Objectives: To investigate the relationship between experience of hunger in childhood or adolescence and diabetes mellitus in old age. Methods: Stratified national samples of 421 men and 554 women aged 60-89 in South Korea were analyzed. Diabetes diagnosed by a doctor was used as the dependent variable. Experience of hunger in childhood was assessed with the question, "In your childhood, have you ever gone hungry with skipping a meal?" and "In your childhood, have you ever eaten porridge or some bran cake as main dish instead of rice because of lack of food?" Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated by multiple logistic regressions. Results: ORs of diabetes by experience of hunger in childhood were 1.64(95% CI 0.95-2.83) for men and 1.58(95% CI 1.01-2.47) for women. Significant association of experience of hunger in childhood with prevalence of diabetes persisted in men after adjustment for adulthood and old age socioeconomic position indicators and other risk factors(OR 1.88(95% CI 1.04-3.41)). The effect of experience of hunger in 10-19 years was more prominent than that in less than 10 years in both gender. Conclusion: Experience of hunger in childhood or adolescence may increase the risk of diabetes in Korean elders.
The pharmacokinetic of tolbutamide was studied after the oral administration to normal rabbits or rabbits with mild to medium folate-induced renal failure. The plasma concentrations of tolbutamide were significantly elevated (p<0.05) during 9 to 24 h in rabbits with mild or medium folate-induced renal failure. Consequently, the area under the plasma concentration-time curves (AUC) was significantly higher in mild (p<0.05) and medium (p<0.01) folate-induced renal failure rabbits (i.e., 2906 $\mu$g/mL$.$h for mild renal failure and 4074 $\mu$g/mL$.$h for moderate renal failure) than that in normal rabbits (i.e., 2295 $\mu$g/mL$.$h). The cumulative urinary excretion of tolbutamide was significantly depressed (p<0.05) in medium folate-induced renal failure rabbits (i.e., 3.3 mg) compared with that in normal rabbits (i.e., 5.9 mg). The elimination rate constant (Kel) of tolbutamide was significantly decreased in medium renal failure rabbits (i.e., 0.027 $h^{-1}$) than that in normal rabbits (i.e., 0.044 $h^{-1}$ ); As a result, the terminal half-life of tolbutamide in medium folate-induced renal failure rabbits (i.e., 25.5 h) was significantly longer (p<0.01) than that in normal rabbits (i.e., 15.7 h). The change in pharmacokinetic parameters is consistent with the hypothesis that the alteration is mediated by the depressed metabolic elimination of the drug by the induction of renal failure. Therefore, these observations indicated that the dosage adjustment may be necessary for tolbutamide in patients with renal insufficiency.

Due to a decrease in the number of college prep students which was triggered by the low birth rate since 1990, it is predicted, beginning 2016, that the entrance quota for colleges will exceed the number of applicants for college admissions. This serious imbalance between supply and demand raises serious problems for the regional universities, many of which have already been struggling to recruit new students and even considered closing down the schools. In an effort to securing best high school students, many of the schools have been developing various unique and specialized selectional processes for the applicants. In this research, through a statistical analysis of special admission processes for vocational high school students who were admitted to a regional state-run university (University A), I tried to find a way to effectively deal with the student management. Statistically analyzing these first-year students' enrollment and their adjustment processes as well as the departmental relationships and gender differences, I tried to find some better ways to secure good applicants. It is expected that this study will not only be utilized as guide to adopt a way to bypass the enrollment quota in order to secure talented students but also be served as a reference that will help the students adapt themselves to school life until they graduate. It is also expected that this study will be expanded in such a way as to compare it with other models and even develop a new type of college entrance system that would fit future college admission policies.

