  • The $\beta$-SiC+ZrB$_2$ and $\beta$-SiC+TiB$_2$ceramic electroconductive composites were pressureless-sintered and annealed by adding l2wt% A1$_2$ $O_3$+Y$_2$ $O_3$(6 : 4wt%) powder as a function of sintering temperature. The relative density showed highest value of 84.92% of the theoretical density for SiC-TiB$_2$ at 190$0^{\circ}C$ sintering temperature. The phase analysis of the composites by XRD revealed of $\alpha$-SiC(6H), TiB$_2$, $Al_{5}$Y$_2$ $O_{12}$ and $\beta$-SiC(15R). Flexural strength showed the highest of 230 MPa for SiC-ZrB$_2$ composites sintered at 190$0^{\circ}C$. The vicker's hardness increased with increasing sintering temperature and showed the highest for SiC-ZrB$_2$ composites sintered at 190$0^{\circ}C$. Owing to YAG, the fracture toughness showed the highest of 6.50 MPa . m$^{1}$2/ for SiC-ZrB$_2$ composites at 190$0^{\circ}C$. The electrical resistivity was measured by the Rauw method from $25^{\circ}C$ to $700^{\circ}C$. The electrical resistivity of the composites showed the PTCR(Positive Temperature Coefficient Resistivity).).

  • A strain-hardening highly ductile composite based on an alkali-activated slag binder and synthetic fibers is a promising construction material due to its excellent tensile behavior and owing to the ecofriendly characteristics of its binder. This study investigated the effect of different types of synthetic fibers and water-to-binder ratios on the compressive strength and tensile behavior of slag-based cementless composites. Alkali-activated slag was used as a binder and water-to-binder ratios of 0.35, 0.45, and 0.55 were considered. Three types of fibers, polypropylene fiber, polyethylene (PE) fiber, and polyparaphenylene-benzobisethiazole (PBO) fiber, were used as reinforcing fibers, and compression and uniaxial tension tests were performed. The test results showed that the PE fiber series composites exhibited superior tensile behavior in terms of the tensile strain capacity and crack patterns while PBO fiber series composites had high tensile strength levels and tight crack widths and spacing distances.

  • Objective: This study evaluated the cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of fixed orthodontic treatment with three different light-cured orthodontic bonding composites by analyzing micronucleus (MN) formation in the buccal mucosa during a 6-month period. Methods: Thirty healthy volunteers were selected from consecutive patients referred for orthodontic treatment. Equilibrium 2 brackets and molar tubes (Dentaurum) were bonded with three different lightcured orthodontic bonding composites-Transbond XT (3M Unitek), Kurasper F (Kuraray Europe), or GrenGloo (Ormco Corporation)- to all teeth in both arches. Exfoliated buccal epithelial cells were scraped from the middle part of the inner cheeks with sterile cement spatulas before treatment and at 1, 3, and 6 months after treatment. MNs and nuclear alterations, such as karyorrhexis (KR), karyolysis (KL), and binucleated cells (BNs), were scored under a light microscope. Repeated measure ANOVA was used to calculate statistical differences in degenerative nuclear abnormalities. Results: MN rates did not significantly differ among different time points within the same cell type (p > 0.05). In contrast, the number of BNs in buccal epithelial cells significantly increased in all composite groups (p < 0.01, Transbond XT; p < 0.001, Kurasper F and GrenGloo). KL frequency significantly increased between the beginning and end of the study in the Kurasfer F ($0.80{\pm}0.79$ to $1.90{\pm}1.10$; p < 0.05) and GrenGloo ($1.30{\pm}1.06$ to $2.40{\pm}1.08$; p < 0.05) groups. Conclusions: After 6 months of fixed orthodontic treatment with different light-cured composites, morphological signs of cytotoxicity were observed but genotoxic effects were absent.

  • $Al_2O_3$/SiC particulate composites were fabircated by pressureless sintering. The dispersed phase was SiC of which the content was varied from 1.0 to 10 vol%. Three SiC powders having different median diameters from 0.28 $\mu\textrm{m}$ to 1.9 $\mu\textrm{m}$ were used. The microstructure became finer and more uniform as the SiC content increased except the 10 vol% specimens, which were sintered at a higher temperature. Under the same sintering condition, densification as well as grain growth was retarded more severly when the SiC content was higher or the SiC particle size was smaller. The highest flexural strength obtained at 5.0 vol% SiC regardless of the SiC particle size seemed to be owing to the finer and more uniform microstructures of the specimens. Annealing of the specimens at $1300^{\circ}C$ improved the strength in general and this annealing effect was good for the specimens containing as low as 1.0 vol% of SiC. Fracture toughness did not change appreciably with the SiC content but, for the composites containing 10 vol% SiC, a significantly higher toughness was obtained with the specimen containing 1.9$\mu\textrm{m}$ SiC particles.

