This paper presents a fast 3D mesh generation method using projection for line laser-based 3D scanners. The well-known method for 3D mesh generation utilizes convex hulls for 4D vertices that is converted from the input 3D vertices. This 3D mesh generation for a large set of vertices requires a lot of time. To overcome this problem, the proposed method takes (${\theta}-y$) 2D depth map into account. The 2D depth map is a projection version of 3D data with a form of (${\theta}$, y, z) which are intermediately acquired by line laser-based 3D scanners. Thus, our 2D-based method is a very fast 3D mesh generation method. To evaluate our method, we conduct experiments with intermediate 3D vertex data from line-laser scanners. Experimental results show that the proposed method is superior to the existing method in terms of mesh generation speed.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the reliability of repeated measurements of several dental scanners. Blue-lighted scanners, white-light scanners and optical-type scanners are used in the study of repeatability in this study. The measurement results were calculated as root mean square (RMS) and the significance level was confirmed by applying the 1-way ANOVA statistical technique (𝛼=.05). According to the statistical analysis, the scanner with the largest RMS value was Z-opt group (38.2 ㎛. Next, D-white was 35.2 ㎛ and the group with the lowest RMS value was I-blue (34.1 ㎛). The comparison of RMS means between each group was not significant (p>.05). From this result, the blue light had the lowest error in repeatability of dental scanners, but no statistical significance. The conclusion of this study is that the study results are clinically acceptable.

Application of 3D laser scanner to civil engineering is widely studied in various fields such as tunnel, bridge, calculation of earth volume, construction measurement, observation of rock joint, etc. Some studies on utilization of the 3D laser scanner for calculating the over-break and/or under-break of tunnels have also been carried out. However, in the previous research, the scanning data were usually compared with the 2D CAD blueprint results; although the shape of tunnel structure is relatively simple, for precise calculation of the over-break and/or under-break of tunnels, three-dimensional analysis based on BIM is needed. Therefore, in this paper, a new program that calculates the over-break and/or under-break of tunnels using the 3D laser scanner and the BIM is developed; moreover the effective and rapid process of data treatment is proposed. The accuracy of the developed program was verified by applying the new system to a real tunnels construction field.
We have developed a non-destructive, touch-free method for estimating leaf areas with a structured-light three-dimensional (3D) scanner. When the surfaces of soybean leaves were analyzed with both the 3D scanner and a leaf area meter, the results were linearly related ($R^2=0.90$). The strong correlation ($R^2=0.98$) was calculated between shoot fresh weights and leaf areas when the scanner was employed during growth stages V1 to V4. We also found that leaf areas measured by the scanner could be used to detect changes in growth responses to abiotic stress. Whereas under control conditions the areas increased over time, salt and drought treatments were associated with reductions in those values after 14 d and 12 d, respectively. Based on our findings, we propose that a structured-light 3D scanner can be used to obtain reliable estimates of leaf area and plant biomass.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the image acquisition ability of intraoral scanners by analyzing the comprehensiveness of scanned images from standardized model, and to identify problems of the model. Materials and Methods: Cast models and 3D-printed models were prepared according to international standards set by ISO12836 and ANSI/ADA no. 132, which were then scanned by model scanner and two different intraoral scanners (TRIOS3 and CS3500). The image acquisition performance of the scanners was classified into three grades, and the study was repeated with varying surface conditions of the models. Results: Model scanner produced the most accurate images in all models. Meanwhile, CS3500 showed good image reproducibility for angled structures and TRIOS3 showed good image reproducibility for rounded structures. As for model ingredients, improved plaster model best reproduced scan images regardless of the type of scanner used. When limited to 3D-printed model, powdered surface condition resulted in higher image quality. Conclusion: When scanning structures beyond FOV (field of view) in standardized models (following ISO12836 and ANSI/ADA 132), lack of reference points to help distinguish different faces confuses the scanning and matching process, resulting in inaccurate display of images. These results imply the need to develop a new standard model not confined to simple pattern repetition and symmetric structure.
3D scanners are applied to many industries, such as manufacturing, construction, and shipbuilding. Recently, 3D scanner is used in 3D imaging of worksite in order to control and guide earthmoving heavy equipments, which provides basic information for intelligent excavation. This study compares the accuracy and productivity between total stations and high-resolution 3D scanners. The analysis results show that 3D scanner has high accurate rate of greater than 99 percent and has low error rate of less than 2.0mm compared to total stations. In terms of productivity, 3D scanner saves 71 percent of measuring time compared to the total station. This study confirms that 3D scanner can measure the earthwork sites with high accuracy and better productivity.

