that desorption rate of heavy metals was suitable under optimized condition ($30^{\circ}C$, pH 2 and 0.3% NTA solution) and was fast with 80% or more the uptake occurring within 10 min of contact time.

  • Confonmation of (Z)-cinnamonitrile have been studied by molecular orbital theoretically using extended Huckel theory(EHT) and CNDO/2 molecular orbital calculation methods. The results indicate that the stability of conformation is(Z)-gauch>(Z)-planar. The rate constants for alkalie hydrolysis of cinnamonitrile at pH 7.0-14.0 range have been determined by ultra-violet spectrophotometry in 50% methanol at $25^{\circ}C$ and the following rate equation which can be applied over wide pH range was obtained; $${\therefore}k=({\frac{1.41{\times}10^{-14}+1.21{\times}10^7/[H_3O^+]}{2.65{\times}10^{-7}+1.64/[H_3O^+]})+9.14{\times}10^9/[H_3O^+]$$ The rate equation reveals that, at pH 7.0-10.0, the reaction is initiated by the addition of water molecule to unsaturated cabon-carhon double bond of cinnamonitrile and ${\alpha}C-{\beta}C$ bond scission follow subsequently in neutral and alkalie media. At pH 12.0-14.0, in strong alkalie solution, that so-called Michael type nucleophilic addition that the over-all rate constants is only dependent upon the concentration of hydroxide ion occurs competitively and are very complicated. Hence, the reaction mechanism of alkalie hydrolysis of cinnamonitrile which did not carefully before can be fully explained.

  • Topical fluoride application for children is a widely peformed procedure in the field of pediatric dentistry to prevent dental caries. However, it is recently recognized as having some unwanted effects on several esthetic restorative materials as it roughens the surface of the restorative materials. The aim of this study was to evaluate the surface changes in composite resins to topical fluoride. Composite resins(Z $250^{(R)}$, Ultraseal $XT^{(R)}$ Filtek $flow^{(R)}$ $Revolution^{(R)}$, $Denfil^{(R)}$) in topical fluoride agents were immersed and their surface roughness, weight loss and SEM were evaluated. The results were as follows : 1. The 4 minutes-immersion groups showed more roughened surface than 1 minute-immersion groups and the control groups showed the smoothest surface among all the materials, and there was statistically significant difference except the revolution between the groups. 2. There was no significant difference between the 1 minute-immersion groups and 4 minutes-immersion groups in weight loss. 3. The experimental group treated with topical fluoride gel showed the generally mere roughened surface than control group in the SEM findings.

  • The reaction rates of substituted 6-chloroquinoline with p-substituted benzoyichorides $p-CH_3,$ p-H, $p-NO_2$ have been measured by conductometry in acetonitrile, and the constants are determined at various temperatures (10, 15, 20, $25^{\circ}C$) and pressures (1, 200, 500, 1000 bar). From the values of rate constants, the activation parameters (Ea, ${\Delta}V^{\neq}$, ${\Delta}H^{\neq}$, ${\Delta}S^{\neq}$, ${\Delta}G^{\neq}$) and the pressure dependence of Hammett p values were determined. The rate constants increased with increasing temperatures and pressures, and are further increased to introduction to the electron donor substiuents in substrate $(p-NO_2)$ with 6-chloroqinoline. When the activation volume and the activation entropy are all negative And the Hammett p values are positive for the substrate over the pressure and temperature range studied. The results of kinetic studies for pressure and substituent show that thease reactions proceed in typical $S_N2$ reaction mechanism and "associative $S_N2$" in bond formation favored with increasing pressures.
