Principal Study of Korean Oak Woods for Utilization with Whisky Aging Barrel (국산 참나무속 수종의 위스키 원액 저장용 목통으로의 활용성 평가)

  • This paper describes experimental results on the utilization of some Korean oak woods for whisky aging barrel. Some anatomical characteristics as vessel diameter, ray spacing, ray height, existence of tyloses, water absorption and color change of alcohol during immersing of wood samples were examined. The oak woods used in this study were ring-porous. The type of ray was a compound ray consisted of uniseriate ray and broad ray. The ray parenchyma cells were almost procumbent, tyloses were presented in white oak(Quercus aliena, Quercus variabilis, Quercus dentata, Quercus mongolica), but absented in red oak(Quercus rubura). Density of wood samples decreased during immersing in alcohol. Alcohol color in Quercus dentata and Quercus aliena presented more darker than other samples. Water absorption of sapwoods was higher than that of heartwoods. Especially, red oak showed more higher water absorption than white oak. Consequently, Korean white oak woods can be used as the whisky aging barrel.

  • With the recent progress of microsurgical techniques, radial forearm free flap has an established place in oral reconstruction. Providing thin, soft and pliable skin with a large and constant vascular pedicle, this flap is optimal for intraoral reconstruction. One of the disadvantages of the flap is donor site morbidity, therefore various methods can be used to reduce it. A male complained of palatal and retromolar area mass with ulceration, which was diagnosed as squamous cell carcinoma. He also complained of discomfort and mouth opening limitation, attributed to the location and characteristics of the mass. Because of mouth opening limitation, mandibular swing approach was performed to allow for the surgical approach to the mass. After the surgical excison of the lesion, the intraoral defect was successfully reconstructed with radial forearm free flap.

  • Realistic facial animation research field which communicates with human and computer using face has increased recently. The human face is the part of the body we use to recognize individuals and the important communication channel that understand the inner states like emotion. To provide the intelligent interface. computer facial animation looks like human in talking and expressing himself. Facial modeling and animation research is focused on realistic facial animation recently. In this article, we suggest the method of facial modeling and animation for realistic facial synthesis. We can make a 3D facial model for arbitrary face by using generic facial model. For more correct and real face, we make the Korean Generic Facial Model. We can also manipulate facial synthesis based on the physical characteristics of real facial muscle and skin. Many application will be developed such as teleconferencing, education, movies etc.

Palm Area Detection by Maximum Hand Width (손 최장너비 기반 손바닥 영역 검출)

  • In the HCI, hand gesture recognition is attracting attention as a method for interaction and information exchange between users and devices along with the development of IT devices. In hand gesture recognition through image processing, palm region detection is a key process contributing to improvement of processing speed and recognition rate. In this paper, we propose a new method for image segmentation between the hand and wrist for palm area detection. The anatomical characteristics of the hand are used to calculate the distance between the iliac bones of the thumb and little finger, which have the widest width, by the horizontal projection histogram of the hand image, and then the palm area is detected by drawing a circle having the width as the diameter. In order to verify the superiority of this method, multiple stage template matching is used to compare and evaluate recognition performance against the four conventional methods for 10 hand gestures. Note that the literatures to offer palm area detection performance evaluation are few although there are many studies on hand gesture recognition.

  • Articular cartilage is a unique tissue with no vascular, nerve, or lymphatic supply. This uniqueness may be one of the reasons why chondral injuries will hardly heal and may progress to osteoarthritis over time. Currently, there are several surgical options for the treatment of articular cartilage lesions. Although there is some discrepancy as to which procedures work best in certain patients. The spectrum of treatment alternatives for articular cartilage defects can range from simple lavage and debridement, drilling, micro-fracturing, and abrasion to osteochondral grafting and autologous chondrocyte implantation. In 1984, for the first time, results of autologous chondrocyte implantation in a rabbit model were presented, showing hyaline cartilage repair. Clinical study using autologous cultured chondrocyte implantation in chondral defects of the human knee has been reported in 23 patients in 1994. In 14 out of 16 patients treated for chondral injuries on the femoral condyles, the results were good to excellent. It is important for the surgeon to understand the autologous chondrocyte implantation technique and to be aware on the postoperative management. Attention to surgical technique and selection of appropriate patient for the autologous chondrocyte implantation will provide with the best results.

Refractive Error Shift in Nuclear, Cortical, and Subcapsular Cataract (핵, 피질 그리고 낭 백내장의 굴절이상 전환)

  • The researchers have studied on the effect of three main morphological types(nuclear, cortical, and subcapsular cataract) of age related cataract on refractive error. We also identified that spherical and cylinderical shift in each type of morphological cataract accoding to their locations and effect of intraocular pressure before and after cataract surgery. Nuclear cataract showed myopic shift while cortical cataract showed hyperopic shift, and subcapsular cataract showed not significant changes on both direction. Age related cataract subjects(120 eyes) only were recruited from sun-cheon area. We use optic section of slit lamp biomicroscope to identify the anatomical location of cataract, and optimal refractive correction determined by objective(retinoscope) and subjective refraction then spherical changes were calculated from the spherical eqivalent value. Intra-ocular pressure were measured by auto-tonometer before and 7 days after cataract has been replaced by IOL. The change in cylindrical power, usually A-P diameter decreased according to increases of age, A-P diameter increased because intra-ocular pressure rises by progression of cataract and this convertion with the rule astigmatism to against the rule astigmatism and this increases more by intra-ocular pressure.

