  • This study examined effects of the wall thermal conductivity coefficients on the thermal fluid phenomenon of a compartment fire. The reduced scale compartment was 0.4 m in width, 0.6 m in length and 0.6 m in height with a fire-board, which has a thermal conductivity coefficient of $0.18W/m{\cdot}K$. The local temperature at a 0.37 m height and the overall heat release rate were measured under the following experiment conditions: a $0.12m^2$ opening area and $0.01m^2$ pool size of a gasoline fire. The numerical results obtained by the Fire Dynamic Simulation were compared with the experimentally measured temperature. The deviations were within 10 % in the period of the steady state for maximum heat release rate (4.8 kW). The numerical results show that the average temperature of the compartment wall decreases by approximately 71 % with increasing thermal conductivity coefficient from $0.1W/m{\cdot}K$ to $100.0W/m{\cdot}K$ on the fixed heat release rate.

  • In this study, comparative analysis on the back-layer phenomena in the tunnel-fire driven flow is performed using numerical simulation with LES and RANS. FDS(Fire Dynamics Simulator) code is employed to calculate the fire-driven turbulent flow for LES and Smartfire code is used for RANS. Hwang and Wargo's data of scaling tunnel fire experiment are employed to compare with the present numerical simulation. The modeled tunnel is 5.4m(L) ${\times}$ 0.4m(W) ${\times}$ 0.3m(H). Heat Release Rate (HRR) of fire is 3.3kW and ventilation-velocity is 0.33m/s in the main stream. The various grid-distributions are systematically tested with FDS code to analyze the effects of grid size. The LES method with FDS provides an improved back-layer flow behavior in comparison with the RANS (${\kappa}-{\epsilon}$) method by Smartfire. The FDS solvers, however, overpredict the velocity in the center region of flow which is caused by the defects in the tunnel-entrance turbulence strength and in the near-wall turbulent flow in FDS code.

  • The smoke filling process for the atrium space containing a fire source is simulated using two types of deterministic fire model : Zone model and Field model. The zone model used is the CFAST(version 1.6) model developed at the Building and Fire Research Laboratories, NIST in the USA. The field model is a self-developed frie field model based on Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) theories. This article is focused on finding out the smoke movement and temperature distribution in atrium space which is cubic in shape. For solving the liked set of velocity and pressure equation, the PISO algorithm, which strengthened the velocity-pressure coupling, was used. Since PISO algorithm is a time-marching procedure, computing time si very fast. A computational procedure for predicting velocity and temperature distribution in fire-induced flow is based on the solution, in finite volume method and non-staggered grid system, of 3-dimensional equations for the conservation of mass, momentum, energy, species and so forth. The fire model i.e Zone model and Field model predicted similar results for clear heights and the smoke layer temperature.

  • From the beginning of the construction stage, the fire protection regulation for the nuclear power plants conforms to the design requirements for the acquisition of the license permit. This regulation is based on the plant status of the normal operation, but it is not enough to be used as an application standard for fire protection at the transient mode of the plant and the outage time for refueling as well as for the plant decommissioning. While the advanced fire protection requirement that has been developed in America recently suggests the performance-based requirement and management rule applicable to the overall life time of the plant, it simply represents the conceptual application. It means that it can not be treated as appropriate standards because it does not deal with the qualitative and quantitative approach in specific ways. By the way, with the use of the performance-based fire risk analysis, the dynamic behavior of the heat and smoke at the fire compartment of the nuclear power plants can be analyzed and the thermal effect to the safety-related equipment and cables can be evaluated as well. At this paper, it suggests the ways to change the applicable fire protection regulations and the required evaluation items for the fire risk resulted from the plant configuration change with an intent to introduce the state-of-the-art quantitative fire risk analysis technology at the domestic nuclear power plants.

  • In case of a fire inside a tunnel, unlike ordinary roads, it is very difficult for a driver to obtain visibility, and a large accident is highly likely to occur. In this study, the smoke behavior, visible distance, and CO concentration of a jet fan were analyzed using the NIST fire simulation (FDS). All analyses were set to HRRPUA (Heat Release Rate Per Area) 3.6MW/m and all the analysis times were set to 600s. In all analyses by CFD, the results were confirmed at y=30m and y=110m, and smoke behavior analysis, visible range analysis, and carbon monoxide concentration were confirmed according to the diameter and flow rate. As the size and flow rate of the jet fan increased, the visibility distance was high at y=30m, and the concentration of carbon monoxide was also confirmed to be 0 ppm. Therefore, proper setting of the jet fan diameter and flow rate will be an excellent solution for fires in tunnels, and taking refuge at upstream area of a re-ventilated fan can reduce the number of casualties.

