This paper aims to explain the safety assessment and remediation mechanism of Granulated Coal Ash (GCA) as a material for the remediation of coastal sediments and to evaluate the improvement of the sediment in Kaita Bay, where GCA was applied. The concentrations of heavy metal contained in GCA and the dissolved amounts of heavy metal from GCA satisfied the criteria for soil and water pollution in Japan. The mechanisms on the remediation of coastal sediments using GCA is summarized as follows; (1) removal of phosphate and hydrogen sulfide (2) neutralization of acidic sediment (3) oxidation of reductive sediment (4) increase of water permeability (5) increase of soil strength (6) material for a base of seagrass. From the results obtained from the field experiment carried out in Kaita Bay, it was clarified that GCA is a promizing material for remediation of coastal sediment. This remediation technology can contribute to promote waste reduction in society and to decrease cost of coastal sediment remediation by applying GCA in other polluted coastal areas.
This experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of dietary supplementation of fermented microbial complex(Eco-Farm$^{(R)}$) on performance of finishing pigs and indoor air quality in finishing building. A total 135 crossbred [(Landrace ${\times}$ Yorkshire) ${\times}$ Duroc] pigs were randomly arranged into nine groups and assigned to three treatments. Pigs were fed a basal diet supplemented with 0, 0.5 and 1% level of fermented microbial complex(Eco-Farm$^{(R)}$) until the market weight for 40 days of the experimental period. Average daily feed intake and feed conversion ratio were significantly improved (p<0.05) with dietary supplementation of 0.5% fermented microbial complex (Eco-Farm$^{(R)}$): however, average daily gain was not affected by dietary supplementation of fermented microbial complex(Eco-Farm$^{(R)}$). Indoor ammonia and hydrogen sulfide concentrations in the finishing building were significantly(p<0.05) decreased by dietary supplementation of fermented microbial complex(Eco-Farm$^{(R)}$) compared with those of control, however, indoor carbon dioxide concentration was not affected by dietary supplementation of fermented microbial complex(Eco-Farm$^{(R)}$). In conclusion, the results obtained from this experiment suggest that the dietary supplementation of fermented microbial complex(Eco-Farm$^{(R)}$) for finishing pigs improved performance and indoor air quality in the finishing building.hing building.
Civil appeals on odor from swine barn have been increasing. This study was conducted to compile basic data of odor from swine barns as civil appeals on odor have been increasing. Odor was monitored from two gestating sow barns and the boundary of those barns in Suwon and Hwaseong city from June to November, 2008. Mean ammonia concentration measured at the boundary of A piggery in Suwon city was 0.9 ppm with occasional breaks of permissible limit (1.0 ppm). Mean concentrations of hydrogen sulfide and methyl mercaptan were 0.37 ppb and 0.01 ppb, which were lower than permissible limits of 20 ppb and 2 ppb, respectively. Mean ammonia concentration was 3.22 ppm and was maintained under 5.0 ppb. Ammonia concentration had increased since November when the barns were closed. Hydrogen sulfide and methyl mercaptan were lower than the permissible limits. Mean ammonia concentration measured at the boundary of B piggery in Hwaseong city was 16.3 ppm and steep increase of concentration was monitored after October when the barn was sealed up. Hydrogen sulfide and methyl mercaptan were 26.66 ppb and 7.45 ppb, respectively. In appropriate ventilation and raising environment would cause high ammonia concentration in swine barns. Emitted ammonia from barns and composting facilities were mixed, which would cause higher ammonia concentration on the boundary of barns. Hence improvement of raising environment, rapid manure treatment, and correct use of microbial preparation would be needed.

There was a study for biological characteristics, except for physico-chemical and mineralogical properties, on the natural bentonite that is considered as a buffer material for the high-level radioactive waste disposal site. A bentonite slurry that was prepared from a local 'Gyeongju bentonite' in Korea was incubated in a serum bottle with nutrient media over 1 week and its stepwise change was observed with time. From the activated bentonite in the nutrient media, we can find a certain change of both solid and liquid phases. Some dark and fine sulfides began to be generated from dissolved sulfate solution, and 4 species of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) were identified as living cells in samples that were periodically taken and incubated. These results show that sulfate-reducing (or metal-reducing) bacteria are adhering and existing in the powder of bentonite, suggesting that there may be a potential occurrence of longterm biogeochemical effects in and around the bentonite buffer in underground anoxic environmental conditions.

A quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) sensor system for the detection of odorants, especially environmental pollutant, has been constructed by depositing various phospholipids, activated carbon and lead compound pigment onto the surface of the QCM. The characteristics of a QCM operating at 9 MHz deposited with phosphatidyl- choline were analysed. An explanation is given for different odorant affinities based on the monolayer properties of phospholipids. The identification of odorants is discussed in terms of a comparison of their normalized resonant frequency shift patterns and relative response intensities calculated from the response areas. Applying the lead compound pigment coated QCM, it was possible to detect sulfur compound specifically. Using a number of different lipid-coated QCMs, odorants could be identified by comparing the response patterns.

This study was carried on the phenomena in reactivity with the clay surface according to the thickness of the cobalt component coating. In the coated specimen, it was observed that the cobalt component was spreaded to diffuse with a constant thickness from the surface of it and the diffusion layer at the white porcelain soil was more increased with the increase of the amount of cobalt sulfate than at the celadon porcelain one. It was evaluated that the color of the surface on the coated specimen at the white porcelain soil was changed from grayish blue to blue and the $L^*$ value was decreased from 51.78 to 37.61 and also in the case of the coated specimen in celadon porcelain soil, $L^*$ value was from 53.91 to 38.93 and the color was from dark olive gray to dark gray. The physical properties of the specimen were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Scanning electron microscope, Dilatometer, TG-DTA, UV-vis spectrophotometer and HRDPM.
Effects of the sediments on water quality, and the consequent survival and growth of cultured fleshy prawns, Penaeus chil1ensis were determined under selected sediment types for 6 weeks. Dissolved oxygen was 5.1-5.9 mgll in both the sediments containing sand alone, and soft sand (50%) and mud (50%). It decreased to 4.6 mgll in the mud after 6 weeks. Nitrite, ammonia and hydrogen sulfide of the seawater were 0.07-0.12, 0.16-0.29 and 0.009~0.014 mgll in both the sediments containing sand alone, and soft sand (50%) and mud (50%). The values, however, increased to 0.15, 0.36 and 0.018 mgll in the mud sediment, respectively. Survival of the prawn was below 60% in bare and mud sediments. It was above 70% in both the sediments containing sand alone, and soft sand (50%) and mud (50%). Growth and food efficiency of the prawn were significantly lower in the 100 % sand than in the sediment containing soft sand (50%) and mud (50%).
To understand characteristics of biogeochemical corrosion for the metal canisters that usually contain the radioactive wastes for a long-term period below the ground, some metal materials consisting of cast iron and copper were reacted for 3 months with D. desulfuricans, a sulfate-reducing bacterium, under a reducing condition. During the experiment, concentrations of dissolved metal ions were periodically measured, and then metal specimen and surface secondary products were examined using the electron microscopy to know the chemical and mineralogical changes of the original metal samples. The metal corrosion was not noticeable at the absence of D. desulfuricans, but it was relatively greater at the presence of the bacterium. In our experiment, darkish metal sulfides such as mackinawite and copper sulfide were the final products of biogeochemical metal corrosion, and they were easily scaled off the original specimen and suspended as colloids. For the copper specimen, in particular, there appeared an accelerated corrosion of copper in the presence of dissolved iron and bacteria in solution, probably due to a weakening of copper-copper binding caused by a growth of other phase, iron sulfide, on the copper surface.

Fe, Ni and Co, typical active components, were dispersed on $Al_2O_3$ and $TiO_2$ for $SO_3$ decomposition. $SO_3$ decomposition was conducted at the temperature ranges from $750^{\circ}C$ to $950^{\circ}C$ using the prepared catalysts. Alumina based catalysts showed the surface areas higher than Titania based catalysts, which resulted from spinel structure formation of alumina based catalysts. Catalytic $SO_3$ decomposition reaction rates were in the order of Fe>Co${\gg}$Ni. The metal sulfate decomposition temperature were in the order of Ni>Co>Fe from TGA/DTA analysis of metal sulfate. During $SO_3$ decomposition, metal sulfate can form on the catalysts. $SO_2$ and $O_2$ can be produced from the decomposition of metal sulfate. In that point of view, the less is the metal sulfate deomposition temperature, the higher can be the $SO_3$ decomposition activity of the metal component. Therefore, it can be concluded that metal component with the low metal sulfate decomposition temperature is the pre-requisite condition of the catalysts for $SO_3$ decomposition reaction.