  • Medical image is analyzed to get an anatomical information for diagnostics. Segmentation must be preceded to recognize and determine the lesion more accurately. In this paper, we propose automatic segmentation algorithm for MR brain images using T1-weighted, T2-weighted and PD images complementarily. The proposed segmentation algorithm is first, extracts cerebrum images from 3 input images using cerebrum mask which is made from PD image. And next, find 3D clusters corresponded to cerebrum tissues using scale filtering and 3D clustering in 3D space which is consisted of T1, T2, and PD axis. Cerebrum images are segmented using FCM algorithm with its initial centroid as the 3D cluster's centroid. The proposed algorithm improved segmentation results using accurate cluster centroid as initial value of FCM algorithm and also can get better segmentation results using multi spectral analysis than single spectral analysis.

Investigation of Carbonization Mechanism of Wood (II) (목재의 탄화기구 해석(II))

  • The anatomical characteristics of Quercus variabilis woods carbonized at 310 to $350^{\circ}C$ were examined with an optical and scanning electron microscopy, and an X-ray diffraction analysis. Dimensional change and weight loss were also investigated. Volume of wood samples decreased with increasing the carbonization temperature, and checks were developed along with radial direction. Vessel diameter in tangential direction showed higher shrinkage than that in radial direction. Weight loss of samples increased with increasing carbonization temperature. Especially, the weight loss rapidly increased at the temperature ranging from 330 to $340^{\circ}C$. SEM study presented that the cell walls of samples carbonized at below $320^{\circ}C$ showed the layering structure. However, it was revealed that the layering structure was disappeared at $330^{\circ}C$ and over and showed an amorphous-like structure without cell wall layering. Interestingly, the existence of cellulose crystalline substance at $340^{\circ}C$ was confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis and it was not detected at $350^{\circ}C$. Consequently, it is considered that the critical temperature for carbonization of wood was around $350^{\circ}C$.

급성 후두기관손상 환자의 수술적 치료

  • 후두기관외상은 두경부 부위의 다른 외상에 비해 흔하지 않은데, 이는 연골의 유연성과 후두의 가동성, 후두가 하악과 흉골사이에 위치하여 외상시 보호 받게 되는 해부학적 특성에 기인한다. 그러나, 후두는 호흡과 발성에 중요한 기관으로 조기 진단과 정확한 평가, 적절한 치료를 못할 경우 생명을 위협 할 수 있고 삶의 질에 지대한 영향을 줄 수 있다. 이에 저자들은 급성 후두기관손상으로 수술적 치료를 받은 환자를 대상으로 손상 기전 및 임상 양상, 손상부위, 손상 정도 치료 등을 알아보고 향후 치료에 도움을 얻고자 하였다. 1996년부터 2003년까지 급성 후두기관 손상으로 수술적 치료를 받은 10명을 대상으로 후향적으로 조사를 하였다. 손상정도는 Schaefer의 분류를 따랐으며 술후 결과는 발성과 기도유지로 평가하였다. 발성의 경우 수상전과 동일하거나 유사할 경우 성공(good)으로, 수상전과는 다르지만 기능을 하는 경우는 양호(fair)로, 거의 음성이 나지 않거나 알아들을 수 없는 경우 불량(poor)로 분류하였고, 기도유지는 수상전과 동일하거나 유사할 경우 성공(good)으로, 경한 흡인이나 운동 유발성 호흡곤란이 있는 경우(fair)로 발관이 되지 않는 경우를 불량(poor)으로 분류하였다. 남녀 성비는 8대 2였고 30~40대가 4명으로 가장 많았다. 손상의 원인은 둔상인 경우(4예) 교통사고가 2례, cloth line 손상 2례, 관통상(6례)는 모두 칼에 의한 좌상이었다 증상은 피하기종이 9례, 애성이 7례, 호흡 곤란이 6례로 많았으며 손상부위는 갑상연골 골절이 5례(50%), 기도손상과 갑상선 손상이 각각 4례에서 관찰되었다. 그 외에도 윤상 연골 골절과 윤상갑상막 손상 등이 관찰되었다. 또한 점막 손상이 7례에서 관찰되었다. 성대마비는 내원시 4례에서 관찰되었다 치료는 수상 후 조기수술을 시행하였고 수상 부위를 개방하여 손상된 연조직을 일차 봉합하거나, 골절을 정복 고정하였고 3례에서 스텐트를 삽입하였다. 술후 기도유지는 모두 성공적이었고 발성기능은 6례에서 성공(good)적이었고 4례에서 양호(fair)의 결과를 보였다. 양호의 결과를 보인 모든 예가 내원시 성대 움직임의 마비나 저하를 보인 예였다. 급성 후두기관손상환자에서 조기 진단과 적절한 수술적 치료는 환자의 생명을 유지시키고 술후 발성 지능의 보존에 양호한 결과를 보였다.

Differentiation of Reaction Tissues in the First Internode of Acer saccharinum L. Seedling Positioned Horizontally (수평으로 위치한 은단풍(Acer saccharinum L.) 유식물의 제1절간에 있어서 반응조직의 분화)

  • In order to elucidate the formation of reaction tissues during the transition from primary to secondary growth, the developmental anatomy was conducted in the first internode of Acer sacchan'num seedling in horizontal position. During the transition from primary to secondary growth, tension wood(gelatinous fiber) was gradually developed on the upper side only, And the tension wood formation in the upper side of the horizontal first internode proceeds acropetally from base to apical portion. Some of the anatomical features of tension wood start to be in the primary vascular tissue and a typical tension wood show during the secondary growth, Therefore, the procambium seems to respond to the gravity as well as vascular cambium. For this reason, both procambium and vascular cambium has to regard as the same meristem, On the other hand, the upper side vessels were longer than those of the lower side in the horizontal first internode. The lateral-wall pitting of vessel elements, however, showed no differences between upper and lower sides which have alternate type. The width and height of rayon the upper side of horizontal first internode was larger as compared with the lower side.r side.
