3D reconstruction of a human face from an image sequence remains an important problem in computer vision. We propose a method, based on a factorization algorithm, that reconstructs a 3D face model from short image sequences exhibiting rotational motion. Factorization algorithms can recover structure and motion simultaneously from one image sequence, but they usually require that all feature points be well tracked. Under rotational motion, however, feature tracking often fails due to occlusion and frame out of features. Additionally, the paucity of images may make feature tracking more difficult or decrease reconstruction accuracy. The proposed 3D reconstruction approach can handle short image sequences exhibiting rotational motion wherein feature points are likely to be missing. We implement the proposal as a reconstruction method; it employs image sequence division and a feature tracking method that uses Active Appearance Models to avoid the failure of feature tracking. Experiments conducted on an image sequence of a human face demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

The aim this master thesis is to find out if is possible to Integrate haptic hardware support in the source 3D game engine Crystal Space. Integrating haptic support would make it possible to get a haptic representation of 3D geometry in Crystal Space and therefore take advantage of all the benefits a 3D game engine provides, when building haptic applications, An implementation of the support should be as low-cost as Possible by taking advantage of available source haptic API alternatives. The thesis report presents an evaluation of available haptic APIs and comes up with a design and an implementation. The solution has been implemented as a Crystal Space plugin by using modified parts of the e-Touch open module API. The plugin makes it possible to utilize the Phantom haptic device to touch and feel the 3D environments in a Crystal Space application. Two demo applications have also been constructed to show the capabilities of the plugin.
This paper introduces a new motion-synthesis technique for animating multiple characters. At a high level, we introduce a hub-sub-control-point scheme that automatically generates many different spline curves from a user scribble. Then, each spline curve becomes a trajectory along which a 3D character moves. Based on the given curves, our algorithm synthesizes motions using a cyclic motion. In this process, space-time warp curves, which are time-warp curves, are embedded in the 3D environment to control the speed of the motions. Since the space-time warp curve represents a trajectory over the time domain, it enables us to verify whether the trajectory causes any collisions between characters by simply checking whether two space-time warp curves intersect. In addition, it is possible to edit space-time warp curves at run time to change the speed of the characters. We use several experiments to demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can efficiently synthesize a group of character motions. Our method creates collision-avoiding trajectories ten times faster than those created manually.
Three-dimensional (3D) memories using through-silicon vias (TSVs) as vertical buses across memory layers will likely be the first commercial application of 3D integrated circuit technology. The memory dies to stack together in a 3D memory are selected by a die-selection method. The conventional die-selection methods do not result in a high-enough yields of 3D memories because 3D memories are typically composed of known-good-dies (KGDs), which are repaired using self-contained redundancies. In 3D memory, redundancy sharing between neighboring vertical memory dies using TSVs is an effective strategy for yield enhancement. With the redundancy sharing strategy, a known-bad-die (KBD) possibly becomes a KGD after bonding. In this paper, we propose a novel die-selection method using KBDs as well as KGDs for yield enhancement in 3D memory. The proposed die-selection method uses three search-space conditions, which can reduce the search space for selecting memory dies to manufacture 3D memories. Simulation results show that the proposed die-selection method can significantly improve the yield of 3D memories in various fault distributions.
This paper deals with the problem of generating a uniform tetrahedral mesh which fills a 3-D space with the tetrahedra which are close to the equilateral tetrahedra as possible. This problem is particularly interesting in finite element modeling where a fat triangulation minimizes the error of an analysis. Fat triangulation is defined as a scheme for generating an equilateral triangulation as possible in a given dimension. In finite element modeling, there are many algorithms for generating a mesh in 2-D and 3-D. One of the difficulties in generating a mesh in 3-D is that a 3-D object can not be filled with uniform equilateral tetrahedra only regardless of the shape of the boundary. Fat triangulation in 3-D has been proved to be the one which fills a 3-D space with the tetrahedra which are close to the equilateral as possible. Topological and geometrical properties of the fat triangulation and its application to meshing algorithm are investigated.
