  • There are few studies reporting optimal waist circumference that can be utilized to prevent the incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD). We evaluated the association of waist circumference and waist and hip circumference ratio (WHR) with incident cases of CVD developed over 6 years in a population-based prospective study including Korean adults. Analyses for receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curve were performed with data for 1,733 men and 1,579 women who were aged 40 to 69 years and were free of a physician-diagnosis of CVD at baseline. Information on the diagnosis of CVD was periodically reported using interviewer-administered questionnaires and anthropometric measures were obtained by biennial health examinations. We newly identified 77 cases of CVD during a follow-up period between 2003 and 2008. On the basis of measures of diagnostic accuracy including minimum distance to ROC curve and Youden index, waist circumference of 85 cm for men, in particular for male nonsmokers, and of 80 cm for women and WHR of 0.88 to 0.90 for men and of 0.83 for women were found to be optimal cutoff points to identify individuals at CVD risks. The study also found that the use of the suggested optimal values for waist circumference show higher sensitivity and lower specificity compared with 90 cm for men and 85 cm for women, which are waist cutoff points given by the Korean Society for the Study of Obesity to define abdominal obesity for Korean adults. Although lower cutoff points of waist circumference (83 cm) and WHR (0.87) were observed to be optimal for male smokers compared with male nonsmokers, whether suggesting waist cutoff points specific to smokers is needed warrants further studies. After taking into account other cardiovascular risk factors including smoking, men with waist circumference of 85 cm or greater and women with 80 cm or greater were at an increased risk of CVD. Thus, these cutoff points of waist circumference may be able to capture more individuals at CVD risks contributing to the prevention of future development of CVD.

  • The goal of this article is to estimate the change in plasma catecholamine when ST-36 (Leg Three Li) and HT-7 (Spirit Gate) among the meridian points were stimulated for the group of the young and the old, using SSP therapy, thereby clarifying its effects on the responses of catecholamine that generates various physiological effects on the body, in particular, the effects on catecholamine, in the senile body, thereby providing its availability for physical therapy for the old, which is now the major concern of the society. As for research subjects, a total of 10 healthy male and female adults in their twenties were selected as the group of the young, and 10 old male and female, aged over 60, as the group of the old. The findings are as follows: When SSP stimuli were applied to ST-36 and HT-7, as for the change in the content of plasma catecholamine for the group of the young, norepinephrine significantly increased from $309.40{\pm}23.81pg/ml$ before stimulation to $374.90{\pm}35.31pg/ml$ 20 minutes later and to $406.70{\pm}42.43pg/ml$ 40 minutes later (P < 0.05); epinephrine significantly increased from $100.70{\pm}28.55pg/ml$ before stimulation to $95.70{\pm}24.16pg/ml$ 20 minutes later and to $128.80{\pm}25.02pg/ml$ 40 minutes later (P < 0.05); and dopamine showed no significant differences as its content was $245.20{\pm}40.01pg/ml$ before stimulation, $233.50{\pm}59.56pg/ml$ 20 minutes later and $250.90{\pm}56.13pg/ml$ 40 minutes later.

  • In the laboratory study, the toxicities of chlorpyrifos-methyl, chlorpyrifos, etofenprox, etofenprox+PAF' and deltamethrin for different larval instars of S. litura decreased significantly as larvae aged. LCso values for chlorpyrifos- methyl and chlorpyrifos increased significantly from 3rd instar larvae, while those for etofenprox+PAP and deltamethrin-increased from 2nd instar larvae. In pot study, no significant differences in control efficacy were observed among each treated plots and over 90% control efficacy at 5 d after treatment was obtained in all of the treated plots, except treatment with deltamethrin. Therefore four insecticides excluding deltamethrin will be effective for controlling S. litura. However, it will be probably important to select appropriate insecticides and decide a proper time of treatment because the developmental stage is a significant factor in deciding insecticide efficacy because various developmental stages of the tobacco cutworm inhibit in fields.

  • This research was conducted to design and develop a wired monitoring system for judging if sick or dead layers (SDL) exist in multi-tier layers battery (MLB) by machine vision, and to analyze its performance. In this study, 20 Brown Leghorn (Hi-Brown) layers aged 37 weeks old, were used as the experimental animals. The intensity of concern paid by layers on feed was over 90% during 5 minutes and 30 seconds after providing feed, and normal layers (NL) had been standing to take feed for that period. Therefore, in this study, the optimal judging time was set by this test result. The wired monitoring system developed was consisted of a driving device for carrying machine vision systems, a control program, a RS232 to RS485 convertor, an automatic positioning system, and an image capture system. An image processing algorithm was developed to find SDL in MLB by the processes of binary processing, erosion, expansion, labeling, and reckoning central coordinate of the captured images. The optimal velocity for driving unit was set up as 0.13 m/s by the test results for wired monitoring system, and the proximity switch was controlled not to be operated for 1.0 second after first image captured. The wired monitoring system developed was tested to evaluate the remote monitoring performance at lab-scale laying hen house. Results showed that its judgement success.ate on normal cage (without SDL) was 87% and that on abnormal cage (with SDL) was 90%, respectively. Therefore, it would be concluded that the wired monitoring system developed in this study was well suited to the purpose of this study.