  • The composites were fabricated 61 vol.%$\alpha$-$\alpha$-SiC and 39vol.% WC powders with the liquid forming additives of 12wt% $Al_2$O$_3$+Y$_2$O$_3$ by pressureless annealing at 1700, 1800, 190$0^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours. The result of phase analysis of composites by XRD revealed $\alpha$-SiC(2H), WC, and YAG(Al$_{5}$ Y$_3$O$_{12}$ ) crystal phase. The relative density, the flexural strength, fracture toughness and Young's modulus showed respectively the highest value of 99.4%, 375.76㎫, 5.79㎫ㆍm$\frac{1}{2}$, and 106.43㎬ for composite by pressureless annealing temperature 190$0^{\circ}C$ at room temperature. The electrical resistivity showed the lowest value of 1.47${\times}$10$^{-3}$ $\Omega$$.$cm for composite by pressureless annealing temperature 190$0^{\circ}C$ at $25^{\circ}C$. The electrical resistivity of the $\alpha$-SiC-WC composites was all positive temperature cofficient resistance (PTCR) in the temperature ranges from $25^{\circ}C$ to 50$0^{\circ}C$.

  • It is well-known that the bond strength between CFRP(Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic) and aluminum is significantly affected by the surface treatment of the CFRP and the aluminum. This study investigates the surface treatment of CFRP to improve the T-peel strength of CFRP/aluminum composites. The surface of %CFRP([0^0]_{14})$ was treated by the ion assisted reaction method under oxygen environment. T-peel strength tests were performed based on the procedure of ASTM D1876-95. The T-peel strength of surface-treated CFRP/aluminum composites was compared with that of untreated CFRP/aluminum composites. The results showed that the T-peel strength of surface-treated CFRP/aluminum composites was about 5.5 times higher than that of untreated CFRP/aluminum composites. SEM examination showed that the improvement of T-peel strength was attributed to the uniform spread and fracture of epoxy adhesive.

  • This work investigated the gamma-ray shielding performance, and the physical and mechanical properties of poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) composites embedded with 0-44.0 wt% bismuth trioxide (Bi2O3) fabricated by the fast ultraviolet (UV) curing method. The results showed that the addition of Bi2O3 had significantly improved the gamma shielding ability of PMMA composites. Mass attenuation coefficient and half-value layer were examined using five gamma sources (Cs-137, Ba-133, Cd-109, Co-57, and Co-60). The high loading of Bi2O3 in the PMMA samples improved the micro-hardness to nearly seven times that of the pure PMMA. With these enhancements, it was demonstrated that PMMA/Bi2O3 composites are promising gamma shielding materials. Furthermore, the fast UV curing exerts its great potential in significantly shortening the production cycle of shielding material to enable rapid manufacturing.

  • Application of nanotechnology can be used to tailor made cementitious composites owing to small dimension and physical behaviour of resulting hydration products. Because of high aspect ratio and extremely high strength, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are perfect reinforcing materials. Hence, there is a great prospect to use CNTs in developing new generation cementitious materials. In the present paper, a parametric study has been conducted on cementitious composites reinforced by two types of multi walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) designated as Type I CNT (10-20 nm outer dia.) and Type II CNT (30-50 nm outer dia.) with various concentrations ranging from 0.1% to 0.5% by weight of cement. To evaluate important properties such as flexural strength, strain to failure, elastic modulus and modulus of toughness of the CNT admixed specimens at different curing periods, flexural bending tests were performed. Results show that composites with Type II CNTs gave more strength as compared to Type I CNTs. The highest increase in strength (flexural and compressive) is of the order of 22% and 33%, respectively, compared to control samples. Modulus of toughness at 28 days showed highest improvement of 265% for Type II 0.3% CNT composites. It is obvious that an optimum percentage of CNT could exists for composites to achieve suitable reinforcement behaviour and desired strength properties. Based on the parametric study, a tentative optimum CNT concentration (0.3% by weight of cement) has been proposed. Scanning electron microscope image shows perfect crack bridging mechanism; several of the CNTs were shown to act as crack arrestors across fine cracks along with some CNTs breakage.

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of nanofiller content on the microhardness and polymerization of experimental microhybrid composites. The nanofiller contorts in the experimental composites were varied (0%, 1%, 2%, 3%), while the total filler content remained constant as 76%wt. We obtained the following results: 1. The microhardness of the top surface for the 2% 3% nanofilled microhybrid composites were significantly higher than those for the 0%, 1% nanofilled composites (p<0.05), but the difference was not great. 2. The microhardness of the bottom surfaces significantly increased with an increase in the nanofiller level (p<0.05), except between the 2% and 3% nanofilled groups (P>0.05). 3. As the nanofiller level increased, the difference between microhardness of top and bottom surfaces significantly decreased (p<0.05), except between 2% and 3% nanofilled groups (p>0.05).
