  • Technology use can dramatically enhance teachers' performance in teaching and administrative tasks. An Electronic Performance Support System (EPSS) is a versatile tool that could provide just-in-time and on-the-job training when teachers need it. In order to design an effective EPSS for teachers, it is critical to identify their needs. This study used interviews to identify teachers' needs for technology by asking them about their workloads, the difficulty and time demands of tasks, and useful technologies. The implications of the findings for the design of an EPSS are discussed, including the necessity of an adaptive design of the EPSS.

  • This paper describes autonomous emergency braking systems (AEB) for elderly drivers designed to consider their driving characteristics. With aging, perception-reaction time, and decision-making time increase accordingly. Without being aware of these performance degradations, however, changes in driving patterns due to increased alertness while driving lead to vehicle crashes. Therefore, it is necessary to develop an autonomous emergency braking system by incorporating the characteristics of the elderly driver. In order to enhance the driver acceptance of older people, perception-reaction time, alertness, and ride comfort need to be considered for conventional autonomous emergency braking systems (C-AEB). Proactive AEB(P-AEB) algorithm has been proposed to reflect human factor of elderly driver above. The performance of the proposed algorithm has been evaluated through MATLAB simulink simulation studies. It has been shown from the computer simulations that the proposed P-AEB algorithm enhances the driver acceptance of older people by improving ride comfort while ensuring safety of vehicle.

  • Any new method for controlling a nonlinear system has widely been reported. An inverted pendulum system has typically been used as a target system for demonstrating its usefulness. In this paper, we propose an algorithm to control a flexible joint cart based inverted pendulum system. Two carts are connected with a spring and one is a driving cart and the other is no driving cart with a pole. We here present a system modeling and a good fuzzy logic based control algorithm. We also introduce LQR (Linar Quadratic Regulator) technique for reducing the number of control variables. By using this technique, the number of input variables for a fuzzy logic controller is become only two not six. So the computational complexity is largely reduced. Moreover, a two-input fuzzy logic controller has a control rule table with a skew-symmetric property. And it will lead the design of a single-input fuzzy logic controller. In order to demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed method and prove the superiority of the proposed method, some computer simulations are presented.

  • Ext4 file system is widely used in various computing environments such as those of the PC, the server, and the Linux-based embedded system. Ext4, which uses a buffer for block I/O, provides fsync() system call to applications to guarantee the consistency of a specific file. A log of the analytical studies regarding the operation of Ext4 and the improvement of its performance has been compiled, but it has not been studied in detail in terms of kernel versions. We figure out that the behavior of fsync() system call is different depending on the kernel version. Between the kernel versions of 3.4.0 and 4.7.2, 3.4.0, 3.8.0, and 4.6.2 showed behavioral differences regarding the fsync() system call. The latency of fsync() in kernel 3.4.0 is longer than that of the more-advanced 3.7.10; meanwhile, the characteristics of 3.8.0 enabled the disruption of the Ext4 journaling order, but the ordered defect was solved with 4.6.2.

  • Slopes stabilised with piles are seldom analysed considering uncertainties in the parameters of the pile-slope system. Reliability analysis of the pile-slope system quantifies the degree of uncertainties and evaluates the safety of the system. In the present study, the reliability analysis of a slope stabilised with piles is performed using the first-order reliability method (FORM) based on Hasofer-Lind approach. The implicit performance function associated with the factor of safety (FS) of the slope is approximated using the response surface method. The analyses are carried out considering the design matrices formulated based on both the 2k factorial design augmented with a centre run (2k fact-centred design) and face-centered cube design (FCD). The finite element method is used as the deterministic model to compute the FS of the pile-slope system. Results are compared with the results of the Monte Carlo simulation. It is observed that the optimum location of the row of piles is at the middle of the slope to achieve the maximum FS. The results show that the reliability of the system is not uniform for different pile configurations, even if the system deterministically satisfies the target factor of safety (FSt) criterion. The FSt should be selected judiciously as it is observed that the reliability of the system changes drastically with the FSt level. The results of the 2k fact-centred design and FCD are in good agreement with each other. The procedure of the FCD is computationally costly and hence the use of 2k fact-centred design is recommended, provided the response of the system is sufficiently linear over the factorial space.

