  • H.264/AVC (baseline profile)은 MPEG-4 (simple profile)에 비하여 약 2배정도 향상된 압축 성능을 나타내는 것으로 알려져, DMB 방송, DVD 등에 사용될 예정이며, 다양한 멀티미디어 서비스에 사용될 차세대 비디오 압축 표준으로 인정받고 있다 하지만, 부호기의 복잡도는 MPEG-4 simple profile에 비하여 16배정도 높아져서, 실시간을 요구하는 서비스, 또는 임베디드 환경을 갖는 서비스에 사용하는데 심각한 제약을 갖는다. 따라서, 기존의 표준 코덱들을 대체하여 다양한 통신 환경에서 향상된 화질의 비디오 서비스를 제공하기 위해서는 코덱의 복잡도 개선이 매우 중요하다. 본 논문은 H.264/AVC 비디오 코덱을 임베디드 환경을 갖는 통신 서비스에 적용하기 위하여 코덱의 복잡도를 개선하기 위한 방법을 제시한다

  • 고해상도 이미지는 거의 대부분 유용하지만 저장용량을 많이 차지한다는 점은 그 유용함에 대한 제약이다. 이를 위한 수많은 용량절감 방식이 있지만 화질저하의 한계점은 육안으로 보기에 원본과 가장 비슷하게 보이는 지점이다. 텍스트 파일은 그 형태가 높은 수준으로 고정되어 있다는 점에 착안하여 육안으로 원본과 비슷하게 보이지 않는 지점까지 손실 저장하더라도 다른 텍스트들과 비교되는 지점까지 가능하다.

  • 영상은 그래픽, 교육,의료 분야의 멀티미디어 정보에서 중요한 역할을 하고 있다. 특히 지문 영상은 정보화 시대에 매우 중요한 정보로서 보안이나 인증 시스템에 널리 쓰이고 있다. 그러나 기존의 시스템에서는 지문 영상의 데이터 양이 많아 지문의 특징 정보만 일부 추출하여 저장하는 방식을 취하고 있어 지문이나 검색 등의 다양한 응용에 제약을 주고 있다. 정지 영상 압축 표준으로는 JPEG이 있지만, 20:1이상의 고압축에서는 많은 부호화 결점들 때문에 그러한 시스템에서의 실제적인 사용은 매우 어렵다. 따라서 고압축을 수행하면서 선명한 화질을 제공하는 지문 영상 압축 코덱 개발이 매우 필요하게 되었다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 요구에 맞게, 최근 새로운 영상 압축 기법으로 등장한 WSQ를 근간으로 하는 FBI 지문 영상 압축 표준을 EK르는 영상 압축 코덱을 개발하였으며, Windows95 환경하에서 동작하는 소프트웨어를 개발하여 실제로 지문 영상을 압축하는데 사용할 수 있도록 하였다. 또한 원래의 FBI 코덱과의 호환성을 유지하면서 코덱의 성능을 향상시키는 기법을 적용하여 원래의 FBI 코덱 보다 성능이 나아진 코덱을 개발하였다. 개발된 지문 영상 압축 코덱은 전자 주민 카드 및 각종 인증 시스템용 코덱으로 활용 가능하다.

Measuring Quality of Experience of Internet Protocol Television (IPTV 체감 품질의 측정)

  • IPTV(Internet Protocol Television) is an innovation technology to lead the new media age. Internet protocol television (IPTV) is a next generation television converged with the Internet which are delivered portal services such as information search, games, movies, home shopping and banking. Generally, service quality affects to adopt or use these technologies. Quality of experience (QoE) is more issue to be considered than service quality because of the technological restriction and limitation that IPTV is accessed by the Internet. The QoE is defined as the cognitive and experienced quality measured with users through an experiment and is conceptually related to service quality. The objective of this paper is to suggest a methodology to measure the QoE of IPTV using a user testing. We find significant factors affecting QoE of IPTV through an exploratory study and measure QoE scores. We found the nine factors of graphics, picture, accuracy, access method, quality of contents, usability, security, and performance important for QoE. The QoE scores of picture, graphics, and quality of contents gained over the average score, but the overall score for IPTV service providers was not high and the QoE needs to be improved.

