  • Gerrit Rietveld who is Dutch architect and furniture designer had explored the plastic abstractness based on the universality of De Stijl principle. He had tried to expand the boundary of furniture design bound to traditional form and decorative aesthetics. Beginning of 20th century, he opened the new aesthetic realm of pure and abstract value for furniture design for the first time. Through this research, the results can be summarized as follows. The characteristics of his deign are abstractness, spatial consideration and tectonic construction. The abstractness is attained by simplifying constructional material into geometrical forms such as straight line, rectangle and square. And he adopted unconventional way of construction in order to increase this abstractness. The space included in his furniture can be expressed in the new technology of joint, the visual transparency using linear material, and the destruction of corners. All these aspects harmoniously helped the feeling of architectural space of flow. Through the exposed frame of furniture, Rietveld emphasized on the tectonic construction by methodological treatment such as piling-up or overlapping material. The characteristics of Gerrit Rietveld's design are abstract, spatial and tectonic. These aesthetical tendencies could be understood as a junction between De Stijl's principles and modern architecture's spatial preferences-flow and extension of space-.

  • The purpose of this study is to consider the changes of the early twentieth century fashion in pursuit of mechanical beauty. As for the research methodology, literature survey has been undertaken. The results of this study are as following. In early twentieth century, fashion concept on the expression of mechanical beauty was considered as abstractness, atypicality, and high-tech. The abstractness of fashion was expressed by geometrical purity, box silhouette, moderate color, and cheap materials in association with mechanical reasonability and efficiency. The atypicality of fashion was connected progressive taste motivated by mechanical dynamic effect. This tendency of dress was constructed technically in response with the movement of body and totally transgressed conventional notions of clothing. The high-tech of fashion was presented by geometrical forms and metal materials in relation with the future-oriented utopia and the harmony between human and machine.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze science gifted students' creativity subscales. The Torrance Tests of Creativity Thinking(TTCT) were administered to 385 science gifted students from 2006 to 2010 for this study. The results were as follows: First, fluency correlated highly with originality, and elaboration also highly correlated with abstractness of titles. All of the correlation coefficients of the variables with resistance to premature closure were high. Second, the elaboration scores were higher than other variables, and abstractness of titles scores and resistance to premature closure scores were lower than other variables regardless of regions and gender. There was no significant difference according to regions, but the elaboration scores of female science gifted students were significantly higher than male science gifted students'. The fluency scores were the most influential factor to the creativity index among the creativity subscale scores. Third, after completing the science gifted program, students showed significant difference in fluency scores, abstractness of titles scores, and resistance to premature closure scores; however, they showed no difference in originality scores and elaboration scores.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate sex differences in creativity among young children and differences in creativity as a function of the questioning patterns of teachers. The subjects were 4 teachers and 133 five-year-old children (63 boys and 70 girls). The questioning of teachers were categorized into divergent vs. convergent patterns by 3 trained observers. The TTCT (Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking) was administered to the subjects. Creativity scores on fluency, elaboration, originality, and abstractness of titles differed by questioning patterns. Girls' elaboration scores were higher than boys' as a function of teachers' divergent questioning patterns. Boys' abstractness of titles was higher than girls' as a function of teacher's convergent questioning patterns.

  • This study aims to investigate the representation patterns used by elementary teachers and their meaning-making process in electromagnetic experiments. In particular, we analyzed the representations depending on three levels of their abstractness: enactive representation (action based), iconic representation (image based) and symbolic representation (language based). For this, four experiment activities of two teachers were analyzed and the results are as follows. First, as an overall pattern of representation, an experiment subject is presented as the form of symbolic representation and the related concepts, experimental materials and methods are embodied through iconic representation. Then, through enactive representation, the actual experiments are implemented. The experimental results are primarily recorded through iconic representations and abstracted into symbolic representations to draw conclusions. The different levels of representations complement each other to expand their meanings, however, sometimes they also make inconsistent meanings among different levels. Based on these results, educational implications were discussed in terms of supporting and improving electromagnetic experiment activities.

  • Sumuk drawings are made with water and muk(墨), which are used to express the light, shade and texture of an object. The expression methods of oriental drawing can be divided into three methods: pictorialization, abstractness and realism. The method of pictorialization expresses traditional pictures or letters. Abstractness show an artist's aesthetic feeling through sprinkling, splashing and spreading diffusion of muk. The method of realism is Takbon which makes a copy painting directly from a monument by rubbing a paper with ink. Modern fashion designer attempts to develop a new Sumuk technique based on both oriental drawing style and western watercolor painting style. Rather than following the designated styles of oriental drawings and Korean drawings, new Sumuk technique colors detailed structures expressed as outlines, dots and lines or creates abstract patterns through spreading or spilling in showing theme of flowers, plants and insects. In this study, in order to develop fashion cultural products with Sumuk technique, rubbed copy of the ancient 'Emile bell Takbon' was used. For this study, with the combination of different colors and the patterns from 'Emile bell Takbon', designs for scarfs, shirts and one-piece dresses were created. These techniques enabled to express soft and strong Takbon image in simple Sumuk technique in harmony with modern trends.

  • The trend of abstract expressions has become one of the fundamental causes of the problems relating to a sense of place in modern architecture. This trend began in earnest after the era of modernism, caused by the effect of modern dualism. Before analyzing the problems of the modern trend of abstract expressions and sense of place, a fundamental review of the establishment of human environments is necessary. In this context, this study deals with the principles of the establishment of an environment based on the logic of projection between human beings and milieu, through the concept of mediance by Augustin Berque, and based on this, causes of adverse effects on the establishment of environments in modernism were verified. In addition, the last section covers the conceptual supplements required in order for the concept of mediance to become practical, overcoming its limitation of being simply theoretical. Through this analysis on the concept of mediance, it is realized that a genuine sense of place can be achieved only when architecture moves beyond the individual dimension as a simply physical object, and instead plays a role as a socially sustainable community, embracing the people and unique objects therein.

  • The main purpose of this work is to suggest a new approach to teaching general topology to undergraduate students. First, we change the order of contents. Usually, we introduce definitions, examples, theorems, and problems in this order. But, showing familiar examples of some concept of topology prior to the definition of one is the best method so far as I know from teaching experience of topology, which students feel very hard because of its abstractness. For more efficiency, mathematics-clubs each consisting of three or four students in topology course are established. This makes students very positive in topology class.
