  • In this paper, I raise objections to Sungsu Kim's argument that Sartorio's hard-line reply to the manipulation argument fails. In attacking Sartorio's argument, Sungsu Kim claims that there are two problems with Sartorio's. I argue that Sungsu Kim's argument fails by responding to these two problems. With respect to the first problem, I provide a new example of dilution of responsibility. With respect to the second problem, I argue that, contrary to what Sungsu Kim assumes, for Sartorio's argument to succeed, our intuition that Ernie is responsible in the Lightning Strike Scenario does not have to be as strong as our intuition that Ernie is not responsible in the Diana scenario.

  • Indoor air quality underground facilities are not equipped for the removal of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and they are usually treated by diffusion methods such as ventilation. In this study, an adsorption filter was prepared using various coating methods such as carbon nano fiber (CNF) and dip coating. As a result, the adsorption performance was improved by 2 to 20 times or more compared to that of using the metal foam support. This is maybe due to the enhancement of pore distribution which was confirmed by SEM. In addition, the adsorption performance was 13.95 mg/g by adding lignin, and also an average adsorption performance of 13.25 mg/g was maintained after washing indicating that a highly durable adsorption filter material was prepared. It can be suggested that the developed adsorption filter material can be a potential solution that can fundamentally control VOCs, not via the concentration reduction of mechanical ventilation in underground facilities.

  • Complicated political situation still plagues charter schools despite their innovative education. Nevertheless, they experienced growth around 2011, yet only a few studies have explored why they had expanded from the political viewpoints. Therefore, using political institutions and political market framework, this study investigated the relationship between political institutions and charter school growth in the US(United States). To do so, this study conducted multiple regression analyses of school growth measured by the number of schools allowed, implementation points, and guaranteed funding. The findings revealed that only governors' partisanship has a significant influence on the number of schools. Moreover, supportive privatization organizations, governors' partisanship, and per capita income affects implementation points. Meanwhile, regarding guaranteed fiscal funding for the charter schools, the teachers' union enrollment rate, governors' partisanship, and per capita income are crucially influential. Finally, the results confirmed that political institutions are also important for education.

  • In this study, we perform a 3D CFD conjugate analysis according to the shape of the foil ramp of the air foil thrust bearing, analyze the flow characteristics inside the bearing, and compare the results corresponding to the two shapes. Air has a lower viscosity than lubricating oil. Therefore, the thrust runner of the bearing must rotate at high speed to support the load. The gap between thrust runner and foil is significantly smaller than that of the oil bearing. Hence, it is crucial to analyze the complex flow characteristics inside the bearing to predict the complex flow inside the bearing and performance of the bearing. In addition, flow characteristics may appear differently depending on the ramp shape of the bearing foil, which may affect bearing performance. In this study, we numerically analyze the main flow path of air flowing into the bearing and the secondary flow path used for cooling the bearing using the commercial CFD software ANSYS CFX and compare the flow characteristics for straight and curved foil ramp shapes. Notably, there is a difference in the speed of the flowing air according to the shape of the ramp, which affects the bearing performance.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of family-friendly policies on married female managers' desire for an additional child and the mediating effects of family-friendly supervisor support and work-family conflict. The analysis included 480 married female managers from the 7th survey of the 2018 Korean Women Manager Panel. Family-friendly policies were found to have an indirect effect on the desire for an additional child via family-friendly supervisor support and work-family conflict. These findings emphasize the importance of not only implementing family-friendly policies, but also creating a culture that supports them. Based on the results, approaches to interventions in the workplace to reverse the current trend of low fertility are discussed.

  • In a hypersonic vehicle to solve the heat problem generated during flight, a cooling technology is being developed which uses the endothermic effect that appears during the decomposition reaction of the mounted fuel. In this study, the decomposition reaction of n-dodecane fuel was performed using HZSM-5 as a catalyst, and the catalyst was coated on metal foam to maximize the endothermic effect of the catalytic decomposition reaction and suppress coke formation. The reactor was a stainless steel flow reactor with a outer diameter of 1.27 cm, and the reaction temperature was 550 ℃, the reaction pressure was 4 MPa, and the flow rate was 12 ml per minute. As a result of the catalytic decomposition reaction using a catalyst coated with HZSM-5 on the metal foam, the heat sink was 2887 kJ/kg as a maximum, the gas phase conversion rate was 34%, and the amount of coke produced on the metal foam decreased by about 56% as the catalyst was coated compared to the uncoated catalyst.

  • Prior research on the relationship between output volatility and growth has produced mixed results, failing to provide clear empirical evidence on the sign of the relationship. In this paper, we raise the possibility that such failure is due to misspecification in empirical models previously used, i.e., not taking into account the business cycle dependence of the volatility-growth relation. We set off with the conjecture that higher volatility exerts qualitatively different effect on growth depending on whether the economy is in expansion or contraction. We estimate a series of ARCH-type models with the monthly industrial production data of the U.K., and find strong evidence suggesting that the volatility-growth relation is positive when the economy is in expansion, while higher volatility lowers growth rate in the contraction phase. We also find evidence supporting that the volatility-growth relation estimated in the paper captures a a causal relation, not a bidirectional correlation.