Purpose: NEMA NU2-2001 was proposed as a new standard for performance evaluation of whole body PET scanners. in this study, system performance of Siemens CTI ECAT EXACT 47 PET scanner including spatial resolution, sensitivity, scatter fraction, and count rate performance in 2D and 3D mode was evaluated using this new standard method. Methods: ECAT EXACT 47 is a BGO crystal based PET scanner and covers an axial field of view (FOV) of 16.2 cm. Retractable septa allow 2D and 3D data acquisition. All the PET data were acquired according to the NEMA NU2-2001 protocols (coincidence window: 12 ns, energy window: $250{\sim}650$ keV). For the spatial resolution measurement, F-18 point source was placed at the center of the axial FOV((a) x=0, and y=1, (b)x=0, and y=10, (c)x=70, and y=0cm) and a position one fourth of the axial FOV from the center ((a) x=0, and y=1, (b)x=0, and y=10, (c)x=10, and y=0cm). In this case, x and y are transaxial horizontal and vertical, and z is the scanner's axial direction. Images were reconstructed using FBP with ramp filter without any post processing. To measure the system sensitivity, NEMA sensitivity phantom filled with F-18 solution and surrounded by $1{\sim}5$ aluminum sleeves were scanned at the center of transaxial FOV and 10 cm offset from the center. Attenuation free values of sensitivity wire estimated by extrapolating data to the zero wall thickness. NEMA scatter phantom with length of 70 cm was filled with F-18 or C-11solution (2D: 2,900 MBq, 3D: 407 MBq), and coincidence count rates wire measured for 7 half-lives to obtain noise equivalent count rate (MECR) and scatter fraction. We confirmed that dead time loss of the last flame were below 1%. Scatter fraction was estimated by averaging the true to background (staffer+random) ratios of last 3 frames in which the fractions of random rate art negligibly small. Results: Axial and transverse resolutions at 1cm offset from the center were 0.62 and 0.66 cm (FBP in 2D and 3D), and 0.67 and 0.69 cm (FBP in 2D and 3D). Axial, transverse radial, and transverse tangential resolutions at 10cm offset from the center were 0.72 and 0.68 cm (FBP in 2D and 3D), 0.63 and 0.66 cm (FBP in 2D and 3D), and 0.72 and 0.66 cm (FBP in 2D and 3D). Sensitivity values were 708.6 (2D), 2931.3 (3D) counts/sec/MBq at the center and 728.7 (2D, 3398.2 (3D) counts/sec/MBq at 10 cm offset from the center. Scatter fractions were 0.19 (2D) and 0.49 (3D). Peak true count rate and NECR were 64.0 kcps at 40.1 kBq/mL and 49.6 kcps at 40.1 kBq/mL in 2D and 53.7 kcps at 4.76 kBq/mL and 26.4 kcps at 4.47 kBq/mL in 3D. Conclusion: Information about the performance of CTI ECAT EXACT 47 PET scanner reported in this study will be useful for the quantitative analysis of data and determination of optimal image acquisition protocols using this widely used scanner for clinical and research purposes.

Making a model that is an accurate replica of the oral structure requires precision and efficiency. Nowadays, rapid technological advances bring digitalization in dentistry. One of the most important works in digital dentistry is three-dimensional modeling of the oral cavity and digitizing the 3D data. Among the three components of CAD/CAM, (1) data capture component (digitizers), (2) design component (CAD software), (3) manufacturing component (CAM), the basic component that has a significant impact on the other processes is the data capture component, i.e. intra-oral scanners. This literature review discusses the principles and clinical use of intra-oral scanners in dentistry based on recent publications of the past 5 years using the PubMed and Google Scholar databases.

This study is to improve position accuracy by selecting proper a servo motor and applying FOC(Field Oriented Control) on developing a 3D terrestrial laser scanner. A 3D terrestrial laser scanner under developing has range of scanning of azimuth 360$^\circ$and elevation 270$^\circ$. It is implemented by precise controlling of a azimuth motor and a elevation motor. In the consequence of study, we have known that position accuracy of the motor can be able to be improved with constant torque of the motor by using FOC(Field Oriented Control). The control technic of the motor is possible to apply a 3D terrestrial laser scanner as well as a robotic total station.
