  • This paper suggests the online method to identify normal and abnormal state of water quality on the ocean USN. To define normal of the ocean water quality, we utilize the negative selection algorithm of artificial immunity system which has self and nonself identification characteristics. To distinguish abnormal status, normal state set of the ocean water quality needs to be defined. For this purpose, we generate normal state set base on mutations of each data and mutation of the data as logical product. This mutated normal (or self) sets used to identify abnormal status of the water quality. We represent the experimental result about mutated self set with the Gaussian function. Through setting the method on the ocean sensor logger, we can monitor whether the ocean water quality is normal or abnormal state by online.

  • In the Hankyung-Daejeong watersheds of western Jeju Island, several groundwater wells showed abnormal measurements of high electrical conductivity (EC) and pH. To identify the causes of this abnormal water quality, we conducted borehole imaging, vertical EC logging, groundwater quality analysis, and SEM-EDS analysis of white suspended matter in the well. Most of the wells showing abnormal water quality had well-grouting below the water table, with borehole EC values ranging from 300 to 10,000 μS/cm. The wells exhibited higher ion concentrations compared to nearby wells and had a high pH range of 8.2 to 12.7, indicating a slightly to strong alkalinity. The primary components of the white-colored suspended matter were identified as oxygen and magnesium. These findings suggest that the abnormal water quality of the study wells is caused by the cement mortar used for grouting during well construction rather than by nitrate contamination or seawater intrusion. To prevent the influence of well-grouting on water quality during groundwater well development, an establishment of standards for groundwater development and utilization facilities is needed.

  • Wastewater treatment plants are constantly exposed to influent wastewater that is constantly changing. This poses a major challenge to the operation of the plants. It is crucial to have a rapid and accurate measurement of the influent concentrations of wastewater in order to maintain and optimize treatment performance, as well as to develop energy-saving strategies. While laboratory measurements provide the highest accuracy in determining influent water quality, they are inevitably time-consuming procedures. In order to cope with the ongoing disturbances from wastewater influent, absorption-based optical measuring instruments have been developed. These instruments can detect the influent water quality in a short amount of time, improving their practicality and reliability. However, when these optical measuring instruments malfunction, the accuracy of the measured values decreases, leading to unreasonable operation of the treatment plant. This paper proposes a method for detecting anomalies in optical water quality measurement devices. The Harmony Search algorithm is used to validate the measured water quality values and detect abnormalities such as contamination or physical anomalies in the measurement apparatus. To assess the performance of the developed algorithm in detecting anomalies, validation was conducted by installing it in a field-scale wastewater treatment plant. The results consistently showed that the developed fault detection method for optical water quality measurements equipment provided acceptable results for normal, temporary abnormal, and long-term abnormal conditions.

  • It is clear that the implementation of Total Pollution Load Management (TPLM) has contributed to the improvement of river water quality in Korea. However, it is also true that the TPLM has focused on point source pollution management, with limitations in addressing non-point source pollution. This study examined the issues of the current TPLM from the perspective of non-point source pollution, which is closely related to high-flow conditions, by analyzing Load Duration Curves (LDC) using water quality and flow data collected over the past four years from 21 sub-watersheds in the Geum River Basin. Since the current TPLM is based on water quality predictions using a static water body model that applies the average flow of the dry season, we found that the reduction in loads required under actual flow conditions could be up to 140 times greater than under the reference flow condition, indicating that load amounts under high-flow conditions are not reflected. Additionally, there were abnormal correlations between discharge loads and water quality in several sub-watersheds, and illogical situations arose where compliance with allocated loads did not align with achieving the target water quality. While the causes of such abnormal and illogical situations are diverse and complex, this study highlights the need for rational reflection of non-point source loads under high-flow conditions in water quality modeling. As a solution, we propose the application of watershed models and dynamic water body models.

