Synthesis of High Functionalized Anion Exchange Fibers Using Hybrid Polyolefine by $\gamma-Ray$ Mutual Radiation (방사선 동시조사법을 이용한 고관능성 Hybrid Polyolefine 음이온교환섬유의 합성)

  • Ion exchange fibers, high functionalized onto hybrid polyolefine fiber's surface, were synthesized by $\gamma-ray$ mutual radiation. Degree of grafting (DG) of copolymer increased with increasing GMA monomer concentration and the maximum rate of DG was 355% at 50 GMA. The graft reaction occurred in polar solvent and DG was 190% maximum value in $1.0\times10^{-3}$ Mohr's salt and 0.1 M sulfuric acid, respectively. The amination for graft copolymers varied depending on amine reagents, and the reactivity for copolymers was highest for methylamine, and that of triethylamine lowest. It was shown that water uptake and ion exchange capacities increased with increase in the rate of amination while surface area decreased rapidly as proceeding for graft reaction and amination.

Ettringite/Thaumasite Formation, Stability and Their Effect on Deterioration of Concrete (에트린자이트/사우마사이트의 형성 및 안정도와 콘크리트 성능저하에 미치는 영향)

  • Ettringite and thaumasite were observed in some concrete. The morphology and occurrence of these minerals were closely examined by performing SEM/EDAX analyses. We also experimentally induced the concrete deterioration using $Na_2SO_4$ solution with application of various environmental conditions. The stability of these minerals and deterioration characteristics under applied experimental conditions were determined. Abundant ettringite formed by“through solution reaction”occurred in many open spaces, and some microscopic ettringite formed by "tophochemical replacement" of calcium aluminate also occurred in cement paste. Severe cracking of cement paste causing premature deterioration was often associated with ettringite location. Under specific condition, ettringite was transformed to thaumasite, tricthloroaluminate, or decomposed. Thaumasite occurred with association of ettrinsite in concrete containing carbonate aggregate being subject to dedolomitization or in some concrete being subject to carbonation. Thaumasite appears to be formed under the similar condition to the general ettringite forming condition, but it formed solid solution with ettringite by substituting pre-existing ettringite. Ettringite can also be transformed to trichloroaluminate in the presence of abundant chlorides, but trichloroaluminate changed back to ettringite in late sulfate attack. It is considered that the substitution reaction direction solely depend on the concentration of chloride and sulfate ion.

Synthesis of High Purity Al2O3 from Low Grade Bauxite Ore(I) -Extraction of Al Component by the Decomposition of Bauxite Ore with Ammonium Sulfate- (저품위 Bauxite로부터 고순도 Al2O3의 합성(I) -Bauxite의 황산암모늄분해에 의한 Al 성분의 추출-)

  • A decomposition reaction of bauxite ore with $(NH_4)_2SO_4$ was investigated to prepare Al component pregnant solution for the direct product of high purity $Al_2O_3$ from low grade bauxite ore. Al component in the bauxite was sulfatized to $NH_4Al(SO_4)_2$ or $Al_2(SO_4)_3$ in this decomposition. The optimum conditions of the decomposition for bauxite ore were reaction temperature of $425^{\circ}C$, reaction time of 40min, $(NH_4)_2SO_4$ weight ratio to bauxite of 7.0 and particle size of bauxite ore of -200mesh. The optimum leaching conditions of sulfated bauxite ore were leaching temperature of $100^{\circ}C$, leaching time of 1hr and pulp density of 200ml $H_2O$ to sulfated ore of 1.0g bauxite. Under the above mentioned decomposition and leaching conditions, 94% of Al component in the bauxite ore was extracted.

