  • In this paper, a shear-flexible finite element model is developed for the buckling analysis of axially loaded, thin-walled composite I-beams. Based on an orthogonal Cartesian coordinate system, the displacement fields are defined using the first-order shear-deformable beam theory. The derived element takes into account flexural shear deformation and torsional warping deformation. Three different types of beam elements, namely, the two-noded, three-noded, and four-noded beam elements, were developed to solve the governing equations. An inverse iteration with shift eigenvalue solution was used to solve the resulting linearized buckling problem. A parametric study was conducted to show the importance of shear flexibility and fiber orientation on the buckling behavior of thin-walled composite beams. A good agreement was obtained among the proposed shear-flexible model, other results available in literature, and the finite element solution.

  • Two nonlinear frame elements taking into account geometric nonlinearity is presented and compared based on the Lagrangian co-rotational formulation. The first frame element is believed to be geometrically-exact because not only tangent stiffness matrices is exactly evaluated including stiffness matrices due to initial deformation but also total member forces are directly determined from total deformations in the deformed state. Particularly two exact tangent stiffness matrices based on total Lagrangian and updated Lagrangian formulation, respectively, are verified to be identical. In the second frame element, the deformed curved shape is regarded as the polygon and current flexural deformations in iteration process are neglected in evaluating tangent stiffness matrices and total member forces. Two numerical examples are given to demonstrate the accuracy and the good performance of the first frame element compared with the second element. Furthermore it is shown that the first frame element can be used in tracing nonlinear behaviors of cable members.

  • In the particular situations where the crack is terminated at an interface of two materials, the order of stress singularity depends on the elastic constants which specify the properties of two materials. A multidomain boundary element technique is used to solve a crack normal to bimaterial interface. A correct order of shape function is used for displacement by using the isoparametric elements by shifting adequately the side nodes adjacent to this crack tip. A shape function containing the same order of singularity as that in the interface crack is also used for the interpolation of traction. Numerical testing of a binaterial with a crack normal to the interface is carried out with three-node elements. The results obtained are compared with the previous solutions.

  • Objection of this study is to present the three-dimensional material nonlinear analysis of reinforced concrete. A concrete is idealized with three-dimensional 16-node solid element including triaxial nonlinear stress-strain behavior, cracking, crushing and strain softening: a steel with three-dimensional 3 node truss element including elastic-plastic behavior with strain hardening. The cracked shear retention factor is introduced to estimate the effective shear modulus con sidering aggregate interlock after c:racking and a modified newton method is used to obtain a nu merical solution. Numerical results in a gauss point is displayed graphically. Numerical examples of Krahl's reinforced concrete beam and Hedgreds shell are selected to compare with the experimental and numerical results.

  • In this paper, a non-conforming 3-D 8-node solid element(MQM10) has beets applied to the analyses of static and dynamic bending problems of laminated composite plates The QM10 element exhibits stiffer bending stiffness which is caused by the reduction of degree of freedom from Q11 element. As an effective way to correct the relative stiffness stiffening phenomenon the modification of Gauss sampling points for composite plates is proposed. The quantity of modification is a function of material properties. Also, another two modified equations are obtained, one is modification for stress, and the other is modification of coefficient of shear modulus in free vibration. It is noted that MQM10 element can analyse the static and free vibration problems of various 3-dimensional composite plates composed of unidirectional laminae, woven laminae or braided laminae. The results of MQM10 element are in good agreement with those of 20-node element.

  • In a traditional topology optimization method, material properties are usually distributed by finite element density and visualized by a gray level image. The distribution method based on element density is adequate for a great mass of 2-D topology optimization problems. However, when it is used for 3-D topology optimization, it is always difficult to obtain a smooth model representation, and easily appears a virtualconnect phenomenon especially in a low-density domain. The 3-D structural topology optimization method has been developed using the node density instead of the element density that is based on SIMP (solid isotropic microstructure with penalization) algorithm. A computer code based on Matlab was written to validate the proposed method. When it was compared to the element density as design variable, this method could get a more uniform density distribution. To show the usefulness of this method, several typical examples of structure topology optimization are presented.

  • In this study, the delamination analysis has been implemented to investigate the initiation and propagation of crack in composite laminates composed of orthotropic materials. A simple modeling was achieved by moving nodal technique without re-meshing work when crack propagation occurred. This paper aims at achieving two specific objectives. The first is to suggest a very simple modeling scheme compared with those applied to conventional h-FEM based models. To verify the performance of the proposed model, analysis of double cantilever beams with composite materials was implemented and then the results were compared with reference values in literatures. The second one is to investigate the behavior of interior delamination problems using the proposed model. To complete these objectives, the full-discrete-layer model based on Lobatto shape functions was considered and energy release rates were calculated using three-dimensional VCCT(virtual crack closure technique) based on linear elastic fracture mechanics.

  • The analysis of linear static and free vibration problems of isotropic and laminated composite plates and shells is performed by the improved 9-node shell element with the new strain displacement relationship. In that relationship, the effect of new additional terms between the bending strain and displacement has been investigated in the warping problem. Natural co ordinate based strains, stresses and constitutive equations are used. The assumed natural strain method is used to alleviate both membrane and shear locking behavior from the element. The Lanczos method is employed in the calculation of the eigenvalues of laminated composite structures and the Gauss integration rule is adopted to evaluate the mass matrix. The numerical examples are compared with the analytical solutions to validate the current formulation and the results presented could be useful for the understanding of the behaviour of laminates under free vibration conditions.

  • This research presents a three-dimensional modeling technique for a flexible sheet. A relative coordinate formulation is used to represent the kinematics of the sheet. The three-dimensional flexible sheet is modeled by multi-rigid bodies interconnected by out-of-plane joints and plate force elements. A parent node is designated as a master body and is connected to the ground by a floating joint to cover the rigid motion of the flexible sheet in space. Since the in-plane deformation of a sheet such as a paper and a film is relatively small, compared to out-of-plane deformation, only the out-of-plane deformation is accounted for in this research. The recursive formulation has been adopted to solve the equations of motion efficiently. An example is presented to show the validity of the proposed method.

  • Delaunay triangulation is a very powerful method of mesh generation for its versatility such as handling complex geometries, element density control, and local/global remeshing capability, The limit of generating simplex elements(3-node elements in 2-D) only is resolved by adding generation module of 6-node quadratic elements. Since proposed adjacency does not change from 3-node element mesh to 6-node mesh, generation module can utilize the original simplex element generator. Therefore, versatility of the Delaunay triangulation is preserved. A simple upsetting problem is employed to show the possibility of the algorithm.
