  • The growth of stem and leaves in Saururus chinensis. in the 2nd year was markedly increased comparing to that in the 1st year, however the growth in the 3rd you was not increased significantly. The growth in the 1st yew was greater in low planting density, while the growth in the 3rd year decreased in higher planting densities. The num- ber of leaves and stems per unit area increased in higher planting densities and later years. The weight of stem and leaves in Saururus chinensis was higher at the highest planting density in the 1st yew, at $40{\times}10cm$ planting in the 2nd year and at $40{\times}20cm$ planting in the 3rd year. The weight of rhizome in Saururus chinensis increased greatly in the 2nd you comparing to that in the 1st year, but the increase was insignificant in the 3rd year. The weight of rhizomes in Saururus chinensis showed significant interaction between planting densities and years showed highly significant difference.

  • We studied the accumulation and partitioning of dry weight (DW) and nitrogen (N) in different parts of field-grown 'Fuyu' persimmon to elucidate that the foliar applications of supplemental N in June or September compared favorably with the traditional soil application in securing leaf area and fruit production. We also estimated the proportion of N permanently removed from the tree at the end of a growing season. Urea was applied either to leaves in June and/or September or to the soil in June and September for three consecutive years, and the trees were excavated in November for analyses. Total DW ranged from 4.2-4.8, 8.7-9.2, and 17.1-21.5 kg in a 4-, 5-, and 6-year-old tree, respectively, without statistical difference among the four treatments. Of the total DW, 3.3-10.2% was in shoots, 5.7-10.5% in leaves, 8.3-31.4% in aerial woods, 13.0-27.0% in root, and 28.0-59.3% in fruits. As the trees became more productive, DW proportion of fruits significantly affected that of the root: in 6-year-old trees, root DW accounted for only 10.6-15.8% of the tree total when fruit DW accounted for 50-60%. N contents ranged from 24.6-28.3, 48.3-53.5, and 98.3-122.6 g in a 4-, 5-, and 6-year-old trees, respectively, without statistical difference among the treatments. Of the total N, 6.2-11.5% was in shoots, 16.7-24.3% in leaves, 17.6-23.5% in aerial woods, 17.2-37.5% in roots, and 16.9-34.4% in fruits. As in DW, the increase in the proportion of N in fruits decreased in the root most significantly. Application methods for supplemental N did not affect the proportion of DW and N removed from the tree through abscising leaves and harvested fruits. Percentage of DW removal was 41 in 4- and 5-year-old trees, but it was 61 in more productive 6-year-old trees; that of N was 39, 43, and 49%, respectively. No significant changes in the contents of DW and N in field-grown trees, as well as their percentages removed from the tree at the end of the season, demonstrated that foliar application of supplemental N was as good as soil applications with much less N.

  • Ginsengs(1-3 years old) from the Keumsan were analysed for the rare earth element(REE) contents and compared with their soils from the biotite granite(CR), phyllite(PH) and shale(SL) areas. In the soils, high REE contents and correlations were found in the SL. In the ginsengs, high element contents were shown in the SL. High correlations were found in the 3 year. In the upper parts, the 2 year of the GR was mainly high. Comparing with the same aged ginsengs, high elements were shown in the SL. Positive correlations were dominated and high correlations were shown in the 3 year ginsengs. In the root parts, the GR was high in the 2 year while the PH and SL were high in the 3 year. Comparing with the same ages, high elements were shown in the SL. High correlation relationships were found. Comparing between upper and root parts, the upper parts were mainly high, LREE showed big differences and relative ratios of the 2 year were mainly high. Comparing between soils and ginsengs, the soils were mainly high. Ratios between soils and root parts(soils/root parts) were higher than those of the upper parts. Ratios of the LREE showed big differences relative to those in the HREE and the ratios increased with ages. Overall results suggested that ginsengs of the SL were similar to those of soils and those of the PH showed big differences.

  • These studies were conducted to know the any differences in growth characteristics and root quality due to flower color and culture periods in Chinese bellflower. White flowered lines had tendency of increasing in growth characters such as stem numbers, capsule numbers and seed yield per plant, plant height, and root characters such as root weight, root length and root diameter even though statistically not significant. No differences were observed in saponin and essential oil contents between them. Three years old plants had more stems and capsules per plants, root weight and root length than two years old plants while no difference in saponin and essential oil contents between them. Saponin content was gradually decreased while essential oil content was clearly lowed in the roots from plants cultured more than 3 years even though no differences in stem and capsule numbers per plant and plant height.

  • Bamboo is one of the major biomass resources that have many advantages such as fast growing, easy cultivation, short rotation, and a relatively lower price. In this study, the anatomical characteristics of Moso bamboo (Phyllostachys pubescens) by age from one-year-old to five-year-old were examined by optical and scanning electron microscopy. Also, the crystalline properties such as relative crystallinity and crystallite width were investigated by an X-ray diffraction method. In one-year-old bamboo xylem, a few vascular bundles showed missing bundle sheath in near the intercellular space. Moreover, one-year-old bamboo had the shortest fiber length and the smallest values in vessel diameter, width of vascular bundle, and thickness of inner layer. One-year-old bamboo also showed the smallest values in the crystallinity and crystallite width. Near epidermis samples had longer fiber length and greater vascular bundle spacing than near pith samples. Relative crystallinity and crystallite width near the epidermis were also higher than near the pith. This study revealed significant differences in qualitative and quantitative anatomical characteristics between one-year-old and two-year- or more old Moso bamboos. It is concluded that the structural differences by bamboo age can be used to differentiate the characteristics of juvenile and mature bamboo.