  • 산업의 고도화 및 도시의 집중화로 오염물질의 종류가 다양화 되었으며 여러 가지 오염물질 중에서도 비산 분진, 황산화물(SOx) 등은 연료 중의 특정성분을 제거하거나 연료를 대체하여 그 배출량을 줄일 수 있다. 그러나 질소산화물(NOx)의 경우에는 연료의 문제가 아니라 연소과정에서 반드시 발생되는 특징을 가진 오염물질이다. 이와 같이 환경오염물질의 제거기술에 있어 가장 중요하게 고려되어야 할 사항은 오염가스 제거의 효율성과 경제성이다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 사무실, 가정 등 주로 실내공기정화를 위하여 NOx 제거를 위한 선 대 평판형 플라즈마 반응기에 자석의 개수에 의한 자계세기 및 자속밀도 시뮬레이션과 도출된 시뮬레이션 결과를 바탕으로 제작된 반응기에 자석을 부가한 NOx 제거에 대한 실험을 하였다. 그 결과 자석을 부가한 경우가 NOx 제거효과에 있어 효율이 좋음을 알 수 있었다.

The Synthesis of Hydrated Aluminum Sulfate from Kaolin Using Microwave Energy (카올린으로부터 마이크로파 에너지를 이용한 무기고분자인 수화 황산 알루미늄의 합성)

  • Hydrated aluminum sulfate, an inorganic polymer, was synthesized from kaolin in $H_2SO_4$ solution using microwave energy. The maximum rates of alumina extracted from calcined kaolin were 72.8% in a conventional process ($80^{\circ}C$, 1M, and 180min) and 99.9% in a microwave process ($90^{\circ}C$, 1M, and 60 min). Compared with the conventional one, the hydrated aluminum sulfate synthesized under the microwave process had layer structure consisting of plate-shaped large grains. After synthesis and then calcination at $1100^{\circ}C$, both products on conventional and microwave processes were ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ with agglomerated powders of spherical shape. The specific area of the products in conventional and microwave processes were 113.5 and $106.6m^2/g$, and their average grain sizes were 46.5 an $26.3{\mu}m$, respectively.

  • The effect of Mn(II) concentration on the anodic reactions occurring on a Pb-Ag electrode in sulfuric acid solutions has been studied by potentiostatic oxidation in the potential range of 1.8 to 2.0 V. High oxidation potentials and low initial concentrations of Mn(II) resulted in higher concentrations of soluble Mn(III) ions which were obtained from spectrophotometric analysis of the solution after oxidation. $MnO_2$ was deposited on the electrode by electrochemical oxidation of Mn(II) at 1.8 and 1.9 V, while it was formed by disproportionation of Mn(III) at 2.0 V. No $PbO_2$ was formed in the presence of Mn(II) during potentiostatic oxidation treatment for two hours at 1.8 V. Chemical reduction of $PbO_2$ with Mn(II) led to a decrease in the amount of $PbO_2$ as Mn(II) concentration increased at 1.9 and 2.0 V.

  • In this study, amine derivatives and ion exchange resins were selected to actively control penetration ions ($SO{_4}^{2-}$, $Cl^-$) as the element technology of repair materials for concrete structures in drainage environments. Ions ($SO{_4}^{2-}$, $Cl^-$) adsorption performance and corrosion resistance of calcium hydroxide solution with amine derivative and ion exchange resin were confirmed by ion chromatography and potentiostat analysis. As a result of the experiment, it was confirmed that the amine derivative is excellent in the adsorption of chlorine ion and the ion exchange resin is excellent in the adsorption of sulfate ion. It has been confirmed that corrosion resistance can be increased by proper combination of two materials in the calcium hydroxide solution containing sulfate ion and chloride ion simulating sewage environment.