Fish-meat gel is being produced mostly relying on surimi and raw materials imported from Southeast Asia and North America and present in small amount in local markets. In this study, common farmed local fishes were examined as stable and reliable sources of surimi for fish-meat gel production. For testing, five main farmed-fish of Korea, namely; Bastard halibut (Paralichthys olivaceus), Red sea bream (Pagrus major), Korean rockfish (Sebastes schlegeli), Common mulle (Mugil cephalus), and Finespotted flounder (Pleuronichthys cornutus) were used following a traditional washing process. The quality of the surimi was determined by the values of water content, whiteness index, gel strength and impurity. Accordingly, fish-meat gel and surimi quality experiments were carried out by measuring compressive and texture properties, expressible moisture content, Hunter color scale values and SDS-page protein patterns. Also gel characteristics were compared with that of FA and RA grade surimi (Alaska Pollock). Fish-meat gels were prepared by salt mincing the farmed-fish surimi with NaCl (2% w/w) and moisture adjustment to 84% by ice water adding. Prepared fish-meat paste was filled into 20-25 cm long polyvinylidene chloride casings and heated at 90℃ for 20 min. The whiteness values of fish-meat gels produced from surimi were increased by using farmed-fish and became comparable to that of FA Alaska Pollock gel. Among all tested farmed-fish, P. olivaceus and P. major exhibited better properties than RA Alaska Pollock and similar properties to FA Alaska Pollock. Therefore, current data suggests that fish farming can be an efficient and sustainable fish-meat source for fish-meat gel production in Korea.
Objectives : Evidence for an effect of rerroductive factors on colorectal carcinogenesis is not yet consistent. Little research has been conducted to investigate whether reproductive factors were associated with colorectal adenomas that are the precursors of colorecta1 cancer, We evaluated the relationships between reproductive factors and the degree of dysplasia of the colorectal adenoma and cancer as colorectal adenoma-carcinoma sequence. Methods : For this study, 241 adenoma cases with histopathologically confirmed incident colorectal adenoma, 76 cancer cases with colorectal cancer and 1677 controls were collected from Our Lady of Mercy Hospital, The Catholic University of Korea, during 1994-1999. Before colonoscopy, information on demographic characteristics, reproductive factors, life style habits and dietary intake were obtained by interviewed questionnaire. Adjusted OR and 95% CI were estimated by using polytomous logistic regression model, Potential confounders that were selected based on the goodness of fit Statistics and interaction between risk factors were considered in this adjustment. The Wald statistic was calculated to test the heterogeneity of the odds ratios for each case. Results .: Postmenopausal women with natural menopause were found to be positively associated with the risk of mild dysplasia adenoma (multivariate-adjusted OR : 2.59, 95% CI=1.1-0.2). Parity was found to be negatively associated with the risk of colorectal lancer (age-adjusted OR : 0.40, 95% CI=0.2-0.9), but did not significantly decrease the risk of colorectal cancer (multivariate-adjusted OR : 0.95, 95% CI=0.3-2.9). Me associations were seen between a9e at menarche, breast feeding, induced abortion, oral contraceptive use, menopausal types, menopausal age or hormone replacement therapy (HRT and the degree of dysplasia of the colorectal adenoma and cancer. However, none of these associations differed' significantly between the degree of dysplasia of the colorectal adenoma and cancer. Conclusions : These findings suggest that postmenopausal women with natural menopause may experience increased risk of mild dysplasia adenorna among colorectal adenoma-carcinoma sequence.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlations between ADHD, depression, anxiety, suicide risk and suicide risk of university freshmen, and to investigate factors affecting suicide risk of university freshmen. As a result, the correlation between suicide risk and ADHD, depression, and anxiety were statistically significant. The correlation between suicide risk and ADHD (r=-.411) was moderately negative, while depression (r=-.594) and anxiety (r=-.563) were high negative correlations. According to the logistic regression analysis, the significant factors affecting suicide risk of college freshmen were ADHD, depression, and anxiety. In the abnormal group of variables, ADHD (OR=3.17; 95% CI 1.36-7.38), depression (OR=10.80; 95% CI 4.32-27.02) and anxiety (OR=3.39; 95% CI 1.55-7.41) were identified as influencing factors. As such, suicide risk groups of college freshmen are highly associated with ADHD, depression, and anxiety. Therefore, personal counseling and regular psychological tests of college freshmen will be provided to the high-risk suicide program to help students' psychological stability and adjustment to school life.
