Optimal Design of Two-Dimensional Hypersonic Intake Geometry (2차원 극초음속 흡입구 형상 최적 설계)

  • The optimal method to intuitively and systematical design hypersonic intakes is reported. In Mach 7 flow condition, the hypersonic intake model designed by theoretical approach is corrected by CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) analysis based on viscous flow condition, leading to the optimum hypersonic intake model. For performance comparison with CFD analysis, the double ramp intake is superior to the single ramp intake. Furthermore, in the off-design condition, the performance of the designed hypersonic intake is little degraded.

  • In this study, the hydraulic experiments were conducted for the dredging efficiency of the cutter head type, which includes the open type and the close type cutter head. The dredging experimental instrument was installed in the large water tank which has the dimension of $4.9m(L){\times}2.2m(W){\times}1.5m(H)$. The dredging experiments were performed for the various conditions of dredging depth, rotating speed, and suction speed of the cutter head. As the results, the dredging efficiency of the close-type cutter head is much higher than that of the open-type cutter head. The dredging efficiency of the same cutter head type was mainly influenced by the rotating speed of cutter head. Also the adequate suction speed of the cutter head is needed for more effective dredging.

  • Turbulent flows in a intake part of vacuum cleaner are studied by RANS simulations. The governing equations are solved by the SIMPLE algorithm based on the finite volume method of the unstructured grid system. The predicted results show that the suction performance is closely related to the variation of flow structure in the intake part. In order to investigate for the cleaning of bedclothes and carpet without sticking, several design changes are applied. The introduction of a solid cylinder in the intake part changes vortical structures significantly. Based on this result, a new design with spiral brushes is proposed. The design shows a good behavior for the suction performance and the flow control.

  • In this study, it made to run conventional single direct injection(DI) diesel engine, which adapted bulk combustion system not following spark ignition system without any ignition apparatus. It was heated and controlled inlet-air into conventional single DI diesel engine. The maximum value of brake thermal efficiency was at 35 region of air-fuel ratio. On the contrary, when the region of air-fuel ratio leaner than 35, brake thermal efficiency was decreased suddenly. And brake thermal efficiency was increased as much as inlet-air heating temperature increased. So, when air-fuel ratio was decreased and inlet-air heating temperature was higher, the engine was in optimal operation condition.

  • The present study deals with numerical flow analysis to investigate the effect of sweep and lean on the performance characteristics of a partial admission supersonic turbine. The flow analysis was performed for three different angles. The angles of sweep and lean are $5^{\circ}$, $10^{\circ}$, $15^{\circ}$. The results of the flow analysis showed that the efficiency is improved as the sweep angle is increased. However, a sweep angle of $5^{\circ}$ was less effective in comparison with the baseline model. The total pressure loss was reduced as the lean angle is increased, but the total to static efficiency was decreased.

  • A method to model left ventricular assist device (LVAD) and detect suction occurrence for safe LVAD operation is presented. An axial flow blood pump as a LVAD has been used to assist patient with heart problems. While an axial flow blood pump, a kind of a non-pulsatile pump, has relative advantages of small size and efficiency compared to pulsatile devices, it has a difficulty in determining a safe pump operating condition. It can show different pump operating statuses such as a normal status and a suction status whether suction occurs in left ventricle or not. A fuzzy subtractive clustering method is used to determine a model of the axial flow blood pump with this pump operating characteristic and the developed pump model can provide blood flow estimates before and after suction occurrence in left ventricle. Also, a fuzzy subtractive clustering method is utilized to develop a suction detection model which can identify whether suction occurs in left ventricle or not.

  • As the step to improve fuel efficiency, there is the system to build up the eddy of combustion chamber at the suction line in order to increase the combustion efficiency. The models installed with no vortex generation system or with various shapes of the system are examined by fluid analysis. Vortex generation system is installed prior to the suction of combustion chamber. The wing of this system winds itself around the suction air and generates the vortex. This study investigates the flow of suction air and the pressure distribution of suction stroke by using the eddy generation system.

Study on the Swirling Motion Effect of Ejector Performance (회전 운동이 이젝터 성능에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구)

  • This paper aims to examine the effect of rotational fluid motion about the efficiency of the gas - liquid ejector, which is a core unit in a ship equilibrium water treatment system. The ejector is a device for injecting ozone into ship equilibrium by the negative pressure generated by exchange of momentum between water and ozone. The existing ejector ejects the driving fluid with a simple form. In this paper, however, a rotation induction device is applied to the driving nozzle so that the driving fluid can be rotated and injected. To investigate the flow characteristics by the rotational movement of the driving fluid, CFD was used. The pressure and flow rate of the driving fluid, the negative pressure and suction flow rate of the suction fluid in the suction part, and the discharge pressure were predicted. On the basis of the results, the efficiency of the ejector using the rotation induction system was 22.25%, which was about 1.7% better than that of the existing ejector. Finally, to verify the feasibility of the CFD, an experiment was conducted on the ejector using the rotation induction device and the results were similar to those of the CFD.

  • In order to know the characteristics of the hypersonic air-breahting engine, high altitude and Mach number ground test is necessary. Therefore, high pressure and high temperature condition should be simulated to do ground test of the hypersonic air-breathing engine. In this paper, the hypersonic air-breathing engine ground test facility of the Korea Aerospace Research Institute was introduced and the composition and characteristics were described.