Geomicrobiological Behavior of Heavy Metals in Paddy Soil Near Abandoned Au-Ag Mine Supplied with Carbon Sources (탄소원을 공급한 폐금은광산 주변 논토양 내 중금속의 지구미생물학적 거동 연구)

  • The study was conducted to investigate the effects of indigenous bacteria on geochemical behavior of toxic heavy metals in contaminated paddy soil near an abandoned mine. The effects of sulfate amendment to stimulate microbial sulfate reduction on heavy metal behaviors were also investigated. Batch-type experiments were performed with lactate or glucose as a carbon source to activate indigenous bacteria in the soil under anaerobic condition for 100 days. Sulfate (250 mg/L) was artificially injected at 60 days after the onset of the experiments. In the case of glucose supply, solution pH increased from 4.8 to 7.6 while pH was maintained at 7~8 in the lactate solution. The initial low pH in the case of glucose supply likely resulted in the enhanced extraction of Fe and most heavy metals at the initial experimental period. Lactate supply exerted no significant difference on the amounts of dissolved Zn, Pb, Ni and Cu between microbial and abiotic control slurries; however, lower Zn, Pb and Ni and higher Cu concentrations were observed in the microbial slurries than in the controls when glucose supplied. Sulfate amendment led to dramatic decrease in dissolved Cr and maintenance of dissolved As, both of which had gradually increased over time till the sulfate injection. Black precipitates formed in solution after sulfate amendment, and violarite($Fe^{+2}{Ni^{+3}}_2S_4$) was found with XRD analysis in the microbial precipitates. Conceivably the mineral might be formed after Fe(III) reduction and microbial sulfate reduction with coprecipitation of heavy metal. The results suggested that heavy metals which can be readily extracted from contaminated paddy soils may be stabilized in soil formation by microbial sulfate reduction.

A Study on the Separation of Cerium from Rare Earth Precipitates Recovered from Waste NiMH Battery (폐니켈수소전지에서 회수된 희토류복합 침전분말로부터 세륨 회수에 대한 연구)

  • In order to recover the cerium contained in the spent nickel metal hydride batteries (NiMH battery), the recovered rare earth complex precipitates from NIMH were converted into rare earth hydroxides through ion exchange reaction to react with NaOH aqueous solution at a reaction temperature of 70 ℃, for 4 hours. Rare earth hydroxides were oxidized by injecting air at 80 ℃ for 4 hours to oxidize Ce3+ to Ce4+. The oxidation rate of cerium was confirmed to be about 25 % through XPS, and the oxidized powder was separated from the rest of the rare earth using the difference in solubility in dilute sulfuric acid. The finally recovered powder has a crystal phase of cerium hydroxide (Ce(OH)4). The cerium purity of the final product was about 94.6 %, and the recovery rate was 97.3 %.

The Esterification of Oleic Acid Using Acidic Ionic Liquid Catalysts Immobilized on Silica Gel (실리카겔에 고정화된 산성 이온성 액체 촉매를 이용한 올레산의 에스터화 반응연구)

  • Esterification of free fatty acid with methanol to biodiesel was investigated in a batch reactor using various solid acid catalysts, such as polymer cation-exchanged resins with sulfuric acid functional group(Amberlyst-15, Dowex 50Wx8), acidic ionic liquids (ILs)-modified silica gels respectively with $-SO_3H$ and $-SO_2Cl$ functional group ($SiO_2-[ASBI][HSO_4]$, $SiO_2-[ASCBI][HSO_4]$) and grafted silica gels respectively with $-SO_3H$ and $-SO_2Cl$ functional group ($SiO_2-R-SO_3H$, $SiO_2-R-SO_2Cl$). The effects of reaction time, temperature, reactant concentration(molar ratio of methanol to oleic acid), and catalyst amount were studied. Allylimidazolium-based ILs on modified silica gels were superior to other tested solid acid catalysts. Especially, the performance of $SiO_2-[ASBI][HSO_4]$ (immobilized by grafting of 3-allyl-1-(4-sulfobutyl)imidazolium hydrogen sulfate on silica gel) was better than that of a widely known Amberlyst-15 catalyst at the same reaction conditions. A high conversion yield of 96% was achieved in the esterification reaction of the simulated cooking oil at 353 K for 2 h. The high catalytic activity of $SiO_2-[ASBI][HSO_4]$ was attributed to the presence of strong Brønsted acid sites from the immobilized functional groups. The catalyst was recovered and the biodiesel product was separated by simple processes such as decantation and filtration.