Tacrolimus, an immunosuppressant prescribed against graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) in patients with allogeneichematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), is affected to change its pharmacokinetic properties by various factors. For this reason, it is needed a close monitoring to adjust dosage amount in order to optimize the blood concentration of tacrolimus is located within the effective range. According to our in-house study, 62% of HSCT-patients were needed dosage-adjustment and it is necessary to optimize the current immunosuppressive regimen in clinical settings. A retrospective study was designed to evaluate the dosing regimen (converting ratio of IV:PO=1:4) of tacrolimus in HSCT patients (n=62). After collecting data from patient's profile and medical record, pharmacokinetic parameters were calculate and compared between the estimated and the actual values in the selected subjects (n=58). It was found that the bioavailabilty (BA) of oral tacrolimus was 40.5% very much different from that is known as 25%. It implies that the current protocol has a potent risk causes dose-related toxicities to the patients. Furthermore, analyses among factors demonstrated that there was no statistical significance between BA of tacrolimus and the variable factors. In the clinical perspectives, the current converting ratio of tacrolimus in patients with HSCT to be re-considered and an appropriate and optimal alternative regimen should be adopted to prevent GVHD and to increase the quality of life of patients.
This study was carried out to develop nutrition education materials for nutrient intake and the prevention of disease for the elderly and to test their effects on the health-related matters and nutrition intakes after nutrition education. The mean age of the subjects was 71.6 years old. Diet adjustment for health increased a little bit from 2.2% to 11.1% after education but with no significance. The highest reported chronic illness was hypertension. The drinking of the subjects decreased a little bit after their education but wasn't significant. There were no significant changes to the frequency of food consumption across all the items after education, but there was a small increase to the daily intake of milk and dairy products and fruits and to a balanced diet three times per day. There was a significant increase in the intake of such nutrients as energy(p<0.05), protein(p<0.01), lipid(p<0.05), phosphorus(p<0.05), sodium (p<0.05), vitamin $B_2$(p<0.05), vitamin $B_6$(p<0.05), and niacin(p<0.001) after education. Those findings show that nutrition education provided to the elderly had no clear effects on the items that required memorization such as nutrition knowledge but did have some effects on dietary life. If the nutrition education requiring memorization is provided repeatedly with data supplemented, more effective nutrition management will be possible.
The purpose of the study was to investigate the status of the nutritional education program on educational perception, facilities, contents and systems, which were focused on the school obesity education in the elementary school. A five point Likert scale was used to evaluate the importance and performance of each item in four sections of the survey and Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA; gap between importance and performance) matrix analysis was applied to determine improvement priority. The findings from IPA matrix analysis are in the following. The items of the sections to be improved intensively are recognition of parents and in-charge teacher, availability of the education place, preparation of consulting room, preparation of various teaching media, interest of an education program, meal adjustment of overweight children, combination with education and exercise, education for psychological factors, development of scientific and systematic education program and reduction of meal service duty for education. Accordingly, the IPA matrix analysis suggested that an intensive improvement area should be excessively concentrated on for better performance. The regional gap between importance and performance showed significant difference for textbook and diet of overweight children in Kyunggi-Do. There were significant differences for the government perception, dietary habits and food-life education, fast-food education, education for breakfast importance, and education of school meal indication system and method to read food nutrition indication in Chollabuk-Do. As for the age gap between importance and performance, the twenties showed significantly bigger gaps in perception of school dietitians and linking between school meals and diet education. Therefore, more proactive efforts for the education for obesity prevention are necessary to prevent childhood obesity in elementary school and to help children to possess better health throughout their entire lives.