  • In this paper, in order to secure the safety and productivity of pine cone harvest, modeling and structural analysis of the hammering system for pine cone harvest drone that can easily access pine cone of Pinus koraiensis and collide with them to harvest them was performed. It calculate the equivalent stress for the structure of the hammering system and the yield strength of the applied material by applying the shear force of the stalk at which the pine cone is separated from the branch, and it is to verify the safety of the structure and propose an optimal design through appropriate factor of safety and design change. The shear force of the stalk at which the pine cone was separated from the branch was 468 N, and was applied to both ends of the hammering system. The yield strength of SS400 steel used in the hammering system is 245 ㎫, and the design change and structural analysis were performed so that the Von Mises stress could be less than 122.5 ㎫ by applying the factor of safety of 2.0 or more. As a result of the structural analysis of the frist modeling, the Von Mises stress was 220.3 ㎫, the factor of safety was 1.12, and the stress was concentrated in the screw fastening holes. As a result of the design change of the screw fastening holes, the Von Mises stress was 169.4 ㎫, the factor of safety was 1.45, and the stress was concentrated on the side part. As a result of the design change by changing screw fastening holes and adding ribs, the Von Mises stress was 121.6 ㎫, and the factor of safety was 2.02. The safety of the hammering system was secured with an optimal design with little change in mass. There was no deformation or damage as a result of experimenting on pine cone harvest by manufacturing the hammering system with an optimal design.

  • The basic difference between the EKF(Extended Kalman Filter) and UKF(Unscented Kalman Filter) stems from the manner in which Gaussian random variables(GRV) are represented for propagating through system dynamics. In the EKF, the state distribution is approximated by a GRV, which is then propagated analytically through the first-order linearization of the nonlinear system. This can possibly introduce large errors in the true posterior mean and covariance of the transformed GRV, which may lead to sub-optimal performance and sometimes divergence of the filter. However, the UKF addresses this problem by using a deterministic sampling approach. The state distribution is also approximated by a GRV, but is now represented using a minimal set of carefully chosen sample points. These sample points completely capture the true mean and covariance of the GRV, and UKF captures the posterior mean and covariance accurately up to the 2nd order(Taylor series expansion) for any nonlinearity. This paper utilizes the UKF to determine spacecraft orbit when only magnetometer is available. Several catastrophic failures of spacecraft in orbit have been attributed to failures of the spacecraft mission. Recently studies on contingency-major sensor failure cases- have been performed. For mission success, contingency design or plan should be implemented in case of a major sensor failure. Therefore the algorithm presented in this paper can be used for a spacecraft without GPS or contingency design in case of GPS failure.

  • In order to respond dynamic changes in the global distribution system, the City of Pyeongtaek hope to expand port facilities and its hinterlands. In specific, it plans to designate these areas as free economic zones(FEZ), synthesizing the whole procedures from the development proposals to the operation and management. This paper examines the proposed urban development strategies focused on Pyeongtaek port which still reveals critical weakness as a gateway port backed up by the Seoul Metropolitan Areas. In order to enhance the global competitiveness of Pyeongtaek port, theoretically it depends on Geo Coyle's ACTIFELD methods. In addition to the traditional quantitative data, Coyle's ACTIFELD methods emphasize qualitative approaches, all of which would facilitate structural and systemic analyses of complex social phenomena. Applying ACTIFELD methods, this paper proposes that the City of Pyeongtaek should focus on three alternatives. That is, Pyeongtaek's policy priority should be given to ts he port city based on the key concepts of Supply Chain Management(SCM), Co-opetition supporting city, and waterfront-initiated urban development.

  • In Korea, the number of LPG vehicles is increasing continuously because LPG is cheaper than Gasoline. Also in Europe, the CNG fuel is a good solution to meet $CO_2$ regulation. In order to use LPG/CNG fuel, new EMS ECU must be developed for every type of vehicles and it requires huge development cost. In order to reduce development cost and time, SIEMENS VDO has developed an Interface Box. It supports EMS ECU in the car and manages LPG/CNG fuel injection system. Basically the Interface box can be used with any kind of EMS ECU. The Interface Box controls LPG/CNG injector through the injection command of gasoline EMS ECU. It calculates required amount of based on the fuel temperature and pressure and sends feedback signal to ECU for fuel correction. Also, it controls LPG/CNG specific actuator such a Shut off valves and LPG switch inputs.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate a simulation model of a stacking guidance system (SGS) with a roller guide applicable to the mobile harbor. The study used a small-scale model (1/20) made of wood with rollers in order to compare the dynamic analysis with experiment results. The law of similarity was applied for the validation of the scaled model. In order to construct a more realistic simulation model, the damping coefficient of the dynamic model was adjusted to 0.5 Ns/mm for the wood-to-wood contact condition based on the experimental results. Using this validated model, dynamic simulations were also carried out for containers of 20, 30, and 40 tons. The results showed that the reaction force of the roller guide was increased from 74.7 kN to 91.2 kN as the weight of container increased. For the design of a roller guide for SGS, the results obtained in this study can be used to reduce the reaction force by employing a rubber roller or a highly damped rotational joint.
