Fly ash and betonite samples were selected and characteristics of them were investigated. Fly ash was found to be similar to bentonite in particle size distribution but quite different in microstructure. The most special aspect of fly ash was high alkalinity of its solution. Distribution coefficients of Cs and Co on the samples were measured to survey the effects of mixing. Fly ash showed higher distribution coefficient of Co than that of Cs. Through various experiments, factors affecting the distribution coefficients of Co and Cs on mixture of bentonite and fly ash were identified. Comparison of the distribution coefficients of Cs on fly ash and bentonite mixture with those on sand and bentonite mixture suggests that fly ash would be useful as an efficient additive of backfill material if pertinent mixing ratio was chosen.
This study was conducted to find out the adequate cutting method for propagation and the optimum treat-ing time of GA$_3$ to enhance the fruit setting of Pepino (Solanum muricatum AIT). Mixture of peat moss (50%) and vermiculite (50%) shows the best rooting for the Pepino stem cuttings. An active rooting was observed 15 days after the cuttings were treated with 1,000 ppm of NAA. Application of GA$_3$ at flowering stage was effective for fruit setting of Pepino and fruit setting was the most satisfactory when GA$_3$ was sprayed over the flowers.
Debris flow is defined as water mixture flow with wide range of large size soil particles such as rock, gravel and sand. Localized heavy rain, derived from abnormal weather, results in the debris flow which generally occurs in summer, especially during and after rainy season and typhoon. This study focuses on the characteristics of impact force of the debris flow with different gravels and gravel mixtures by model experiment. Based on measured experiment results, it is found that the impact force derived by debris flow is mot proportional to the amount of dry material mixture, but depends on the particle size distribution of the debris flow.
Research was initiated to investigate germination vigor, number of leaves, plant height and turfgrass density. A total of 18 treatment combinations were used in the study. Treatments were made of soil organic amendment(SOA), sand, and water-absorbing polymer. Germination vigor, leaf number, plant height and turfgrass density were evaluated in Kentucky bluegrass(KB) grown under greenhouse conditions. Significant differences were observed in germination vigor, leaf number, plant height and turfgrass density among 18 mixtures of SOA and polymer. Highest germination rate was associated with mixture of SOA 20% + sand 80% + polymer 0%, resulting in 56.3% for KB. Number of leaves at 60 DAS(days after seeding) were greater with KB over PR, while plant height higher with PR over KB. Leaf number increased with SOA, being SOA 20% > SOA 100% > SOA 10% and with polymer from 0 to 12%. Plant height was greatest with SOA 20% and lowest with SOA 100%. Greater density was observed with PR rather than KB due to longer plant height. Turf density was best under SOA 10% and poorest under SOA 100% in KB. A further research would be required for investigating the individual effect of K-SAM, Ca, perlite on the turf growth characteristics.
In winter season, the pore water inside the ground freezes and thaws repetitively due to the cold air temperature. When the freezing-thawing processes are repeated on the ground, the change in soil particle structure occurs and thus the damage of the infrastructure may be following. This study was performed in order to investigate the stiffness change of soils due to the freeze-thaw by using elastic waves. Sand-silt mixtures are prepared with in the silt fraction of 40 %, 60 % and 80 % in weight and in the degree of saturation of 40 %. The specimens are placed into the square freezing-thawing cell by the temping method. For the measurement of the elastic waves, a pair of the bender elements and a pair of piezo disk elements are installed on the cell, and a thermocouple is inserted into soils for the measurement of the temperature. The temperature of the mixtures is decreased from $20^{\circ}C$ to $-10^{\circ}C$ during freezing, is maintained at $-20^{\circ}C$ for 18 hours, is gradually increased up to the room temperature of $20^{\circ}C$ to thaw the specimens. The shear waves, the compressional waves and the temperature are measured during the freeze-thaw process. The experimental result indicates that the shear and the compressional wave velocities after thawing are smaller than those of before freezing. The velocity ratio of after thawing to before freezing of shear wave is smaller than that of the compressional wave. As silt fraction increases from 40 % to 80 %, the shear and compressional wave velocities are gradually increased. This study suggests that the freezing-thawing process in unsaturated soil loosens the soil particle structure, and the shear wave velocity reflects the effect of freezing-thawing more sensitively than the compressional wave velocity.
