  • The purpose of the study was to investigate social support, depression, drinking and smoking in college and working females. The convenience sample consisted of 169 college females and 133 working females. Data were collected from March to May, 2000. Social support was measured by the 6-item Social Support Questionnaire which assesses the size of the emotional social support network and satisfaction with social support. The Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression scale was utilized to measure the level of depression symptoms. The average number of drinks and cigarettes smoked per week during the previous month was assessed. Results indicated that college students had more social support than working females. However, there were no significant differences in satisfaction with their support, depression, drinking and smoking between two groups. College females who smoked cigarettes were more depressed and had less social support than those who did not smoke. Also college females who drank alcohol were more depressed than those who did not drink during the previous month. However, the level of social support and depression were not associated with drinking and smoking among working females. Based on the results, it is suggested the application of various interventions to deal with drinking and smoking behavior among college and working females.

To investigate the influencing factors on SNS addiction tendency of college students, we surveyed 330 college students at universities in the metropolitan area through offline and online questionnaires, and analyzed 271 valid ones. Frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, variance analysis, Pearson correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis were performed. The results of the analysis are as follows. First, 87.4% of college students used SNS, and the most used SNS was 'Facebook (82.3%)'. The most frequent use of SNS per day was 'over 1 hour ~ less than 2 hours (24.7%)'. Second, women had a significantly higher SNS addiction tendency than men. Third, self-esteem and SNS addiction tendency showed significant negative correlation. Fourth, attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance were positively correlated with SNS addiction tendency. Fifth, the self-esteem of college students affects negatively on the SNS addiction tendency and only the attachment anxiety among attachment instability affects the addiction tendency. Finally, we discussed the risk of SNS addiction according to the characteristics of university students.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a nursing education program for hyperglycemia patient care using standardized patients. Methods: This study used a nonequivalent control group pre-test and post-test non-synchronized design. A total of 50 senior university nursing students who had completed an adult nursing course participated in this study (experimental group, n=24; control group, n=26). This nursing education program was developed according to the stages of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The collected data were analyzed using χ2 -test, Fisher's exact test, independent t-test, paired t-test, and repeated measure ANOVA. Results: Significant differences were shown between the experimental and control groups in clinical performance ability (F=277.41, p<.001), communication skills (F=47.18, p<.001), self-efficacy (F=3.81, p=.031), and learning satisfaction (t=2.25, p=.033). Problem-solving ability was not statistically significant between the groups. Conclusion: The nursing education program for hyperglycemia patient care using standardized patients was effective in improving nursing students' clinical performance ability, communication skills, and learning satisfaction. Therefore, it is proposed that the education program developed in this study be used as part of an education program to enhance nursing students' abilities in caring for hyperglycemia patients.
