  • The present study demonstrates the effect of raw powder on the pore structure of porous W-Ni prepared by freeze drying of camphene-based slurries and sintering process. The reduction behavior of $WO_3$ and $WO_3-NiO$ powders is analyzed by a temperature programmed reduction method in Ar-10% H2 atmosphere. After heat treatment in hydrogen atmosphere, $WO_3-NiO$ powder mixture is completely converted to metallic W without any reaction phases. Camphene slurries with oxide powders are frozen at $-30^{\circ}C$, and pores in the frozen specimens are generated by sublimation of the camphene during drying in air. The green bodies are hydrogen-reduced at $800^{\circ}C$ and sintered at $1000^{\circ}C$ for 1 h. The sintered samples show large and aligned parallel pores to the camphene growth direction, and small pores in the internal wall of large pores. The strut between large pores, prepared from pure $WO_3$ powder, consists of very fine particles with partially necking between the particles. In contrast, the strut densification is clearly observed in the Ni-added W sample due to the enhanced mass transport in activation sintering.

  • Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is an important noninvasive medical imaging technique that can reveal subsurface structures of biological tissue. OCT has demonstrated a good correlation with histology in sufficient resolution to identify morphological changes in articular cartilage to differentiate normal through progressive stages of degenerative joint disease. Current OCT systems provide individual cross-sectional images that are representative of the tissue directly under the scanning beam, but they may not fully demonstrate the degree of degeneration occurring within a region of a joint surface. For a full understanding of the nature and degree of cartilage degeneration within a joint, multiple OCT images must be obtained and an overall assessment of the joint surmised from multiple individual images. This study presents frequency domain three-dimensional (3-D) OCT imaging of degenerative joint cartilage extracted from bovine knees. The 3-D OCT imaging of articular cartilage enables the assembly of 126 individual, adjacent, rapid scanned OCT images into a full 3-D image representation of the tissue scanned, or these may be viewed in a progression of successive individual two-dimensional (2-D) OCT images arranged in 3-D orientation. A fiber-based frequency domain OCT system that provides cross-sectional images was used to acquire 126 successive adjacent images for a sample volume of $6{\times}3.2{\times}2.5\;mm^3$. The axial resolution was $8\;{\mu}m$ in air. The 3-D OCT was able to demonstrate surface topography and subsurface disruption of articular cartilage consistent with the gross image as well as with histological cross-sections of the specimen. The 3-D OCT volumetric imaging of articular cartilage provides an enhanced appreciation and better understanding of regional degenerative joint disease than may be realized by individual 2-D OCT sectional images.

  • This study analyzed flame growth characteristics and carbonization patterns when floor materials were burned vertically using a needle flame produced for this study. It was found that PVC flooring was fire retardant and the area under direct flame contracted inward. Vertical combustion causes solidification in the form of a lump at the bottom and also generates soot in a pattern that progresses upwards. This study found that laminated flooring exhibited no fire retarding characteristics and that the laminated layer of its upper surface was destroyed by fire, causing irregular delamination. The carbonization ranges at the left and right sides were determined to be symmetrical. A vertical combustion test of a sample carpet showed that it exhibited no fire-retarding characteristics. It was observed that if heat accumulated in the carpet, the flame formed an ascending air current, and that when flammable materials were present around the flame, they further accelerated the diffusion of the flame. The carbonization pattern at the carpet surface exposed to direct flame revealed that the carpet surface had melted and had flown downwards and that many tiny holes formed on it.

  • The presence of volatile organic compounds (VOC), produced and released from both anthropogenic and natural sources, can accelerate the degradation of air quality in the surrounding area. In this study, we investigated the emission concentrations of VOC based on a total of 115 sample analysis made from 47 companies (representing 17 types of industry) at the Ban Wall industrial complex (Jun. 2004 to Jan. 2005). Through a statistical analysis of these measurement data, we inspected the emission characteristics of VOC in relation with industrial type and processing unit. When these data were compared each other, toluene was found to record the highest value of 423 ppb followed by ethylbenzene (68.3 ppb), m, p-xylene (43.6 ppb), o-xylene (27.2 ppb), styrene (23.9 ppb), and benzene (16.4 pub). In addition, by converting these VOC concentration data into malodor intensity, we attempted to account for their distribution patterns in terms of relative contribution to the malodor formation. The results of odor intensity conversion generally indicated that the odor intensities of individual VOC do not exceed the degree of 1. When our VOC results were compared against other odorous compounds measured concurrently, the results were highly contrasting each other. Despite relative insignificance as odorous compounds, these VOCs are generally found ubiquitously and in abundant quantities in this strong source area.

  • The value of a statistical life (VSL) plays a very important role in estimating the benefits of environmental policy. It is used, for example, as a unit of monetization of health benefits resulting from the reduction of air pollutants, which is the basis of cost-benefit analysis of policies. The VSL can be defined as the value that people of each society are willing to pay to reduce the risk of death, so the value should reflect the characteristics of its members. In this study, we apply a choice experiment with 3,081 respondents collected through a web survey were divided into two samples according to the type of questions. Among the various estimates, the most appropriate estimate of the VSL is about 1.3 billion won from 1,528 sample, which is similar to the results of the meta-analysis using estimates from prior studies conducted in Korea. In addition, this study shows that a private prevention program is preferred to reduce the risk of death from cancer rather than a public program.