  • We compared the physicochemical properties of meat and viscera with regard to the age of abalone (1-, 2-, 3- and 4-year-old abalone). With respect to total amino acids, the level was highest in 1-year-old abalone, at $19,046.00{\pm}548.53\;mg%$, whereas 4-year-old abalone had the lowest value of $15,770.44{\pm}454.19\;mg%$. In the viscera, 3-year-old abalone had the greatest level of total amino acids, at $16,575.10{\pm}477.37\;mg%$, whereas 1-year-old abalone had the lowest, at $14,947.26{\pm}430.48\;mg%$. The level of total free amino acids in meat tended to increase with age whereas that of the viscera fell. The level of polyunsaturated acids decreased with age in meat. The concentration of chondroitin sulfate in both meat and viscera tended to increase with age. This was especially noticeable in meat. The level in 1-year-old abalone, $9.03{\pm}0.23%$ (w/w), rose to $14.17{\pm}0.33%$ in 4-year-old abalone, with statistical significance. On the other hand, the collagen level in both meat and viscera decreased with age. Again, this was particularly noticeable in meat, where the concentration in 1-year-old abalone, $199.70{\pm}5.00\;mg/g$, fell remarkably to the value of $47.86{\pm}1.10\;mg/g$ in 4-year-old abalone. We have thus provided basic data for research on abalone.

  • Age and growth of Ecklonia stolonifera Okamura were investigated by random quadrate sampling method at monthly intervals from February 1993 to January 1994 in Pusan Bay, southeastern coast of Korea. The size of various parts of the collected plants was periodically measured individually. An allometric relationship was established according to the total length, blade length, stipe length, stipe diameter and weight of frond. Each age group was divided according to the range of stipe length by the allometric relation. The population of E. stolonifera consisted of five age groups; 1 year ($41.5\%$), 2 years ($25.9\%$), 3 years ($21.1\%$), 4 years ($7.8\%$) and 5 years ($3.5\%$). During a year, biomass of the population increased drastically from May to September, but gradually decrease from October to January. Zoosporangial sori were observed on blades of three or more years old, from October to December. New populations were formed by zoospores, developed on shoots of three or more years old, and also they were vegetatively formed from stoloniferous haptera on two or more year old mother thalli.

  • Three species, Gymnogobius urotaenia, G. sp. 1 and G. sp. 2, which were collected at Hosanriver, Hosan-ri, Samcheock-si, Gangwon-do, Korea, were examined for study of the age and growth. There was no differences between sexes in growth (p>0.05) except in age 0 of G. urotaenia, However, there were differences among the three species (p<0.0001). namely, G. sp. 1 was longer by about 5~10 mm (SL) than the other two species in each age group, while G. sp. 2 was shortest in each age group: G. rotaenia, at age 0 was less than 45 mm, at age 1 to be 45~60 mm, at age 2 to be 60~80 mm, at age 3 to be over 80 mm, and its maximum size was 105.0 mm. G. sp. 1, at age 0 was less than 55 mm, at age 1 55~65 mm, at age 2 65~85 mm, at age 3 over 85 mm and its maximum size was 105.3 mm. G. sp. 2, 0 age was less than 40 mm, at age 1 40~55 mm, at age 2 55~75 mm, at age 3 over 75 mm and its maximum size was 85 mm. Changes of body parts with increasing of body length were examined and analyzed. Covariance analysis showed interspecies differences in the following characters: body depth, head length, caudal peduncle depth, upper jaw length and pelvic fin ray length. G. urotaenia had the highest K-value (the relative growth coefficient) in head length and pelvic fin ray length, and G. sp. 1 had the highest in body depth, caudal peduncle depth and upper jaw length. However, G. sp. 2 had the lowest K-value in these 5 characters.

  • Ginsengs (1,2 3 years) from the Keumsan are analysed for the inorganic compounds and compared with the their soils from the granite, phyllite and shale areas. In the soils, the granite areas show high $Al_2O_3\;and\;Na_2O$ contents while the phyllite areas have high $Fe_2O_3,\;MnO\;and\;MgO$ contents. Positive correlations are shown in the $Al_2O_3-K_2O\;and\;Fe_2O_3-MgO$ pairs while negative correlations are shown in the $SiO_2-CaO$ pair. In the ginsengs, the shale areas are high in the most of the elements, but low in the granite areas. Compared with same soils of different ages, Al, Na and Ti contents of the ginsengs are high in the all areas. The shale areas are mainly high in the upper parts while the granite areas are mainly high in the root parts. Regardless of the localities, Fe, Mn and Ca contents are high in the upper parts while Ti contents are high in the root parts with differences of several times. Relative ratios between field soils and ginsengs (field soil/ginseng) suggest that the ginsengs show high Ca contents with differences of several ten times whereas the soils have high Na, Fe, Ti and Al contents with differences of several times. Regardless of the localities, the ratios of the Al, Mn and Na are high in the 2 year relative to the 3 year. Overall ratios between field soils and ginsengs are mainly big in the 2 year area relative to the 3 year area. It suggests that contents of the 3 year ginsengs are more similar to those of their soils relative to the 2 year and the ginsengs may absorpt eligible element contents with increasing ages.
