  • This study investigates the effect of organic certification of apples on consumer preference in China as a way to support the expanded export of Korean apples to China. A choice experiment was designed to analyze the apple consumption in China. A total of 298 Chinese consumers answered the survey, and multinomial logit models were used to analyze the results. Organic certification was identified as an important determinant of consumer preference for apples in China, affecting both the evaluation and choice of country of origin. The results also indicated that Korean organic certification significantly increased the probability of Chinese consumers choosing Korean apples. Thus, organic certification by the Korean government should be strengthened to promote apple exports to China, plus the results of this study may provide useful information to promote agricultural product exports and improve the organic certification system.

  • It is as necessary as ever to make constant efforts to overcome the regional strife between the eastern and western parts of Korea and come to a mutual understanding. To achieve this, we must endeavor to correct Korean people's distorted understanding of the history of Korean philosophical thoughts. Ordinary Koreans commonly and mistakenly associate the academic circles of Korean Neo-Confucianism with certain regions by which to divide them into Giho School and Yongnam School and then go as far as associating the schools and parties and pegging them 'Namin'(南人) to refer to as the followers of Yongnam School and 'Seoin'(西人) as the followers of Giho School. Such false notions must be corrected. During the reign of King Seonjo, political factions of Joseon were split into Yongnam and Giho, or East and West. At the time, the two cardinal directions East and West were only used to refer to the eastern and western parts of Seoul, and not Yeongnam(East) and Giho(West) of the Korean Peninsula. Therefore, the factional split at the time has nothing to do with regional cleavages. In fact, a majority of scholars representing Korean Neo-Confucianism maintained a friendly relationship regardless of the school, party, and region. Many leading scholars in the middle of the Joseon Dynasty namely Jo Sik(曺植)/Seong Woon(成運), Lee Hwang(李滉)/Ki DeaSeung(奇大升), Lee Hwang(李滉)/Lee Yi(李珥), Noh Susin (盧守愼)/Lee Yi, the ones in the late Joseon Dynasty -Jeong Gyeong Se(鄭經 世)/Kim Jang-Saeng(金長生), Jeong Gyeong Se(鄭經世)/Song Joon Gil(宋浚吉), and also those at the end of the Joseon Dynasty such as Kwak JongSeok(郭鍾錫) and Kim BokHan(金福漢) deeply respected each other and had a close friendship rooted in their academic commitment. The friendship between the leaders of Giho and Yongnam is a testimony to the high level of their character, academic achievement, and intellect. More than ever, such intangible intellectual and cultural resources drawn from Korean tradition must be utilized to the fullest. From this point on, we need to further promote the friendship and mutual understanding the scholars of Yongnam(Gyeongsang-do), Gyeonggi, Honam (Jeolla-do), and Hoseo(Chungcheong-do) enjoyed, and use them as a cognitive basis for harmony between the eastern and western parts of the country. These invaluable assets can be specifically used in the promotion of exchange between the local autonomous governments of the regions where above-mentioned scholars built an amicable relationship, joint commemorative events, exchange between families of the scholars of both regions, opening of special exhibitions dedicated to the harmony between Yongnam and Giho at museums in the two regions, co-organization of local festivals, joint operation of culture programs, and relationship and exchange between the 'seowons' in both regions, through which to promote the long history of exchange between the scholars of the past and utilize it in joint projects.

  • This study was intended to investigate the alcohol drinking characteristics, Makgeolli drinking behavior, and perception of Makgeolli focusing on the Chinese students studying in Korea. 550 copies of self-administrated questionnaire for a survey were distributed from May 2nd to June 30th, 2012, and then 461 copies were adopted for the analyses. The drinking frequency and drinking amount at a time increased as the length of stay in Korea and monthly pocket money increased, and Makgeolli was second preferred, following beer. 97.5% of the students experienced drinking Makgeolli, the drinking rate and drinking amount of Makgeolli increased with the length of stay in Korea, and they mostly drank at restaurants and bars. Common motivations for drinking Makgeolli were taste and atmosphere while drinking it, and bad taste and headache were the most common reasons for disliking Makgeolli. The awareness of commercial Makgeolli types was low, and for the price and health promoting effects of Makgeolli, 92.4% and 85.8% of the students replied positively, respectively. These results suggest that the development of high quality Makgeolli adapted to the tastes of Chinese and relieving hangover, and advertising the health benefits would promote Makgeolli consumption in Chinese market.

The trekking accident prevention training course has not been widely publicized. Only 23.4 % of the survey respondents have participated the training course. The training course itself appears to be useful in that 51.1 % of the course participants positively responded the contents of the course, suggesting that, if well publicized, the program can help prevent trekking accident. The trekking time regulation was relatively well publicized. Of the survey respondents, 72.4 % were aware of this regulation, and 72.2 % of them agreed on applying this regulation to other national parks. Accident vulnerability analysis shows that respondents who were aware of the regulation tend to be more experienced and skilled in trekking and more prepared for accident than those who were not. Also, respondents who were satisfied more on park safety facilities tend to be more experienced and skilled in trekking and more prepared for accident.

The result of the analysis showed that the public awareness and the awareness level of the natural monuments were low and that the motivations for visiting were the experience and education of nature, rest and leisure, and experience of the cultural heritage, in that order. The analysis of motivation for visiting according to the awareness level showed that the group with a high awareness level of the Marsh Plants or the group that thought highly of its cultural asset value tended to visit it more for the experience of nature or the experience of the cultural heritage than for simple resting. For usage, the visitors required the basic amenities such as guide board and the more active promotion. They also preferred the discovery of traditional resources using the marsh plants and the experience of nature. Both local residents and outside visitors pointed out the lack of systematic management policy and lack of communication with local residents as the main problems. They recognized that the policy that balanced the preservation and usage through the cooperation of various stakeholder including local residents must be established and applied in the field to ensure proper management.

  • The 88 Olympic Park is a monumental urban park in Seoul, developed to commemorate South Korea's hosting of the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games. Initially conceived to emphasize the event slogan, 'Cultural Olympics,' which was driven by the Korean government, the park, already designed and constructed by 1986, was reconfigured into a sculpture park following two international outdoor sculpture Olympiads and an invitational sculpture exhibition. This study takes a look at the process of redesigning the park into sculpture park and the socio-political discussions surrounding such a process, in order to reconsider the significance of the 88 Seoul Olympic Park with regards to Korean landscape architectural history. Several discussions within Korean society arose during the redesign process. First, there were critiques on the artwork selection during the early phase of the project. Second, issues regarding the conservation of the national heritage site, Mongchon-tosung, located within the park, gave rise to a larger discourse on heritage preservation in Seoul. Third, discussions regarding the formation of the park identity, or lack thereof, prevalent. Through this study, the 88 Seoul Olympic Park presents itself as an example where large park construction in Seoul caused discussions regarding globalization, nationalism, publicness and art to be brought forth. This paper concludes that the 88 Seoul Olympic Park is a cultural landscape that requires further examination and exploration as it provides rich historical context for understanding the history of cultural and artistic practices in Korean urban landscapes.
