  • This research explores the current situation and determinants of induced abortion in Korea. Using 2000 National fertility Survey by Korea Institute of Health and Social Affairs, this study finds that induced abortion rate is rapidly declining so that the role of induced abortion in determining the level of fertility has disappeared. The fundamental reason for resorting to an induced abortion for Korean women is to avoid unwanted birth. Thus, we find that induced abortion is usually taken by Korean women for the purpose of limiting family size and spacing births as in any other countries. Premarital pregnancy and economic hardship are also important reason for taking an induced abortioin, especially for the first time abortion.

  • Background: The purpose of this study is to investigate the trends on the induced abortion in Korea using social big-data and confirm whether there was time series trends and seasonal characteristics in induced abortion. Methods: From October 1, 2007 to October 24, 2016, we used Naver's data lab query, and the search word was 'induced abortion' in Korean. The average trend of each year was analyzed and the seasonality was analyzed using the cosinor model. Results: There was no significant changes in search volume of abortion during that period. Monthly search volume was the highest in May followed by the order of June and April. On the other hand, the lowest month was December followed by the order of January, and September. The cosinor analysis showed statistically significant seasonal variations (amplitude, 4.46; confidence interval, 1.46-7.47; p< 0.0036). The search volume for induced abortion gradually increased to the lowest point at the end of November and was the highest at the end of May and declined again from June. Conclusion: There has been no significant changes in induced abortion for the past nine years, and seasonal changes in induced abortion have been identified. Therefore, considering the seasonality of the intervention program for the prevention of induced abortion, it will be effective to concentrate on the induced abortion from March to May.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore essences and meaning in experiences of women who have had spontaneous abortion. Methods: A phenomenological methodology was used for the study. A total of five women with the spontaneous abortion participated in the study. In-depth interviews were done for data collection, and the data were analyzed using Colaizzi's method. Results: Five theme clusters, along with 32 sub-themes and 13 themes. The five theme clusters were: 'Waiting and expecting pregnancy', 'Desire to overcome the spontaneous abortion', 'My baby makes me cry and laugh', 'My precious baby', and 'Want to hear with sympathy and talk with you', Conclusion: The women who have had the spontaneous abortion experiences can prevent potential physical and psychological complications after miscarriage by getting education and intervention in nursing. Moreover, they may experience that negative factors of the spontaneous abortion can be turned into positive things through emotional support of family and medical teams.

  • Considerable data has been reported on the outcome of pregnancies subsequent to induced abortion, but the findings contain a great deal of inconsistency and disagreement. Most studies strongly suggest that normal deliveries are less likely to occur in subsequent pregnancies following induced abortion, in terms of gestation length, birth weight, stillbirth, and miscarriage. Other work suggests that some of the demographic and health characteristics of women who experience induced abortion are different from those women who do not; and these factors may affect the outcome of subsequent pregnancies profoundly rather than the induced abortion itself.

Data were collected from 20th September, 1999 to 28th October, 1999. The data were analyzed through the SPSS program by use of frequency, percentage, t-test, ANOVA and Scheffe test as a post hoc contrast, $x^2$-test, Pearson correlation coefficient and stepwise multiple regression. The results of the study are as follows. 1. The subject who experienced artificial abortion was 24.3% and 468% of these had experienced repeated artificial abortion. 54.4% was using the contraceptives and there was a significant difference in the contraceptives between that women wish to use and that women are really using. 2. For the opinion on the artificial abortion, 77.3% of respondents was pro-abortionists and the most acceptable reasons of pro-choice were" In case of unmarried" and "For the women's health". 3. • Purpose: After abortion, many women could have psychologic problems and physical symptoms. But in Korea, the symptoms and psychologic problems and after abortion had rarely been researched. Methods: The subjects were 29 women who visited Kangnam Korean hospital for postabortion management from May 2007 to December 2007. From questionnaire, we researched the variable symptoms after abortion and depression as Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale. Results: The 79% of patients took a rest only less than 1 week after abortion. As the rest time was shorter, the number of symptoms was higher. The frequent symptoms were related to the dysfunction of autonomic nerve system and the circulating system. The patients after abortion had high Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale scores, the mean score was $13.33{\pm}7.11$. The high EPDS scores and the number of symptoms was related with methods of abortion and age. Conclusions: Postabortal symptoms are related with physical symptoms and depression. So psychological evaluation would be needed. And for prevention of postabortal symptoms, the adequate rest time would be demanded after abortion.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to provide basic data for suggesting the realistic plan for the prevention of induced abortion. We performed an analysis of a recognition and actual conditions of the induced abortion according to the marital status. Methods: Participants were 681 persons of 20 years of age or older who lived in 7 cities and provinces. The data was collected with a structured questionnaire. For data analysis, Chi-square test, t-test and stepwise discriminant analysis were utilized. Results: The results were as follows. When degrees of recognition were analyzed according to the marital status, married were found to have higher levels of recognition of induced abortion than unmarried. From comparison of the recognition, there were significant differences between married and unmarried in terms of the recognition of the law, premarital sex, sex consciousness, intention of induced abortion, knowledge of contraception. Conclusion: The above results showed that marital status was strongly related to the recognition of induced abortion. And measures for preventing the induced abortion, specially about 20 percents of risky unmarried, should be focused.

  • The objective of this study was to determine the cause and prevalence of bovine abortion and stillbirth in Kyungi-do area. Seventy three bovine fetuses were collected from farms and submitted to the College of Veterinary Medicine, Seoul National University. Submitted fetuses were evaluated during a 4-month period (July to November, 1999) for pathological lesion, tissue protozoa, bacteria and viral infection. The average proportion of abortions was decreased with parity in 73 abortion heifers and cows. Monthly incidence rate of bovine abortion was not different in this study. In fetuses from 90 to 282 days gestation, the majority were between 150 and 250 days gestation(58%). The cause of abortion or stillbirth was determined in 51% of the cases examined. In 15(21%) of the fetus, neosporosis were diagnosed by pathological findings. In three (4%) additional fetuses in three additional fetuses, suspected Neosporosis by pathological lesion, and in 3 (4%) fetuses examined Neopsorosis were diagnosed in 15 feturses and in 3 fetuses, Neosporosis was suspected by pathological legions. Neosporosis / viral infection were diagnosed in three additional fetuses). Miscellaneous bacterial infection, BVDV, iatrogenic cause, Neosporosis / IBRV / BVDV, miscellaneous viral, IBRV/BVDV and others were 3(4%), 3(4%), 2(3%), 2(3%), 1(1%), 1(%) and 9(12%) respectively. The cause and incidence of bovine abortion in different area in Kyungi-do was not different in this study.