Research was initiated to compare establishment vigor, uniformity, rooting potential and turf quality in sods of cool-season grasses (CSG). Several turfgrasses grown under pure sand soil were tested. Establishment vigor, uniformity, rooting potential and turf quality were evaluated in the study. Turfgrass entries were comprised of three blends from Kentucky bluegrass (KB, Poa pratensis L.), perennial ryegrass (PR, Lolium perenne L.), and tall fescue (TF, Festuca arundinacea Schreb.), respectively and three mixtures among them. Differences by treatments were significantly observed in establishment vigor, uniformity, rooting potential and turf quality. Early establishment vigor was mainly influenced by germination speed, being fastest with PR, intermediate with TF and slowest with KB. In a late stage of growth, however, it was affected more by growth habit, resulting in highest with KB and slowest with TF. There were considerable variations in sod uniformity among turfgrasses. Best uniformity among monostand sods was associated with KB, while poorest one with TF. PR sod produced intermediate uniformity between KB and TF. The uniformity of polystand sods of CSG mixtures was inferior to that of monostands of KB, PR and TF, due to characteristics of mixtures comprised of a variety of color, density, texture and growth habit. The greatest potential of sod rooting was found with PR and the poorest with KB. Intermediate potential between PR and KB was associated with TF. In CSG mixtures, it was variable, depending on turfgrass mixing rates. Generally, the higher the PR in mixtures, the greater the sod rooting potential. At the time of sod harvest, however, turfgrass quality of KB was superior to that of PR. because of its characteristics of uniform surface, high density and good mowing quality. These results suggest that a careful expertise based on turf quality as well as sod characteristics like establishment vigor, uniformity and rooting potential be strongly required for the success of golf course or athletic field in establishment.
In order to meet the new requirements for landfill materials, this study planned a study to apply mixed soil of mixing bottom ash and coastal dredged soil to the dredged ground. Coal ash generated from thermal power plant is divided into fly ash and bottom ash. In the case of fly ash, many studies have been conducted because small particles causes permeability coefficient to be small during recycling so no problem has been raised in the environmental area but the utilization of bottom ash has been limited because environmental problems have been raised during recycling due to its larger particle size and greater permeability coefficient. According to recently published studies, however, the results of the study that conducted the water analysis of leachate generated in the ground improvement section using bottom ash showed that heavy metal contamination levels were found to be within the reference value and no significant environmental problems were found so utilization of bottom ash is evaluated to increase significantly in the future. This bottom ash has the particle size of sand and only transportation costs need to be considered when providing materials because the majority has been disposed and it is judged as the most suitable material in dredging landfill in the economic aspect because most thermal power plants are located in the coast and transportation costs can be reduced by ship. Also, research on mixed soil that can maximize the effect of the construction period and construction cost savings than dredged soil is determined as needed because the demand for coastal dredging reclamation is increasing such as Saemangeum project etc. Therefore, we studied self-weight consolidation characteristics depending on sample processing and mixing method of mixed soil by carrying out interior self-weight consolidation experiments on mixed soil of mixing bottom ash and Kaolinite according to the new development needs of recent coastal reclaimed ground and these result findings are expected to be used as basic data when applying the large coastal dredged ground in the future.
To develope cost-effective new granular formulation of mixture with 7.0% chlomethoxyfen and 3.5% butachlor, this study was conducted by investigation of floatability, dispersibility or collapsability and released concentration of active ingredients in water and bio-efficacies of the granules formulated by different formulation methods compared to commercial pellet-extruded granules. They were formulated by coating on or impregnation into extruded pellets, sands and zeolites with two active ingredients, binders, friction reducer, dispersing agents and bentonite. Pellet-coated method showed similar floatability, collapsability and bio-efficacy to the commercial pellet-extruded one or better than that but unstable patterns of released concentration of chlomethoxyfen because of easy isolation of coated technical particles from the surface of granules. Sand-coated methods showed similar physical properties, released pattern of two active ingredients, and bio-efficacy to the commercial one. Liquid binders and/or dispersing agents are more important than powdered ones to control released concentration of active ingredients from the granule mixtures, to improve the floatability and dispersibility, and to show good bio-efficacy. Sand-coated one might be a suitable method if types and amount of liquid binders and dispersing agents are selected.
In this study, analysis of the flow of water in the soil environment was attempted to examine the changing patterns of permeability coefficient, k, presented in Darcy's law depending on soil particle size and the pattern of mixed soil that main factor affecting ground water flow in soil environment. In addition, permeability coefficient patterns depending on changes in water temperature and concentration were measured. As a result, the permeability for the soil particle size and mixing pattern is proportional to the size of the particles, and it was also influenced by the porosity depending on the mixed pattern and stratification. Especially compared with the single particle, mixing different sizes samples showed a lower k than the value of smaller single particles. In addition, permeability of groundwater increased with increasing temperature, also permeability decreased depending on the concentration of ions in groundwater. The results of this study were expected to use as meaningful data for the phenomenon reflects the characteristics of the soil to understand mobility of groundwater in soil environment.
In this study, changing characteristics of bed materials downstream of Daecheong Dam by flushing flow was investigated. Flushing flow affected the downstream environment in such a way that the mean diameter of bed material was increased and the standard deviation was decreased. The vertical sorting of bed materials composed of mixed sediment in the sediment box was observed. The surface layer was composed of gravels, and uniform sand material was buried below it. Relative fractions (Di/D50) of the bed material trapped in the box was nearly 1.0 for the bed material coarser than D$_{50}$ at Hyundo gauging station, and was between two values on the bed surface before and after the flushing flow at Bugang gauging station. Ratio of driving force to resisting force for each fraction ($\tau_i^*$) with the faction size maintained constant for the bed material coarser than D$_{50}$ at Hyundo station. At Bugang station, however, it was rapidly decreased. It means that pavement of the surface layer of bed material at Bugang station was developed, with the sediment particles moving downstream uniformly by flushing flow.