  • A numerical analysis was done for a tunnel fire in a 1000m road tunnel. A cartesian coordinate was adopted to make a computational grid sytem which has 448,000 computational cells. A transient flow phenomena in the tunnel was simulated by the commercial code of PHEONICS from the ignition of fire to 600 seconds by the interval of 100 seconds. Total computational time of about 44 hours was required to get a convered solution in each time step. The purpose of this research is to analyze of the backlayering pheonomena and recirculation flow in a tunnel. The compuational results say that the backlayering does not happens near the fire of vehicle in this case because the vehicle fire is located at the outside of recirculation zone of flow ocuured near the jet fan. In this research, onset of backlayering pheonomena could be escaped if jet fan is set 95m in front of the the fire of vehicle.

  • The subway used by many passengers is required to maintain a safe and comfortable environment and PSD (Platform Screen Door) must be installed in the platform after reinforcing the standard in 2003. In the previous research, in case of subway fire to control it, it is necessary to design the optimal ventilation and smoke exhaust system according to equipment capacity of the smoke exhaust system. Therefore, in this study, based on the results of previous research, three-dimensional numerical analysis was performed for the CO gas and smoke flow by the subway ventilation system in case of platform fire. As a result of this study, it was found that in case of emergency, if only the upper-level smoke exhaust system is activated, the risk of evacuation is high due to CO gas (653.8 ppm) and smoke concentration ($768.4mg/m^3$). And when all the smoke exhaust systems are activated and only the fire side PSD is opened, CO gas (36.0 ppm) and smoke concentration ($26.2mg/m^3$) are detected and the propagation range of smoke flow was reduced. When all the smoke exhaust systems are activated and only the fire side PSD is closed, it was analyzed as the most effective ventilation mode in the evacuation environment due to the absence of smoke-recirculation.

  • In this study, scenarios based on the leakage of highly compressed air and fire occurrence turned out to be high risks in an operation stage of CAES facility were constructed and estimated. By combining Bernoulli equation with momentum equation, an expression to calculate an impact force of a jet flow of compressed air was derived. An impact force was found to be proportional to the square of diameter of fracture and the pressure of compressed air. Four types of fire scenarios were composed to evaluate an effects that seasonal change and location of fire source have on the spread behavior of smoke. Smoke from the fire ignited in the vicinity of CAES opening descended more quickly below the limit line of breathing than one from the fire occurred 10 m away from CAES opening, which is expected to occur due to a propagation of wave front of smoke. It was shown that a rate of smoke spread of the winter fire is faster than one of the summer fire and smoke from the winter fire spreads farther than one of the summer fire, which are dependent on the direction of air flow into access opening. Evacuation simulation indicated that the required safe evacuation time(RSET) of the summer and winter fires are 262, 670 s each.

  • The numerical analyses for each single simplified shaft with three type openings were carried out by using computational fluid dynamics model for the calculation of the pressure difference and the location of the neutral plane and the visualization of stack effect. As the height of shaft heighten, the pressure difference of stack effect is much deviated against the theoretical value. For the Type A models shorter than 30 m height of shaft and the Type B models longer than 30m, the simulation results for the location of the neutral plane are well agreed to the theoretical values with 5% less deviations just after the beginning of simulation (t = 10s). For the Type B models longer than 30m with multiple openings, therefore, it is possible to calculate the location of the neutral plane by using a CFD model. The phenomenon of the air flow of stack effect can be easily understood with the visualization of stack effect.

  • In the present study a pre/post-processor program has been developed to be used with a general CFD code. This program is capable of performing the basic functions of the pre/post-processing, which include mesh generation and post processing plots. Also through perspective projection, this program can be used to check the quality of generated mesh by moving around inside the mesh. The smoke visualization can be also performed with the present program to visualize the smoke behavior in the case of fire simulation. The examples of the program execution are given in paper.