  • In this study, we synthesized two different silica monoliths by using sol-gel, solvent exchange, surface modification, ambient pressure drying processes, and surfactant-based templating technique followed by calcination process. All of the prepared two silica monoliths showed crack-free appearance with fairly good transparency, and furthermore were confirmed to have extremely high porosity, specific surface area, and mean pore size below 30 nm. The silica aerogel sample exhibited finer and more homogeneous nano-sized pore structure due to spring back effect caused by surface modification, which resulted in better thermal insulation performance. Based on measured thermal conductivities and theoretical relationship, multi-layered glass window system in which silica monolith prepared in this study was inserted as a middle layer was revealed to have superior thermal insulation performance compared to conventional air-inserted glass window system.

  • Volatile flavor compounds of 4 grape species (Campbell, Sheridan, Red globe, and Meoru) were identified during 3-day storage at either $4^{\circ}C$ or room temperature. Each sample was analyzed by solid-phase micro-extraction (SPME) method combined with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Also electronic nose composed of 12 different metal oxide sensors was used to differentiate flavors of grapes. Sensitivities (delta $R_{gas}/R_{air}$) of sensors from electronic nose were obtained by principal component analysis (PCA). Proportion of the first principal component was 99.30% at $4^{\circ}C$ and 99.36% at room temperature, respectively. In our result, flavor patterns of grape can be differentiated according to the storage period. The major volatile flavor compounds were 1-hexanol, hexanoic acid and its ethyl ester, and phenylethyl alcohol with the presence of butanoic acid and its ethyl ester, acetic acid, benzeneacetic acid and its ethyl ester.

  • This study is for the Kyungduk-Dan(as a altar of Milsung-Daegun) and The Manun-Jae the characteristics(lay out and planning, window patterns, structure, materials) of the the Korean traditional house during the modern era. Before Manun-Jae was used for the house. The Kyungduck-Dan was constructed in August according to the Lunar Calender in 1927. The Manun-Jae(house for Ki-hun Kang, millionaire ) was completed in 1924. Modern Architectures brought to Korea with the bricks, the tiles, the flash doors, the plate grasses, the brass hardwares. These architectural material was used in positive. During the construction of Manun-Jae in 1924, it happened the architectural exchage among a korean, a chinese and a japanese constructor. Though using the air exhaust valve at the kitchen of Ukyung-Kak( old Anchae), it could be assume that the modern convenience and the improvement of residential environments was considered at that period during the construction of Manun-Jae. That construction was elected with the brick($222mm{\times}106mm{\times}50mm$), the chinese colored tile and plate glass such a modem materials. The new shape of the korean lattice window and the wooden flash-door with glass was used. In Ukyung-Kak, the Chan-Maru(service space) and the kitchen such as a service space or concise utility zone was organically connected. Especially, considered the domesitic activity and circulation, the western kitchen sink and the Chan-Maru(service space) was rationally placed. At the Manun-Jae and the Kyungduck-Dan, the architectural characteristic is that the new shape of windows was used. The lattice window at the Ondol room of Ukyung-Kak, was rgadually added the plate glass and the wood plate. The lattice window with the grid shape at kitchen of that building was adapted japanese grid lattice window in korea at that period. It is the sample that korean traditional house was typically influenced from the japanese resident culture. The Manun-Jae and the Kyungduck-Dan as the modern house kept the form of korean traditional architecture, and was partially adapted a modern characteristic space and modern architectural materials. During the japanese occupancy, these residence can be showed the transition in formally.

  • To improve heating characteristics of graphite fibers, graphite fibers were copper-plated by electroless plating. The Cu-plated graphite fibers were investigated by thermos-gravimetric analysis in air to calculate quantities of copper on surface of graphite fiber according to plating time. Also, the surface temperature with applied voltage was observed by thermos-graphic camera using a strand of graphite fiber. According to the increment of plating time, the higher quantities of plated copper on graphite fiber were obtained. The electric conductivity of plated graphite fiber for 20 minutes was resulted in 1594.3 S/cm, and surface temperature of this sample showed the maximum temperature $57.2^{\circ}C$. These result could be attributed that copper having great electric conductivity are growing on graphite fiber and followed improving heating characteristics.

  • The lung diseases classifying as one of the six incurable diseases in modern days are caused mostly by smoking and air pollution. Such causes the lung function damages, and results in malfunction of the exchange of carbon dioxide and oxygen in an alveolus, which the interest is augment with risk diseases of life prolongation. With this in the paper, we proposed a diagnosis method of lung diseases by applying parameters of voice analysis aiming at the getting the voice feature extraction. Firstly, we sampled the voice data from patients and normal persons in the same age and sex, and made two sample groups from them. Also, we conducted an analysis by applying the various parameters of voice analysis through the collected voice data. The relational significance between the patient and normal groups can be evaluated in terms of speech rates and intensity as a part of analized parameters. In conclusion, the patient group has shown slower speech rates and bigger intensity than the normal group. With this, we propose the method of voice feature extraction for lung diseases.
