  • A simple layer model based on isophcnal coordinate is applied to the East Sea to examine the dynamics of circulation. The results confirm the existing knowledge about role of inflow-outflow and wind in driving the circulation. It is found, however, that the buoyancy flux generates quite different circulation pattern; it enhances the inflow-outflow driven circulation and has a convective nature. The circulation considering all these effects resembles the schematic one presently known. In the circulation, the intermediate layer is outcropped in the north off the northern boundary, ventilated here and flows cyclonically in the northern part of basin. This water, however, does not flow southward directly because of the strong eastward (separating from the coast) current in the layer above. This water also loses its potential vorticity while traveling around the periphery of the outcropping region and is thus characterized by minimum potential vorticity in the interior of the basin.

  • This study investigates the characteristic spatial patterns and dynamic processes associated with the summertime extreme temperature events in South Korea during the last 20 years (1995~2014) using Self-Organizing Map (SOM). The classified SOM patterns commonly have high temperature and anticyclonic circulation anomalies over South Korea. The two major teleconnection patterns are identified: one is from the subtropical western North Pacific (WNP) affecting to the north and the other is from the North Atlantic (NA) affecting downstream region. The meridional teleconnection pattern is related to the forcing of positive sea surface temperature (SST) anomaly over the WNP. The northward propagating Rossby wave generates the East Asia-Pacific (EAP) pattern to form an anticyclonic circulation anomaly over South Korea. On the other hand, NA SST anomalies generate an eastward Rossby wave train across the Eurasian continent, leading to the development of an anticyclonic circulation anomaly over South Korea. The EAP pattern occurs more frequently in July and August, whereas the midlatitude teleconnection pattern associated with NA SST anomalies develops more frequently in early summer (June).

  • Ocean circulation in the Gulf of Alaska is remarkably constant throughout the year despite of being forced by one of the largest seasonal wind stresses in the world. To explain the small seasonal changes in the transport of Alaska Stream. a set of numerical models is employed. First a diagnostic approach is applied to reproduce circulation from the observed density structure. The results reveals the very small seasonal changes in the Alaska Stream transport. Next a series of the prognostic models is used: a barotropic model. a flat bottom baroclinic model, and baroclinic model with topography. These models reveal the influence of topography and baroclinicity on the ocean's response to the seasonal wind forcing. The intercomparisons of the various model results suggest that the seasonal response of the baroclinic ocean is primary barotropic and the resultant barotropic circulation is weakened by the scattering effect of the bottom topography.

  • This study simulate three-dimensional ocean circulation patterns using the EFDC model in the Kwangyang Bay and Jinju Bay, considering tide, water temperature and salinity. The numerical model results were verified using observed data. The model results well reproduced the observed data. As a result, ocean circulation patterns in the study area show convergence and divergence in the middle area of Noryang waterway and Daebang waterway, the residual flow patterns show typical two-layer circulation. According to the change of the density stratification in the Kwangyang Bay and Jinju Bay, the effect of fresh water is dominant in study area. In the case of Jinju Bay, although it is strongly influenced by the Namgang fresh water, also it is affected by Seomjin River when there is no discharge by Namgang Dam. On the other hand, the stratification of the Kwangyang Bay is relatively enhanced by the discharge of Namgang Dam.

  • The circulation of sea water was simulated by two dimensional tide model using the main four tidal components and permanent current driven by inflow/outflow across open boundaries. According to the residt of tide model, the maximum speed of eastward flow on the Cheju Strait is twice higher than that of westward flow. According to the result of permanent current, the flow of permanent current showing semi-circle pattern in the southern part of Kojedo was due to variation of topography. According to the result of circulation model in the Cheju Strait, eastward flow entering in the southern waters from the Yellow Sea of Korea were dominant, but outflows westward were weak. These results suggest that it was difficult to move for suspended particulate matter into the Yellow sea from the southern waters through Cheju Strait.

  • This paper describes results of an experimental study to examine the effect of a submerged horizontal breakwater to sea water exchange. Flow measurements were taken by using a PIV(Particie Image Velocimetry) system, and mean currents and wave ellipses extracted through the harmonic analysis are presented. As results, the rates of circulating flow were closely connected with the volume flux of incident waves and the counter-rotating vortex pair was observed at the onshore side of a plate. The dye study showed that incoming sea water and polluted water body mixed up significantly due to turbulent motions induced by a jet-like flow.

  • A novel bacterium, designated strain RR4-38 (= KCTC 52651 = DSM 108068), belonging to the family Flavobacteriaceae was isolated from a biofilter in the seawater recirculating aquaculture system in South Korea. A single complete genome contig which is 3,182,272 bp with 41.9% G+C content was generated using PacBio RS II platform. The genome includes 2,829 protein-coding genes, 6 rRNA genes, 38 tRNA genes, 4 non-coding RNA genes, and 9 pseudogenes. The results will provide insights for understanding microbial activity in the seawater recirculating aquaculture system.

  • Because there are no isolation valves in condensate system of nuclear power plants, circulating water pump was shutdown for the condenser repair. When circulating water pump was shutdown, power plant output decreased about 45%. These output decreasing can minimize by establishing isolation valves. In this paper, evaluated effect to flow conditions change of condensate system, structural integrity of system, condenser pressure of in case of establish isolation valves to condensate system. Results of the evaluation, the flow rate due to the installation of the isolation valve decreased 0.3% when the valve was fully opened and 4.5% when fully closed. In addition, it was found that the vacuum degree of the condenser decreased with decreasing flow rate, but the integrity of the system was maintained.