  • Valve in water distribution network (WDN), that controls the flow in pipes, is used to isolate a segment (a part of WDN) under abnormal water supply conditions (e.g., pipe breakage, water quality failure event). The segment isolation degrades pressure and water serviceability in neighboring area during the water service outage of the segment. Recent hydraulic and water quality failure events reported encouraging WDN valve installation based on various abnormal water supply scenarios. This study introduces a scenario-based optimal valve installation approach to optimize the number of valves, the amount of undelivered water, and a shortest water supply path indicator (i.e., Hydraulic Geodesic Index). The proposed approach is demonstrated in the valve installation of Pescara network, and the optimal valve sets are obtained under multiple scenarios and compared to the existing valve set. Pressure-driven analysis (PDA) scheme is used for a network hydraulic simulation. The optimal valve set derived from the proposed method has 19 fewer valves than the existing valve set in the network and the amount of undelivered water was also lower for the optimal valve set. Reducing the reservoir head requires a greater number of valves to achieve the similar functionality of the WDN with the optimal valve set of the original reservoir head. This study also compared the results of demand-driven analysis (DDA) and the PDA and confirmed that the latter is required for optimal valve installation.

  • Early developmental stages of Mactra chinensis were bioassayied to determin the water quality of the costal waters of Busan. The water samples were obtained at 12 stations from July 12 to July 17, 1977. Water quality evaluation was made in terms of the rates of normal development to abnormal development in three indicatory states, i. e. fertilization membrane formation, morula and trochophore larvae. The pollution degree of the waters brought from five swimming beaches was found to be highest at Haewundae followed by Songdo, Kwang-anri, Songjeong and Dadaepo with decreasing order. The highest value of the water at Haewundae was mainly due to the accidental oil spill from an oil tanker which happened on July 7, 1977. At Dongsamdong the rate of total abnormal development was $47.17\%$. This result is apparently attributable to fish byproducts discarded from a number of restaurants. At Chungmudong where a large fish-market is located, the rate of total abnormal development was $61.14\%$. At Suyeng Bay and Yongho Bay the rates of total abnormal development were $73.82\%$ and $72.90\%$ respectively. At these bays the drainage presumably contains a large amount of chemical pollutants from the industrial areas. This result shows that no organisms can normally breed in these regions.

  • A partition of water distribution network (WDN) into district metered areas (DMAs) brings the efficiency and efficacy for water network operation and management (O&M), especially in monitoring pressure and leakage. Traditionally, the DMA configurations (i.e., number, shape, and size of DMAs) are permanent and cannot be changed occasionally. This leads to changes in water quality and reduced network redundancy lowering network resilience against abnormal conditions such as water demand variability and mechanical failures. This study proposes a framework to automatically divide a WDN into dynamic DMA configurations, in which the DMA layouts can self-adapt in response to abnormal scenarios. To that aim, a complex graph theory is adopted to sectorize a WDN into multiscale DMA layouts. Then, different failure-based scenarios are investigated on the existing DMA layouts. Here, an optimization-based model is proposed to convert existing DMA layouts into dynamic layouts by considering existing valves and possibly placing new valves. The objective is to minimize the alteration of flow paths (i.e., flow direction and velocity in the pipes) while preserving the hydraulic performance of the network. The proposed method is tested on a real complex WDN for demonstration and validation of the approach.

  • In Water Distribution Systems (WDSs), can abnormal hydraulic and water quality conditions such as red-water phenomenon and leakage occur. To restore them, data is generated through various meters data to predict and detect. However, in the case of leakage if difficult to detect unless direct exploration is performed. Among them, unreported leakage, are not seen visually and account for the most considerable volumes of leakage, which leads to economic loss. Bur direct exploration is limited through on site conditions such as securing professional manpower. In this paper, leakage volumes and location were randomly generated for the WDS, which was assumed to be calibrated, and it was detected through a deep learning model. For abnormal data generation, the leakage was simulated using the emitter coefficient, and leakage detection was successfully performed through the generated abnormal data and normal data.

  • As using public monitoring data, analysing a trends of water quality change, establishing a criteria to determine abnormal status and constructing a regression model that can predict Chlorophyll-a, an indicator of eutrophication, was studied. Accordingly, the three freshwater lakes were selected, approximately 20 years of water quality monitoring data were analyzed for periodic changes in water quality each year using regression analysis, and a method for determining abnormalities was presented by the standard deviation at confidence level 95%. By calculating the temporal change rate of Chlorophyll-a from irregular observed data, analyzing correlations between the rate and other water quality items, and constructing regression models, a method to predict changes in Chlorophyll-a was presented. The results of this study are expected to contribute to freshwater lake water quality management as an approximate water quality prediction method using the statistical model.