An Efficient Loop Filter to Improve Visual Quality of H.26L Video Coder (H.26L 동영상 부호화 방식의 화질 개선을 위한 루프 필터)

  • This paper addresses an efficient loop filter algorithm to improve visual quality by simultaneously reducing blocking and ringing artifacts in H.26L video coder. H.26L video coding standard using the different coding mechanism to existing video coding standards has different distribution of blocking and ringing artifacts that is dependent on coding type, quantization step size, and motion vector. Therefore, the information is used to define the filter type and the filter coefficients. and a projection operator is defined to avoid the over-smoothness. In addition, in order to avoid over-smoothing coming from filtering processing, a constraint projection operator is defined. Since the above information is available both in encoder and in the decoder, a loop filter is used, and the algorithm is simplified to reduce the computational cost. Experimental results show the capability of the proposed algorithm.

  • Chroma key technique which composes images by separating an object from its background in specific color has restrictions on color and space. Especially, unlike general chroma key technique, image composition for stereo 3D display requires natural image composition method in 3D space. The thesis attempted to compose images in 3D space using depth keying method which uses high resolution depth information. High resolution depth map was obtained through camera calibration between the DSLR and Kinect sensor. 3D mesh model was created by the high resolution depth information and mapped with RGB color value. Object was converted into point cloud type in 3D space after separating it from its background according to depth information. The image in which 3D virtual background and object are composed obtained and played stereo 3D images using a virtual camera.

  • A present experimental broadcasting is service compatible to delivery left view and right view of a dual stream for backward compatible with 2D device. It has a limitation of quality for a transmission of dual stream in terrestrial bandwidth 19 Mbps. This paper proposes adjunct terrestrial-3D broadcasting system which can provide a stable quality beyond a limitation of quality from fixed bandwidth. It proposes the system that composes a high quality stereoscopic video through synchronizing Real time broadcasting and Non Real Time broadcasting Regardless of the terrestrial bandwidth. So this paper tries to analyze each technique of Real-Time broadcasting and NRT broadcasting, and verify this proposal through the technique of an algorithm that we can implement NRT adjunct high quality 3DTV system and the experiments.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient video streaming system over heterogeneous wireless networks. The proposed system modifies fountain code for the video streaming service and maximizes the target video encoding rate using multiple paths while satisfying delay and block recovery failure rate constraints of fountain code. Finally, the proposed system provides the seamless video streaming service of high quality to subscribers by dynamic adaptation of control parameters based on the states of each path over heterogeneous wireless networks.

  • The rapid development of information & communication technology has changed the paradigm of education. Recently the area of education is introducing u-Learning, in which learning is possible at any time and in any place through personal information devices such as PDA, tablet PC and mobile phone terminals. Taking advantage of the mobility and individuality of personal information devices, u-Learning can provide learning customized to the characteristics of individual learners without the limitations of time and space and can be effective in situational learning and experiential learning. In order to identify the uses of PDA in teaching.learning and to develop a basic teachinglearning model using PDA, the present study applied PDA directly to classes and examined the effects. According to the result, most students were satisfied with classes utilizing PDA but problems were also found in connection, insufficient contents for PDA, the quality of screen, etc.

EFFICIENT SPECKLE NOISE FILTERING OF SAR IMAGES (SAR 영상의 SPECKLE 잡음 제거)

  • Any classification process using SAR images presupposes the reduction of multiplicative speckle noise, since the variations caused by speckle make it extremely difficult to distinguish between neighboring classes within the feature space. Therefore, several adaptive filter algorithms have been developed in order to distinguish between them. These algorithms aim at the preservation of edges and single scattering peaks, and smooths homogeneous areas as much as possible. This task is rendered more difficult by the multiplicative nature of the speckle noise the signal variation depends on the signal itself. In this paper, LEE(Lee 1908) and R-LEE(Lee 1981) filters using local statistics, local mean and variance, are applied to RADARSAT SAR images. Also, a new method of speckle filtering, EPOS(Edge Preserving Optimal Speckle)(Hagg & Sties 1994) filter based on the statistical properties of speckle noise is described and applied. And then, the results of filtering SAR images with LEE, R-LEE and EPOS filters are compared with mean and median filters.
